“We felt like kings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

My partner and I just had the pleasure of staying with Dinuka and team at Coco Tangalla and we can't recommend it highly enough. It's a cute boutique hotel tucked away on the beach of Tangalla. If you're looking for a respite from the real world, then this is the place. It's great for relaxing, rejuvenating and enjoying good food and comfort.

Our travel agent booked it for us and I had not read anything about it prior to our arrival, but once we walked in we knew it was special. Dinuka and his team were gracious hosts and made our stay a great mix of good service but not doting over us. We were lucky in that we had the whole place to ourselves for the entire 4 days, a treat one cannot count on, but it made it even more special.

We will return to Sri Lanka just to stay at Coco! It's that good. Great job to Dinuka, Chomil, Isuru and the rest of the Coco team!

Room Tip: There are only 6 rooms and they'll let you choose from the available ones when you arrive.

My partner and I stayed here 2 weekends back to back. When we first pulled up to the house we were a bit surprised by how close it was to the main road, but from the second we pulled into the entrance it was like entering another world. The house is small and very cute. The furniture and decor is modern and chic. We always felt like we were at home especially when we were the only guests and had the whole house to ourselves! The staff were very friendly without being overbearing and were nice to have around - they simply went about their business and when you needed something, you just asked. The biggest highlight of our stay was without a doubt the food. It is exceptional - the potato wedges are to die for and the salads are brimming with fesh and innovative flavours. The fish will always be recommended to you as it is fresh, but I went with the chicken both times. Both chicken dishes were the best I have ever had! I made sure to get the recipe, but probably won't be able to recreate it :( The table was always set very nicely for lunch and dinner. The infinity pool was very relaxing and a perfect temperature. We stayed in the deluxe bedroom which has its own balcony and made all the difference. We had a look at the other rooms when we arrived and were glad we stayed in the biggest room! All the rooms looked very comfortable, but the others were a bit to small for us with no view of the ocean. I suggest not leaving windows or doors open at night as you will get eaten alive by mozzies (even with a mozzie net). The second trip there, we kept the doors closed and didn't get bitten at all. When returning to your room in the evening your bed is decorated with little flowers which was a nice touch. Overall this was a very beautifully done and romantic place to stay. I must say they got it all just right, which is very difficult to find. Only drawback would be the beach. You cant walk on it as its very narrow and is not the cleanest, but the view from the house of the beach is very pretty. If I could make a suggestion it would be to take off about 4 feet from the top of the plants in the backyard so that you can see the ocean more clearly from the pool. Thanks so much to all the staff! :)

Well even though I have been a frequent local traveler and a user of tripadvisor I was never bothered to write a review on any hotel. But my 2 nights stay at Coco Tangalla pushed me to write a review cz I enjoyed the stay and it was my duty to tell how great this place is to the world.
Extremely friendly staff, Easy access to the beach vibrant and fascinating rooms interior, Superb and mouthwatering food… and this list can go on and on.
I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone and places like this makes our country a true paradise.

Thank you Coco Tangalla!

Cheers!

OK - so we were only there for one night (almost by chance - thanks to Aitken Spence Travel, SL) - but what a place!!! The town was in lock-down mode due to Sri Lanka's President's visit to what is his home town, so there was a significant military/security presence, which could put you off your Weeties. However once the gate was shut, you wouldn't know there was another world outside. So we had this fabulous 'private' oasis to ourselves, with all the staff waiting on us hand and foot. Needless to say, we were in the best suite, with balcony overlooking the pool and ocean. The post swim, dreamy pre-dinner atmosphere, gazing out over the blue, blue ocean from the wide, cushioned balcony, sipping cool drinks, made us feel like we really were in a special place - we were. Do any other hotel restaurants sprinkle their guests' dinner table and surrounding floor with petals? The dinner itself...well, words simply cannot adequately describe it. You just had to be there to appreciate the whole experience, including the 'atmosphere' music. The Coco Team certainly has that special 'savoir faire' and serve their visitors with dedication and passion - and it shows. Back at our suite, our large bed had been exquisitely decorated. To say we were reluctant to leave next morning, which our schedule unfortunately necessitated, after a similarly exotic breakfast, would be an understatement. We now know of several other couples who are heading to Sri Lanka and will goad them into putting Coco Tangalla on their 'must stay' (for as looong as possible) list.

