We stayed in the Amangalle , then the Amanwella .
The food, cocktails and generous hospitality was way and beyond. Beautiful stylish rooms. A wonderful oasis.
I would defiantly return? It is not easy to find good food in Sri Lanka , this was how I imagine was eating at home in Sri Lanka .

We booked our holiday late and were unimpressed by value-for-money of the remaining available hotels on the beach around Tangalle, so we chose Maya. In general it was really lovely. They have very nicely completed the refurbishment of an old colonial house, and the setting is very relaxing. The pool was perfect and the grounds were great, with lounge chairs and hammocks strategically placed throughout the garden. We saw several peacocks in the adjacent paddy field, including one fly away in the sunset!

What we didn't realise before we arrived was that this hotel was quite so far away from anything. The tiny nearby village is at least a 10 minute walk, and Tangalle is in reality about 15-20 minutes by car. Even Tangalle doesn't have much to offer by way of food, so you really have to eat in the other hotels on the beach or in Maya itself. The food at Maya is great. We just like to have options.

Nicest beach nearby was at the Amanwella. We let the hotel arrange for a private dinner for us there, which was very nice and recommended.

Room Tip: The new building rooms are more private, but the old house is realy beautiful.

We have just returned from our trip to Sri Lanka as an holiday but also to have our wedding. I researched for a long time for the right place for us. I wanted somewhere stunningly beautiful, private and where we could organize all of the small details that would make it special so when I found Maya and started to communicate with the owner i knew this was the place. E mails where send back and forth and Niki and her team helped me plan it to the last little detail. We wanted a mixture of a Sri Lankan and Western and blessings from the Buddhist monks. We got all of this and more. It is difficult to explain in words what a wonderful mixture of sound , colour and atmosphere there was on that day but it was divine. As this is a review about Maya as a villa and not just our wedding the compliments just keep coming. We stayed in the old waddua which is the part that was re built and what an high standard it is yet it fits seemingly with the new rooms , the massive pool at an L that seperates the two buildings. Then there are the gardens that just flow with the rice paddy fields behind and it really is just like paradise with all the birds calling including the peacocks that roam through, sit in the hammock with a book and a cocktail, pure bliss. That leads to the another of the special things about Maya, the food its just sublime, even the snacks are so nice , and the cocktails wow, we also ate out and the staff will organize anything you want to do, and even though its not on the beach we just took the tuk tuk down there whenever we wanted then came back to the peace of Maya. Finally I would like to mention every single member of staff, everyone of them so courteous and helpful without being obtrusive the perfect blend. So weather it is for a special occasion or just to stay somewhere very special don't hesitate just go you cant help but love it

Room Tip: all rooms perfect

Maya provides an indulgent getaway from busy city life. Just a 15 mins drive from the beautiful beaches of the southern coast, Maya has that peaceful, luxurious setting which makes it both an intimate and relaxing place to stay. With just five rooms, there is plenty of space, lots of attention from the team, fabulous food and cocktails - to be had by the pool or somewhere in their expansive tropical gardens.
The design and style of the property are not only immaculate but perfectly in line with the colonial architecture. Maya offers the best of what Sri Lanka has on show - an exotic escape, luxury and style. I would go back any time!

In the interest of full disclosure,we went to Maya as friends of the owner but also as paying guests:The juxtaposition of the new wing and grown up length pool and the original house makes for an intimate setting within the expansive and verdant surroundings where scarcely a sign of human existence can be seen.Morning walks around the nearby hamlet and paddy fields were opportunities to see and be greeted by the local community, catch glimpses of the local bird and other wildlife under the watchful protection of Maya's housedogs Patch and Pucci.Beach trips to Indie's and Mahawalla offered boogieboarding and picnic opportunities and a chance to see the neighbourhood with an Eski in tow for refreshment. For dining ,Maya itself is the best option for miles around, including the AmanWalla from which guests seeking more authentic flavours and variety seem to come regularly.Service is excellent, embracing everything from a bloody Mary with fresh tomato juice to preemptive protection from local entertainers and their pyrotechnics, though it remains unobtrusive and dressed for work rather than pageant.Rooms are spacious, with 6m pitched roofs and tastefully decorated. We shall return.

Room Tip: New wing rooms are a little more private and have a modern feel while the original house offers a mo...

Friends and I took the whole house for Christmas - it was superb.

We were wonderfully looked after by Parera, Dinesh and the team.

The lovely house is in a great setting with every available comfort and generous service.

Many thanks to Nikki and your crew of wonderful guys

Hugs
