“A nice hotel with nice staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

If you're looking for luxury in American terms this isn't it. HOWEVER this is in Panama and you don't see a lot of luxury here. The rooms were clean, staff was nice and surprisingly spoke some pretty good English as well !!! I was very comfortable here. If I ever get to visit Isla Colon again, I'd stay here. Food was good too.

The hotel itself is pretty outdated but decent... Come with Medium Expectations and you will be OK, but come expecting LUXURY and you will be disappointed. Hotel is about 10 min from city ($2 by taxi per person) and POOL is the HIGHLIGHT for sure! If you want Beach this is not the spot but we are more into POOLS so this was good. Service is pretty sub par here but the same as everywhere in BOCAS Town. The staff is pleasant but definitely in NO hurry to help. Breakfast is worth including but Dinner is better to go into town and have some variety. Bring some BUG spray for sure as you WILL get bit! Rent Quads if you get the chance as it was definitely FUN!

Room Tip: 3rd Floor facing ocean

This could have been an ok to nice hotel, but the staff are generally unfriendly and uninterested, with some exeptions. The tour guy is pure fraud, dont buy any trips from him, if he is interested in selling you any trips at all. Find another alternative in Bocas is my recommendation. The pool area is nice though.

If you have kids it is the most convenient hotel in Bocas. Good size pool and small game room help with unpredictable Bocas weather. Food and drinks menu are very basic. Not much charm but good views from the rooms. Only drawback is distance from town - about 10 min by taxi. Hotel shuttle available but not as often as to void use of taxi.

While the name of the hotel might imply a typical beach front location it is true, there is a beach but not one you would want to spend time on to go swimming. Instead the hotel has a nice pool to relax in the afternoon after taking a tour to explore the nicer beaches and neighboring islands of Isla Colon and the nearby city of Bocas del Toro. While most of the hotels in Bocas are small or just backpacker places, the Playa Tortuga is a relatively large and modern hotel with good sized rooms, comfortable beds, A/C, cable tv and free WiFi located some 4 miles out of town. A hot breakfast is normally included in the room rate of around US 130 for two during the high season. Breakfast is ok but without fresh fruit juices. The orange juice served from a big container did not resemble the taste of oranges and was just an unidentifiable sweet liquid. Fresh fruit was limited to water melon, papaya, bananas and pineapple and lacked the variety of other tropical fruit such as mangos or maracuya which were typical for this time of year.

While the hotel bar advertised "Happy Hour" after 5 pm it was only the weak and sweet house cocktail "seco sunrise" (a little bit of rum, grenadine and some sweet orange colored liquid) and beer which qualified for the discount. Other favorite and regular (stronger) cocktails of about US $ 7 per glas incl taxes were never discounted.

Because of its unique beach front location and the nice view from the balcony of the room, the nice pool area and its comfortable rooms I would still recommend this hotel for two to three night stays to indulge into the Caribbean atmosphere and to discover the various islands and its beaches

The hotel offers free transportation to the town of Bocas several times a day including a trip leaving the hotel at 7 pm and returning from Bocas at 10.15 pm therefore making it possible to have dinner in town and getting back to the hotel at a decent time. When we were there in March 2014 the hotel did not serve dinner.

We got a beautiful view of the beach, and the swimming pool is top notch. Location really is beautiful here.

The rooms were clean, and nice. It really is a place to relax, if you want that. Some minuses, but nothing worth mentioning.

Room Tip: Ask to get a room with a beach view on the ground floor.

The hotel has a beach front and swimming pool. The hotel is clean but there are stains in the corner of the tiles etc.. still nice and clean. The beds and pillows are hard and the sofa bed was so uncomfortable that the guest that had this bed decided it was more comfortable to sleep onn it as a couch. The pool area is very nice. The food is very over priced and you are better off going into town to eat at Rip Tide or Carlos's Steak House both are better and cheaper. There is no gift shop or store nearby so be sure to stop in Bocas Town for any needs. I definetly recommend Flying Pirates ATV Rentals and their jungle trails for activities as well as Starfleet Scuba for fun.

Room Tip: Stay away from the sofa bed very uncomfortable