Room Tip: Go on - spoil yourselves. You only live once. Treat yourselves. Take the 'ocean balcony' sui...

We stayed for 3 nights in the premium room and could have stayed for 3 weeks. This guest house opened recently and is still a hidden gem. The premium room with its private veranda and outdoor bathroom is gorgeous - I suspect that it is worth booking this room. Lounging around on the veranda watching and listening to the waves with a cup of tea is perfectly relaxing. The staff are really attentive and made an extra effort (particularly with turn down service).

We had two dinners here (one Sri Lankan curry and one spicy Italian). It was the tastiest Sri Lankan curry we had in our three week vacation in Sri Lanka. All in all a wonderful location to while away a few days.

Note that wifi is only available in the common area.

We spent 6 nights at Coco Tangalla (2 adults and 2 kids 10 & 5), and it was a fantastic experience. We had the house to ourselves for the first half of the trip and even when we were joined by another couple at the end – it made no difference in regards to the service we received from the staff. There was around 7 staff on duty each day, they were very friendly and professional but stayed in the background thus allowing you to enjoy your holiday without being hovered over.
The hotel was very tastefully decorated and comfortable enough for you to feel at home. We had the two outside rooms to ourselves with connecting corridor, so this provided peace of mind with the kids. We had a fabulous rain shower in our bathroom as well as a coconut tree growing through the middle and both bathrooms were partially outside – fantastic! The staff provided a turn down service each night which the kids loved as they would decorate the beds each night with flowers and make swans and hearts with the towels, very pretty.
The food was fantastic, fresh and different each day and you were able to advise the staff what you would like to eat that day.
The pool and garden were very clean and maintained to a high standard. We had the sun loungers and towels laid out for us each day. The pool was a good size where all four of us could get in and the kids could splash and have fun.
The staff arranged for a masseur to visit the hotel who provided a wonderful and professional service and made the stay even more luxurious.
If you stay here and need a tuk tuk driver, ask for Upul – he was a genuinely nice man who did his best to ensure you were happy when in his company. He did not try to pressure you into taking trips in order to use his service, which is what made him so endearing. He also went out of his way to bring his personal fishing rods to Coco Tangalla so my husband and son can go sea fishing on the beach. Upul was also the man that showed us this hotel after collecting us from a nearby villa rental which was NOT fit for purpose, we were showed other hotels, cabanas but this one was by far THE BEST!
If I could improve the stay at Coco Tangalla in any way, it would be to have stayed longer!

I had the good fortune to make a 2 night booking at the Coco Tangalla in
Tangalle. It's a renovated old house, overlooking it's own beach, and has
been stylishly fitted out with beautiful furnishings, and a polished cement
bathroom with a cool and breezy ambiance. There is even a coconut tree
growing through the roof!

The hotel is on a main road in Tangalle, but you don't hear any traffic as
the ocean pounding outside your window masks any noise. You feel like you
are on an isolated beach somewhere. There's a lovely pool as well.

The food was excellent, they preparing whatever I wished. At the time, I
was the only guest, so I truly felt like the lady of the house. The attentive
staff fell over themselves to look after you.

I thoroughly recommend Coco Tangalla for a lovely beach stay. There are
only a handful of rooms, so you won't be disturbed by other guests. Each
room is decorated differently. I had the Master bedroom, with a terrace
overlooking the ocean and coconut trees.

The only negative was that all the food prices were quoted to me were not
including their compulsory tax, so when the bill arrived, it was higher than I
was expecting. Surely they can quote prices including tax to avoid confusion?
This was the only instance of this happening in all the hotels I stayed at.

That said, I had a very relaxing time at Coco Tangalle ... it was lovely!

Room Tip: The master suite has a private terrace overlooking the ocean
