“Absolutely Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

Before traveling to Panama, I read review after review of places to stay.

I was traveling with my boyfriend over the holidays and I wanted a plaec to stay that was relaxing, luxurious, but not too expensive.

Eclypse De Mar was the perfect (and I mean perfect place)!

Malena, the owner was the most customer-friendly owner I've ever met. It is a family-run business, and they have customer service down pact.

As far as the bungalows, they were the coolest alternative to staying in a hotel that I've ever done. Every morning, breakfast was delivered to the bungalow at whatever time you specified the night before. This allowed us to wake up when we wanted, eat our breakfast and have our coffee on the deck of our bungalow while we took breaks to jump in the ocean to have a refreshing wake-up moment.

There is wifi in the main area/communal area of the hotel.

While we stayed at Eclypse de Mar, we were surrounded by other young couples and young singles that we would hook up with to go do day trips to different beaches, go snorkeling, and/or go out on the town on the main island of Bocas town.

Cons: The only con we experienced was the loud music. There is a bar accross the water that plays its music extremely loud until all hours of the night. To be fair, it was Christmas time, so I heard that the loud music was a result of this.

If we were to go back to Bocas de Toro, I would without a doubt stay at Eclypse de Mar. It was awesome!

Room Tip: Bungalows are so much cooler than the rooms. Rooms 4 and 5 get the most privacy.

I recommended Eclypse de Mar to all my friends and colleagues after returning from our trip there. The overwater bungalows are elegantly constructed over perfect aquamarine waters. Each bungalow has a private deck with a gorgeous view of the water and sailboats. We spent a lot of time just laying out in the sun and jumping off our private dock into the water for swimming sessions. The owners of the hotel serve to enhance the experience. They are kind and personable and make staying with them a true pleasure. We also took some day trips to nearby islands and to snorkel. These were only about $20 a person per day. I would recommend staying at Eclypse on Bastimentos, as opposed to the main island, as it's a lot more tranquil and private. When you want to visit the big restaurants and bars, the main island is only a 10 min water taxi ride away.

We had the best time at Eclypse de Mar. Staying in the honeymoon bungalow was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Panama. The bungalow is beautiful and luxurious, and we loved swimming right off our deck, and having the outdoor shower to rinse the salt-water off afterward. We loved lounging in the sun chairs and the hammock, honestly we would have been content just hanging out and swimming all day at our bungalow. But there is so much to do and to see in Bocas!

I can't say enough amazing things about Malena and the staff at Eclypse de Mar. Everyone was so great, and took great care of us, especially when it came to food! I cannot eat gluten, but didn't tell Malena in advance (I didn't want to be a bother), and on day 1, she went out of her way to find me gluten free sweet bread for the morning breakfast, and gluten free pasta for dinner. It was so thoughtful and made me feel very cared for! We ate breakfast every morning in the restaurant, and had amazing tropical fruit salad each day. Scrambled eggs, toast for my husband, and great coffee, and and amazing view, it was heaven. We couldn't get enough of the fruit, and ordered fruit smoothies every afternoon as well.

The staff also had all sorts of recommendations for us each day on different activities and beaches we could visit. They took care of calling their connections and arranging island tours for us, so we didn't have to worry about how to get places or who was the best person for a tour or surf lesson, etc. It was very reassuring, and made it very easier for travelers like us--who were on the "no plan plan" and had figured out nothing in advance!

The staff was so accommodating to us. I also can't disagree more with any negative comments by others, we had a fabulous experience, and felt so sad to leave! We truly hope to be able to return one day soon!

The people at the hotel are extremely friendly, it helps that the owners are often around and are always trying to make the best of your stay. We were at a standard room for one night, then moved to the honeymoon bungalow. The bungalows are designed so as to give you complete privacy, great views of the sunset, the possibility to go for a swim right from your balcony, and comfortable and pleasant interior. That, combined with their restaurant and the relaxing setting of the place makes you want to stay the whole time at the hotel, without going to Bocas del Toro or Bastimentos, only leaving the hotel for a hike on the hotel's reserve trail or for one the nature day trips the hotel will suggest for you. We spent new years at the hotel and they had a very nice toast in the late afternoon, courtesy of the hotel, and even gave us a nice souvenir, all the little things combined definitively make a big difference. I would't go anywhere else in Bocas del Toro.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are right next to the restaurant, and you can meet travelers from all over if you wan...

our stay at eclypse de mar was in february 2011, but after reading some of the negative reviews i felt compelled to write. i couldn't disagree more with the negative comments. my boyfriend and i had an idyllic stay at eclypse de mar and dream of going back sometime soon.

