“Lovely stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

We had three nights at Mangrove, staying in one of the beach cabanas. They are gorgeous wooden huts and we loved the architectural design with the bathroom underneath, but the staircase down is very steep and we were worried about falling down in the middle of the night! If you are less mobile or have kids, this might not be for you...

Rani the manager on sight was very helpful in organising safari trips to Yala and Uda Walawe, and we loved the food - great breakfasts and fantastic Sri Lankan curries (although you must order well in advance and they are not always available). Delicious prawns and fish as well.

The beach is very rough, and the rock pool safe for swimming is closer to the chalets - maybe 3-5 mins walk up the beach. There is a bar/restaurant there as well, and they provided coconuts to guests for free. Nice touch.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much but it was probably not as friendly or intimate as other places we stayed.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Mangrove Beach Cabanas (note that there's the separate and a bit less attractive Mangroove Beach Chalets -same owners). This place is professionally run (not all the staff members are equally friendly, though), clean and the cabanas are really cozy. The restaurant serves very tasty food and a range of good cocktails at ok prices. Even the soft music in the bar is extremely appropriate and relaxing. The Cabanas are located in front of the sea, and waking up listening to the sea waves and the wide range of singing birds found there is an unforgettable experience. Due to strong ocean currents, you can't really go swimming except in a relatively small natural pool in front of the beach. But then, you can use their canoes to explore the canal/lagoon (definitely something NOT to be missed).

Amazing setup. Beautiful beach on your doorstep, great food, friendly staff, highly recomended.

This place is at the far end of the beach and the sea isn't wry safe for swimming but the setting more than makes up for it.

You could happily stay at the place for a few days but if you want to go out eat elsewhere there are a few options within walking distance down the beach.

Wish we'd had stayed for a couple more days.

We loved our stay in this beachside paradise. The family chalets were roomy and modern with 2 queen sized four poster beds with mosquito nets, polished concrete floors and lovely timber finishings. Step straight from the chalet patio onto the sand and stroll through the coconut grove with hammocks to the beachside bar for brekky or lunch. The beach here is clean and safe for swimming because of the little reef in front. There are plenty of lovely beach lounges, hammocks etc for relaxing. The staff were lovely. We asked Nerangana one day if they had a cricket bat so we could play some beach cricket. They didn't have one but he made a phone call and within an hour we had a brand new cricket bat and tennis ball to play with! Talk about 5 star service!

Dinner orders were put in at the beachside bar before 5pm and then it was ready over at the lovely lagoon side restaurant at the time you designate. The food was great and beer, wine and cocktails were well-priced. We also had lovely massages that were good value for money. We enjoyed paddling in kayaks in the lagoon. This place is an idealic paradise. I didn't wear shoes or makeup for our 3 days there. The photos don't do this place justice I don't think. Highly recommended for a relaxing beachside getaway.

Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights - but this nights were amazing. The Mangrove Beach Cabanas are situated directly on the wonderful beach and because it is the last resort on the beach it is very secluded and quiet. You can walk on the beach for 1,2 or more hours and you won't meet any other tourist, only some fishermen or some locals. You can't swim at sea, but there is a small rock pool in front of the Mangrove Chalets (3 minute walk)

Apart from that you can enjoy the day whilst relaxing on the beach or in the hammocks, having some coconuts, walking through the small village beyond, kayaking and of course you can do some sightseeing as well. We definitely felt like beiing in paradise! The staff was great - and the breakfast as well. For dinner you can choose from the menu, the food was very good, but it is expensive and not really authentic.

The wooden Beach Cabanas are modern, very clean and romantic. Whilst sleeping you can hear the ocean, thats so nice! The bathroom is downstairs and very spacious, but you have to expect cold water (anyway, its hot outside).

If you are looking for the paradise, then you have to go to the Mangrove Beach Cabanes!

The first thing you need to understand (because I dont think it was that clear to me) is that the Chalets and the Bungalows are separated by a lagoon that feeds into the sea. The stretch of beach covered by the two sister hotels is about 200 meters of rugged and deserted beach and its probably a 5 minute walk along the beach between the chalets & the bungalows.

Whilst I believe that the Bungalow hotel does have its own restaurant / bar, having now seen the sites my view is that it is worth paying for the Chalets, because the main beach bar and restaurant are located on that site and my personal view is that the chalet location is more beautiful, shaded from the beach by probably 50 stunning palm trees. I also think there was a bit of a better vibe at the Chalets from what I could see.

1. The Accommodation : The accommodation itself (the Chalets) are refined and considered - the polished concrete floors & walls and stained timber furniture make for tasteful surrounds. For the price, I thought the accommodation was excellent value for money (we paid 47 euro per night room only) and some of the nicest accommodation we found in Sri Lanka (unless you are wanting to pay a lot more for 5 star)

2. The Beach : Practically deserted, you and your fellow Mangrovians will have the beach pretty much to yourself. It is true that the beach water here is wild and in parts can be dangerous. There is a small reef / rocks right out the front of the Chalet part of the hotel that create a mini bay for swimming - when I say swimming I more mean paddling and floating - so if you want to be doing a lot of swimming this isnt the beach for you. Personally I think the stunning surrounds more than make up for it... We chose it as our first beach stop before heading to Mirissa and Unawatuna and whilst Mirissa is lovely and has better swimming water, I think we we have been spoilt by our days at Tangalle!

3. The Food : Probably my biggest criticism of the hotel is the food BUT when we stopped eating the western food on the menu and switched to the Sri Lankan we were much happier! The Sri Lankan food on offer is delicious and much better than the western food. Because of the remote location its best to opt for the half board option (breakfast and dinner).

5. The Staff : So lovely! My husband is vegetarian and they went out of their way to try and accommodate his food requests. Very charming and lovely guys at the beach hut.

Summary : A fantastic, stunning place in which to spend a couple of days before heading on to still charming but perhaps more populated beaches with better swimming conditions.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

I have been to 82 countries, and visited hundreds of beaches all over the world but this place is no. 1 in beach resort! The chalets are big and beautiful, clean and comfortable. The beach bar is great, with hangmatts everywhere and free coconuts. The staff is very friendly and helpfull, the location is perfect. It was very difficult to leave! I wish we had stayed for a week! There is swimming in the beach just at the lenghth of the resort, because of the rocks further outside, it's like a big pool, good for children. It's the only place possible for swimming at Marakolliya beach.

Room Tip: Every chalet is good. The cabanas are much smaller than the chalets. Swimming in ocean is only possi...
