This has potential to be a nice place as it's on a lovely beach; but is very far out of town, with very limited forms of transport in. The owners might give you a lift when it is convenient for them, but this can be rare. You can rent a bike for a 1 1/2 hr cycle ride each way, but we paid $50 for 4 uses of a bike! Which seemed appallingly overpriced, especially compared to the prices in town. We weren't told the price of the bicycle hire until our final bill arrived. Everything is extremely expensive because there is no other option for you - so what you buy in the hotel - the drinks, food etc, is massively inflated compared to what you would pay closer to town, and you are not given any choice at all in the meals, or what you would like to eat for breakfast, dinner etc; despite paying well over local restaurant prices. There is a nice back garden area to eat meals, but the service can take hours; and mealtimes are served at the owner's convenience, not yours as a guest. Generally one of the biggest problems with this 'hotel' is that it does it does not know the boundaries between being a hotel and family home. As a paying guest, you are not given any choice in anything; you are treated more like a house guest who should fit into the owner's schedule and help make it easy for them; and yet the room rate is extremely expensive for the area, more comparable with staying in a top-class hotel with staff. Once the final bill comes there are a lot of hidden costs which you are not given the chance to dispute. Some of the prices were the same as in top hotels of London or New York, not on a small island in Panama!! It is shocking to think the owners do not understand how overpriced their services are; and it can only be greed that leads them to charge the obscene amounts, taking advantage of the guest being stranded there and having no other option!
Added to this, you have to pay for full duration of stay up front, and so have no opportunity to query the prices of items which had not been agreed upon until you are charged. In this sense, it is also very unprofessional.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a place to stay on Bocas simply because there are so many nicer options available for the price (or for a lot less) which we discovered on our rare trips into town; the beach is beautiful and well worth a visit - but not worth the premium you will pay to stay close by. We were very disappointed and left feeling we had really been taken advantage of, and that the lodge was greedily run; we left very empty-pocketed, having spent almost twice what our budget allowed with no indication of food or travel costs until we arrived. When we queried our bill with the owners they wouldn't even discuss it; the second they had our money there was no reason for them to make any effort anymore and we left the hotel with barely a goodbye from them.