one of the aspects i appreciated most was that the accommodations were so well equipped for guests. it seemed like the owners and staff thought of every last detail. everything from the welcome drink, to the lights on the bungalow floor you could use to attract fish in the evenings, to the ceiling fan right over the bed with a mosquito net to keep any bugs away, to the fact that you can't see other guests from your bungalow's dock. there was careful planning put into the design of the bungalows, and you really feel it while you're staying there.

i am not a nature lover or very outdoorsy and the balance of eco friendly and luxury was perfect for us. i've always wanted to stay in an over the water hut, and eclypse del mar offered that at a (extremely!) reasonable price. the quality of service and comfort we had during our stay far exceeded our expectations for the price, and for being in such a remote location.

the food at their restaurant was also very delicious. we took water taxis to eat at other restaurant, and while they were reasonably good (especially roots in bastimentos -- great location and food), the chef at eclypse del mar made us our favorite meals.

we also spent a few nights in bocas town but nothing compared to staying at eclypse. the day we spent swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding from our private deck was perfect and like a fantasy. (eclypse de mar has a kayak and paddle board that guests can use at no charge).

we also loved the aspect of flagging down water taxis -- it made it feel like you were in your own paradise.

and finally, the staff was so generous, warm and hospitable. we felt like they were there whenever we needed them, but appreciated that they were not overbearing- they gave us the perfect amount of privacy.

no complaints, and can't wait to visit again!

Having recently stayed at Eclypse De Mar, I just wanted to share a few things with those of you who are trying to get the best bang for your buck while traveling here.

While the cabins are simply gorgeous, the service was below average. If you are looking for someone to hand you your key and say "have a nice week" then this is the place for you. The option of having your breakfast brought to your cabin was really nice - although for $160 dollars a night you would think they could include more than just toast and coffee. While they make it sound very exotic by telling you that toasted coconut bread and fresh jam will be delivered to your cabin, it is indeed no more than the local bread that they sell in all of the grocery stores on the island toasted along with small packets of Smucker's jelly packets. When the breakfast was delivered, the simple smell of it brought a family of geckos that didn't want to leave, and licked up every last bit of fruit juice and jam that was left on the plate. Perhaps this is why there is not more than coffee and toast. (?)

No one on the staff was ever rude or inconsiderate, but they just never went out of their way to offer any special service. It was always a matter of hunting them down if you wanted anything. For example: While having lunch in the restaurant one day, once the lunch was set on the table, that was the end of the service. I had to go to the kitchen to ask for another drink. As the weather was not great on this particular day, we decided to stay in the restaurant area and play some of the table games that they provide near the front desk. While four of us sat there for several hours, never once were we asked by any of the kitchen staff if we wanted anything to eat or drink. Not that any of us were above going to the kitchen and asking for something, but again, I just think for the price that you are paying, the service should be better.

Transportation to the main Island (or even to other parts of the same island) is all done by water taxi. If you are not planning on eating your meals in the restaurant at Eclypse de Mar, it will cost you an extra $3 - $5 per person to get to the main island in each direction, depending on the time of day. So if you you are a group of 4, it could cost you up to $40 per evening just to go into town to look for a different restaurant. If you like to explore restaurant options when you are traveling, just know that it will cost you to get back and forth. The water taxi across the bay (still on the Isle of Bastimentos) is cheaper - there just aren't as many food options there. We did have dinner at a local restaurant called "Roots" on Bastimentos that had great prices and great local food!

I live in New York City and am used to taking a taxi - but I spent more money on water taxi's in Panama than I ever do in NYC. Perhaps Eclypse de Mar should think about offering a complimentary shuttle once or twice during your stay for the price that they are charging. Even something as simple as that would have made the service seem better.

The best service we had from Eclypse De Mar was on the day that we decided to hire a boat for the day to show us around the Islands, take us snorkeling, have lunch and enjoy the beaches. Our guide provided by EDM (Hernan) was great. He was very friendly, provided much information about the islands, hung out with us when appropriate, but also stayed out of our way to let us explore beaches, snorkel, etc. as much as we wanted. The Hotel provided some fresh pineapple and water in the boat for our day trip... however, upon receiving our final bill at checkout time, we noticed we were charged for the 4 bottles of water. Again, throwing a few bottles of water in our boat and not charging for them would have gone a long way in the service department.

If you want to get away and not be bothered by anyone and don't mind paying these prices for a getaway with no service and no extra amenities, then this is for you.

