“They had thought of everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Our bungalow was amazing.

Waking up with the doors open, looking over the water to the forest, quite possibly one of nicest ways you can wake up. Sitting on our deck watching the sunset with a mojito even better. Being able to snorkel straight from our deck- great.

Loved this place, is a little pricey but well worth the money. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay perfect.

This was a fantastic place to get away from it all and yet only a 10 minute, and very cheap, water taxi ride away from Bocos, beaches, restaurants and bars. We stayed in the honeymoon bungalow and could not have asked for a more beautiful place. The nature reserve behind the bungalows is good for the keen eyed naturalist. The only problem is that during the day there is little to do on location so you will need to get water taxis elsewhere for beaches etc. The hosts will give good advice and taxis are cheap. For us, we enjoyed the chance to explore.

a truly exceptional place!
from the view out of bed through the opening double doors over the deck into the blue sky and the water, unforgettable!, to the delicious lobster dinner we had, the friendly service etc etc it was a highlight in an already great holiday.

Room Tip: with 2 big sons we could comfortably stay in the standard bungalow

This place was fantastic. The nature reserve was an interesting, easy trek thru the jungle. We saw red frogs, scary spiders, and beautiful flowers. They offer free use of their kayaks as well as snorkling gear! They have a hammock to use in the bungalow, both outside or inside. Being able to swim and snorkle off your private deck was fantastic. The water was mostly clear and we were able to see all kinds of fish, starfish, and coral reefs. The food was tasty (although not many choices) but the alcoholic beverages were expensive for Panama. Bocas is extremely dirty but around Eclypse de Mar, they keep the grounds incredibly clean. The owners were hospitable and the staff friendly. BUT, and it is a huge but when you are looking for a quiet getaway with your spouse, there is loud music coming from Bastimentos proper that continues until about 2am.

This was our favorite place we stayed while traveling in the bocas area. We ended up extending our stay from a weekend to an entire week. Everything about it was fabulous. The owners and staff are super friendly, it was always very clean and just so relaxing. Our cabina was perfect for our family of four. It would be amazing to be here also without the kids, because it's very romantic. Our kids loved walking into the ocean right from the steps off the deck. They saw lots of fish right there snorkeling and my husband saw a huge manta ray. The kids also loved feeding the fish and watching them all come at once. We went on an excursion to coral key I think it was called and our guide was also so friendly. We saw so many different types of fish, I highly recommend tours through eclypse de mar. The food in the restaurant is delicious. It's very easy to get a boat taxi to bocas, red frogs beach and carenero surf break. This was my husbands highlight of the trip. The surf was fantastic here and just a short boat ride to the break. We especially enjoyed the boat rides at night and we even saw phosphorecents in the waves on our last night. It was really magical. I loved our stay here and would came back in a heartbeat! Awesome!!!

Absolutely love our stay at Eclypse de Mar! The owners are an amazing family and very helpful. The staff is extremely professional and it's a perfect mix of luxury and casual comfort. The bungalows are beautifully built, clean, and very romantic. And breakfast in the bungalow is a nice treat! Loved the snorkeling right off the porch... Tons of fish, coral, and clear water. Red Frog beach is a short water taxi ride away and definitely worth visiting. This was an amazing place to stay and totally recommend for a couples getaway or honeymoon!

The Eclypse de Mar is very different from any other resort or hotel we have stayed at, so it is difficult to compare with other places... The owner and staff were nothing but friendly, helpful, and attentive to our needs. They clearly care about their environment, and backup generator power is only used when absolutely necessary. The views were simply remarkable. We ate at the hotel for our first evening as well as for breakfasts, and in all cases the food was delicious and prices fair. At $15, a bottle of white wine was a lovely compliment to a really well prepared meal. They ask for your selections and time of dining an hour or so before dinner time in order that they can prepare it. Breakfast orders and time are left out the night before, so they are ready for you.

The rooms in the bungalow are open to the roof, but the walls are not - the only room with an actual ceiling is the bathroom and door are louvered, so air flow (and conversations) are not impeded. It is always warm to hot and humid (you are in Panama, after all) and the ceiling (roof fans?) are appreciated. Read other reviews for comments about the nightly pounding of music from the nearby town across the water, unusual handling of toilet tissue, daily power restrictions (and thus dim bathrooms) and push-every-ten-second showers. Just be prepared. Bringing our own towels for the beach was inconvenient, and frankly just moved the "Eco-unfriendliness" of beach towels to our baggage, and washing at home.

Other small complaints - the light in the rooms was a single overhead bulb, making for deep shadows and difficult reading. A few LED lamps on the wall would probably save energy, and be more suited for controlled task lighting. Any time you want to go anywhere at all, it is a water taxi, negotiations on price, more cash. And bring change - no boat owner seems to have change smaller than $5. Hmm.

The idea of seeing the water through the floor is a neat idea - but there really wasn't much to see, and one of the viewing portals was open to the room - so we needed to be very careful not to kick anything on the floor into the water below!

This place is beautiful, remote (except to the nightly music), and very Eco-friendly. If that's your thing, you will love it!
