“Ignore the ignorant review, this is the best!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2010

For someone to complain that kids were casing chickens around this place, tells you they should have stayed at home. Bastimentos is undoubtedly the best place to stay in Bocas, relaxed, totally Creole and still a 'genuine' place away from the surfers and kids, and Beverly's Hill (despite the rather awful name) is the best place to stay. The rooms on stilts are charming and if you stay in the one at the back up the hill as we did you get an unforgettable view over the bay. Ok quite basic, but so full of character. The gardens are superb and full of red frogs everywhere (the only place we ever saw them). Go to Bastimentos rather than Bocas town and stay here!

We arrived in the morning and there were beer cans littered all over the common area (not appealing since we chose to stay here based on our guide book's indication that it was a "green" option). While my husband went to find someone (the owners were still sleeping) the dog came over and got blood on my pants. Then we got to our room and I couldn't figure out what the bad smell was -- looked behind the cabin and there was the burn pile right there. Soon the neighbors were burning their trash on both sides as well. If you have asthma definitely DON'T stay here. While we sat on the deck trying to read, there were roosters in the yard, kids chasing them, and one of the many cats caught a lizard and ate it a few feet in front of us. The garden setting is beautiful, and we saw some of the red frogs here. The owners -- not the ones listed in the lonely planet -- seemed nice enough, perhaps just a bit disorganized...It is located in the "old town" which doesn't really have much to it. There is a trail to the beaches, but they are very muddy and a bit confusing. If you want easy access to the other islands, I recommend staying somewhere else...Overall not a lot of appeal...

This place is the place to stay on Bastimentos. Great rooms, fair prices, beautiful views and awesome service from the owners. If you don't stay here, you are missing out. Low key luxury at it's finest!

This is a great place to stay if you are looking for budget accommodation amongst friendly locals. Bastimentos island in the Bocas del Toro had a real Caribbean feel to it. Very different from Isla Colon, which is overrun by travellers and expats. The owners referred to in the 2007 Panama Lonely Planet left three years ago. Beverly’s Hill current owners Simon, Sandra and their young daughter Naomi were incredibly welcoming. They were also happy to help us organise a snorkel and dolphin watching trip. The wooden cabins are well maintained; some with bathroom and some without. Ours was the best: the upper level of two ensuite cabins, the highest on the small hill, with wonderful views from the balcony over the trees below (wide variety of birdlife everywhere in their garden) and the sea and islands beyond. Surprisingly, the bugs are minimal. You can however hear every sound and feel every movement of your neighbours in the cabin below.

The nearest beach is ½ hour’s walk away. A few supermarkets and restaurants are within a very short distance and the locals spend much of the day and evening on the only “road” (concrete path) on the island. Children play monopoly, adults talk and play music (loud most of time). Despite being disturbed some nights by the music, we found it a very relaxing place and a perfect end to our Panamanian trip.

  • Liked — lush green and seaside setting
  • Disliked — lack of soundproofing