I guess we were a little spoiled by the fact that we stayed at Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica for a few nights before going down to Panama. They offered relaxing beautiful accommodations "away from it all," while still going the extra mile to make sure you were taken care of... at half the cost.

It is very important for us to give the correct information about our Lodge and about the service in our Hotel.
As being a very small lodge, we are very used to interact with our guests during their stay.
Much of our time includes talking and sharing our experiences with our guests, what we enjoy very much. Among the daily effort that means keeping everything organised, cleanliness, quality and service.
As you already know our hotel is gay friendly and we were very happy to have you as guests.

On the other side, we remember you all (2 couples in two separated Bungalows), and as you have mentioned in your review, we (my husband and me) have 2 small sons and during that week one of them (our 1 year old baby) had flu and fever, so maybe we had a difficult time and was really hard for us to find extra time to share with you, as we are used to.
Let us share with you that we consider that people who choose Eclypse de Mar as a destination for relax during their vacations can feel uncomfortable by noise of small children. Maybe that is why we haven’t been so much time in the Restaurant and Reception area during those days. We would have also loved to share more time with you as with the other guests during those dates but we couldn't.

It is very important for us to leave clear that we have detailed you in advance the whole information about our location, costs of the water taxis (during day and night), costs of different Tours, activities around the Lodge and detailed information about our services at the moment that you contacted us through e-mail requesting for a reservation. So we feel really surprised about your review, because we understand that you have read our e-mail before confirming your reservation.

About the Continental Breakfast (which is included) please notice that it was also detailed in the first reservation e-mail, offering what you were going to have, including our “original” coconut bread, which we serve every morning in our breakfasts, hand- made by an old woman in the village of “Old Bank” in Bastimentos and to whom we buy it from since more than 4 years (and let us tell you that the one that you could find in Bocas town will probably taste totally different as it is made with a chinese different recipe and not by local people. It is is very important to clarify this point due to contribute with the sustainable activities of the local community)

We also notify our guests that we offer filtered water (not extra charge). But if someone order beer, juices or bottle of water during the stay at the Lodge, it will appear in the bill at the end of their stay and we assume from the beginning that the guests will agree to pay for it (unless we offer it as courtesy).

About your check out request, when the flight leaves early in the morning, we use to make the bill the night before. Usually if our guests decide to go out for dinner we give them the option to proceed with the payment the evening
before their departure date (guests and us agree that it makes it easier for both parts instead of leaving the payment for the next morning, as the Captain usually arrives very early on time to transport our guests to Colon island where the Airport is located).
We feel very proud about our staff and we trust them very much, so sometimes Karen proceed with the bill payment, as she did this time.

Finally we feel very happy that you have enjoyed your stay in the Bungalows (which you agreed they where very clean, pretty and large), also the activities that we have suggested you around the archipelago and the Lodge (hiking through the Nature Reserve area, snorkeling around the Bungalows and around the coral reef located a few meters from your Bungalows, kayaking, and swimming until sunset time from your private deck–terrace, enjoyed the day tour with our very kind Captain “Hernan”, having a nice “home made” dinner in our Restaurant over the sea, smiling and local staff, and complete information about the area to allow our guests to enjoy as much as possible the different activities during their stay…. These are the things that we can guarantee to our guests from the moment that they will arrive at our Lodge.

These are the things that we love to manage every day to guarantee to our guests a unique and unforgettable experience from the moment that they will arrive at our dock. We hope that our future guests will concern about our interest and commitment on making their stay at Eclypse de Mar Acqua Lodge memorable and beautiful, even if we (owners) cannot be with them their entire stay.

