After 2 weeks travelling in Sri Lanka, we were ready to relax and do nothing, which is exactly what we did at Buckingham Place.
We were welcomed by Jaleel and Nick, who both explained that the hotel is designed to be whatever you want it to be, and that they want you to feel at home, which we did!! If you wanted to be kept busy, they would arrange trips for you, or if you wanted to be left to relax, then that is exactly what would happen. We were not disappointed!
Our room was just incredible-it was huge! And the bathroom was amazing! I like the fact that the room was only serviced if you needed it to be-someone would ask you every morning if you needed it doing. I have read other reviews that complained about it not being done everyday-it can be if you wish it to be,but in keeping with the 'home from home' idea-who gets their rooms at home 'serviced' every day?! If there was something you needed however, you could always just ask, and it would happen within 30 mins.
We asked Jaleel to arrange a trip to Mirissa to go whale watching. We got picked up very early in the morning, and after a good 5 hours on the boat, arrived back at the hotel around 2pm. We headed straight for the restaurant, and were offered breakfast as we had missed it. Now to us, this was just amazing!! Breakfast is served everyday from 8.30am, until whenever! Most hotels would not let you have breakfast at this time, but as Nick explained, we had paid for it, so why not have it?! I shall point out here that he did also offer something off the lunch menu if we preferred, to substitute for missed breakfast, but the breakfasts were just so good!
The food was just beautiful. There was a good varied choice of breakfast, lunch/snacks and dinner. If you were about during the day someone would ask if you wanted to order dinner, and what time you would like to eat that night. The food is all cooked fresh, and so I think this was a good way of ensuring you didn't have to wait too long in the evening. I think we did order one night when we arrived in the restaurant, but the wait was nothing that I wouldn't have expected, and to be honest don't mind waiting for freshly prepared food (better that than microwaved, which is what we get a lot of in the UK!)
The rice and curries were honestly the best we had in 3 weeks in Sri Lanka! There was one night that I ordered a salad off the menu, as I didn't fancy anything too big, but the restaurant manager (really sorry I can't remember his name as he was so friendly and helpful) suggested a pasta dish, which was not on the menu He checked with the chef, and this was cooked for me with no issues! The ethic of the restaurant was that if you didn't want anything off the menu, or you didn't like what you had ordered tell, them and they would change it. Well I'm not sure how you could not enjoy the food, but at least the option was there!
The pool area was lovely, obviously enhanced by Ginger, the resident pony, who is just like an enlarged pet dog!
The beach, less than 70m from the hotel, was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Absolutely deserted, as you can't swim in the sea, but that is a small price to pay. We even saw some baby turtles hatching and making their way to the water!
Every single member of staff there was exceptionally friendly, and could not do enough for you. I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel like it before, or will again!
I really liked how friendly the owner Nick was, and he was about every day. That just doesn't happen elsewhere-you never see the owner who is usually elsewhere spending their money!! He, like all the other staff, seemed really concerned that you were enjoying yourself, could he or they do anything for you, fetch you anything!! He remembered our names, which seems a silly thing to say, but really made the stay personal. He would make a point of coming to talk to you every evening to ask how your day had been, but don't worry, this is not overbearing or 'clicky', it is just genuine friendliness and concern that you are enjoying your holiday!
Overall, excellency in every little thing! I have probably missed something out, but I can guarantee, whatever it is, it was excellent!!

To have such fabulous guests come to stay is our privilege, for them to write so eloquently about their experience afterwards is heart warming, rewarding and the provider of much job satisfaction for all of us.
I’m especially pleased to see our restaurant feature highly in your review, coming in as it does for much praise. It is still 'early days' so all feedback is most welcome and helpful. I’m happy to see that by making an effort we are satisfying many of our guests with menu choice and the way we operate the restaurant itself. ‘Breakfast when you wake up’ occasionally disrupts the kitchen and surely the cooking crew think it’s a bonkers policy at times - but why not? It’s your holiday, why can’t you just wake up and take breakfast whenever you want to?
You kindly compliment Buckingham Place and its team in very many ways whilst reassuring travellers that not only is this hotel ok to stay at but, that the nearby beach and this part of the island offer something special too. Thank you for underlining this, it helps travellers and us a great deal.
Well.... if you want to stay at an hotel like this again.... you only need to return! I for one will be thrilled to welcome you back – the entire team would be too, of that I’m sure. Thank you very much for coming and then following up with such a magnificent vote of confidence.
Please come again!
Warmest regards from Nick & the Team
