“excellent choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

Was thrilled with this hotel. Having an american style breakfast served in the restaurant was an added treat. Nice fresh juice. The little Carribean market next door is truly the best place to pick up any food/incidentals, by far. Excellent location overall. Close enough to the main area to be very convenient and far enough away to feel separate from the noise/business. Lovely staff also. Friends stayed at the two other comparable places...tropical suites and playa tortuga....comments were that tropical suites was too close to the main bars, and tortuga was a bit too removed from the main strip.

This hotel was GREAT! It was across the street from the ferry pier. We stayed in a deluxe suite on the 3rd floor. We had a wrap around balcony which was nice. The room had a large fridge, electric stove, plates, utensils, pots/pans, coffee beans, coffee grinder, and coffee machine. Breakfast was included and was delicious.

The lighting could have been a bit brighter in the main living room. Also, the wifi signal was spotty and was in and out. It wasn't too important as we were there to relax and enjoy the beaches.

The hotel has a bar and we would get fresh fruit smoothies--YUM! The front desk was always helpful in arranging taxis and providing advice on what to see. We also had laundry done upon arrival which is $5 per bag.

The hotel was clean and located at the end of the main street in Bocas town. This was rather nice as there are loud bars playing music at all hours of the night but since we were at the end, it was not an issue. From walking around the town, it seems this was (if not one of) the best hotels in the area. There is a grocery store next door (Super Gourmet) which sells the local organic chocolate--delicious. The rooms comes with a binder of things to do and where to go.

Overall, the hotel was great and we would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: We stayed at a Deluxe Suite room on the third floor. It looked out the front of the hotel with a wr...

We stayed her for 4 nights - the first two in the two bedroom penthouse and then moved to a smaller one bedroom suite (we would have loved to stay in the penthouse for the entire trip but it was already booked for half of our dates). Both rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. We loved the location and the little market next door had excellent fare.

Room Tip: Penthouse was fantastic if you are up for a little more expense

Spent three enjoyable nights exploring the islands and loved coming back to this elegant but simple hotel.... nice having a refrigerator, made-to-order breakfast, and a balcony overlooking the water.. and hotel desk staff helped us arrange a bus to Red Frog Beach..

The Palma Royale should be at the top of your list if you are planning to visit Bocas del Toro. While there are many less expensive options available, the value received for the cost is exceptional.

Our room on the third floor was large with a separate bedroom and wraparound balcony overlooking the water. It was very nicely finished and furnished and the a/c worked well. The receptionists spoke pretty good English and the staff was always helpful and courteous. The included hot breakfast was good, although room service is not offered.

One of our favorite little things about the hotel was the bin of Panamanian coffee beans and a coffee grinder in the room. You can drink great coffee to your heart's content. The only criticism is that I wish we had another lamp or two in the main living area at night.

The hotel is an easy walk from the airport but taxis are plentiful. Bocas Town is a little rough-around-the-edges but we never felt unsafe. The funky character of Bocas Town is part of its charm. A great antidote to sterile resorts if that is not your thing. There were enough restaurants to keep us occupied for our three-day stay and we did not have a bad meal anywhere.

While we spent one day exploring the surrounding islands by boat, our favorite activity was renting bikes and pedaling to Bluff Beach. A little less than an hour by bike on a mixture of paved and unpaved roads, but you can also take a taxi. We happened upon the Playa Bluff Beach Restaurant by accident. It is run by a couple of brothers from the Netherlands. Both the food and the atmosphere were excellent. About a half-dozen local and very talented musicians played in various combinations just for fun. It does not get any better than that.

If you want something off the beaten path, Bocas and Palma Royale are a great combination.

Thank you so much for the Spectacular review. We love being referred to as an Oasis.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed the small touch of the grinder with fresh Boquete coffee beans. We will look into some more lighting in the living area and we appreciate your suggestion.
We are glad you enjoyed your adventures in Bocas.

Both rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. We loved the location at the end of the main road in Bocas Town, near everything but a little bit quieter than further up the road. Loved having coffee and breakfast on the patio every morning and half price HH in the afternoon. The staff was really wonderful and helped us arrange a few excursions (including translating when we needed it). I would stay her again in a heart beat and would highly recommend to friends and family - very relaxed and comfortable place to stay at a very good value!

We stayed here for three nights in March 2013 in room 413. We had views of the ferry terminal and the ocean, very nice balcony that wraps around the room. Nice spa-like bathroom with amazing shower, comfortable bed (except it seemed to be covered in plastic). I was sick when we were staying here so spent a lot of time in the room and can definitely say it was very comfortable and quiet. Having a kitchen and full size fridge was great, and the breakfast included was pretty good but got a little old by the third day. The hotel is very clean and nice, there looked to be a lot of crappy hotels in this town so be careful where you book. The Tropical Suites and the Bocas Del Toro Hotel both also looked very nice just from walking by them and were closer to the center of town. The Palma Royale was great for us because we didn't want to be in the loud part of town and wanted a kitchen and balcony. Even though it's not in the center of town or on the water, it's still very very close (5 min walk). The restaurant el ultimo refugio was a 2 minute walk from the hotel and was excellent, highly recommend it. There is also a nice grocery store next door.
The staff was responsive and friendly, I highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in bocas town, although if I had to do it again I would stay only one or two nights in Bocas Town and longer on isla bastimentos or a more remote spot on isla colon or something for the rest of the time. Bocas Town has some good restaurants and fun bars but the beaches and scenery is much nicer in the other areas - in my opinion.