Just got back from a three night stay at this hotel. We were a group of 2 gay couples with two bungalows. After reading all the reviews on this hotel we have to disagree with many of them. I know that many have given it good ratings but this just wasnt our experience. I will try and go over each topic and explain in detail so that one can make their own decision whether or not to book this hotel. The bungalows are very pretty. They are large with a bedroom and a living room and large deck over the water. What lacked at this hotel, especially for the price, as it is way over priced for the area was the service and value for your money. We arrived and were greeted by Karen who was very nice and showed us to our bungalows. The owners, who from other reviewers seemed to play a big part in their stay just seemed to be living there and not part of the guest experience or possibly just ours?? Malena introduced herself but the other owner who I believe was Leonardo, her husband never really interacted or introduced himself to us or to our fellow travelers and basically almost ignored us while there. We almost felt uncomfortable and in the way when near the main house. They are raising their family with two children on property which seemed to take up most of their energy as well as many of the staff's attention. You were never sure which part of the house you were allowed in and not until the last night when were paying did we even realize their was a front desk area. We felt like we would be intruding into their house if you left the restaurant area. Malena the second day did come out and tell us about a tour they would offer that day for 30 dollars each. We decided to go on it with their Captain Hernan. It was very nice and Hernan did a good job. I found it amusing that Malena kept reiterating that she had included some pineapple slices in the cooler for us complimentary over and over again. Ok ok, we get it, you gave us free pineapple :) The last night after very little interaction with the owners during the stay, as we came back from dinner off of a boat we were chased down on the dock by Karen who said Malena would like us to take care of the bill, which we did as she called up to Malena in her home to figure out the bill and telephone the total down to Karen. When paying I asked, wont Malena be coming down and saying goodbye purposely to Karen as I felt we were never welcomed in the first place by the owners and sent off without even a goodbye, thanks for staying, have a safe trip, nothing. Karen answered, no, she is upstairs with the children. Karen asked if we would like coffee as we were leaving early at 7:20 the next morning. We said yes. When we got up I was walking over to the house and spotted the husband who was putting out our breakfast and coffee. I thought surely he is going to at least poke his head out and say something, nothing was said and he went back upstairs without saying anything and closed the doors to the main house. We were left cold coffee obviously made the night before and this is exactly what I said to my travel mates the night before that what Karen meant was she was going to make it that night and leave it. The coffee in the other mornings was pipeing hot, the last morning cold. We were left 8 packages of saltine crackers and butter and jelly packets by Smuckers. Now I know 160 per night is not the Ritz but in this area 160 is A LOT of money for saltines. For this price, even though the website says what you get for breakfast they should serve a breakfast to you, not just coconut toast. Please dont think this is some delicious coconut bread baked on premises that is like banana bread. It is toast, like a Pita bread and found in every grocery store for pennies in town. Smuckers jelly packets and butter were served with it with 2 fruit skewers with a grape, a piece of pineapple and a piece of other fruit on each. Skewer meaning a plastic cocktail sword. Insulting at best for the price, no value for your money at all. The coffee was hot and delicious the first two mornings except the last morning, cold, yuk! It also would have been nice to be able to have coffee before 8 am which was the earliest you could get it.
Location....if you are there to just stay in your bungalow it might be nice. If you are looking to go elsewhere it is inconvenient to take a boat and expensive. You are kind of stuck on this dock unless you get a boat. You just cant go for a walk anywhere except the reserve, you feel stuck there. It is 3 dollars each to Bocas and 5 at night. Each night we paid 20 dollars each way to go to dinner for the 4 of us, adding 40 dollars to our dinner. Going over to Bastimentos, the local area was cheaper at 1 dollar in the day and 2 at night. As a service they might offer a boat ride over to the mainland once or twice a day at a set time on one of their two boats for guests as a courtesy, or offer pickup when coming over from the mainland when you first arrive. Roots was a good restaurant in bastimentos serving local caribbean food. It was funny that talking with the locals they all seemed to dislike the owners of Eclipse De Mar. It seems it is owned by a group of business people. Not sure if it is true but these are the stories we heard from several people locally. We enjoyed Barracuda on the main island of Bocas for a great italian meal. We decided to not eat at the hotel because we did not want to give them any more of our money. Our friends did eat lunch there one day and said it was ok. We sat and played dominoes with them in the dining area and while there for several hours were not even asked if we wanted a drink from the bar, nothing, the two staff members just sat at the kitchen window and never came over or said a word. I guess we were supposed to ask them, again the no service isssue. The music from Bastimentos was not an issue. In the evening there was drumming and it added to the place actually. I find it funny that that is what everyone compains about on here and not the service. Maybe we were treated differently, it seems so odd and we are not hard to please. The reserve area behind the hotel is very pretty to walk around in, and we saw lots of pretty plants and birds and caymens and the ducks were precious with their young. The gardener staff members only said hello when we did first. The no electric in the day did not bother us, neither did placing toilet paper in the can or the timed water spouts like you would find at a public bathroom that go off automatically. We had hot water and the cabin was very nice with a hammock and we saw alot of fish underneath and starfish. Careful of the dock in the rain as two of the four of us slipped and fell on the dock as it is very slippery and we are active men in great shape, not a complaint just a helpful hint for those who may stay there, not really their fault at all whatsoever. All in all I would skip this place, probably stay on the main island and then use boats to go to the outer islands occasionally when you wanted to. The town is nice, it was quiet season, hence the 160 rate so you will pay even more in season which would make it even less of a value. The best thing I can say about the place was the bungalows were beautiful, but everything else was sub par.
