“Dining room with a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Friendly staff, good food and a dining room with a fabulous view of the rock. A table was set up in the gardens for dinner for us on one evening. Unfortunately the room was a bit musty however the laundry service was excellent and reasonably priced.

Great location and base for Sigiriya Rock and daubulla caves. Amazing view of the rock from the bar. No food available after 10 but great breakfast both European and Sri Lanka. The string hoppers were fab for our first try.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a tour of Sri Lanka. Its location is excellent for its proximity to Sigiraya Rock, so it is very convenient. Unfortunately the rooms are gloomy - the perennial problem with many hotels - ie poor lighting - definitely applies here. The rooms smelled slightly damp (possibly due to the humidity) and the beds were pretty hard and uncomfortable. The bathroom was very basic too. There is a nice bar area, and the range of food in the restaurant was fairly good, but why is the dining area so dark and gloomy? Bit surprised Kuoni are using this hotel for their tour customers, when there are better options less than 10 mins away.

I stayed at the Hotel Sigiriya for three nights as part of a tour around Sri Lanka.

To start with the positives, the hotel is in a great location, only a five minute drive from the bottom of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The bar and pool area are very nice, with an amazing view up onto the rock. The restaurant was pretty good with a decent buffet.

However, the quality of the rooms really lets down the hotel. There is nothing wrong with the layout of the rooms, or the basic cleanliness, but there were lots of other details that when added together made the stay disappointing.

Tea and coffee facilities were provided in the room, however the plug for the kettle did not match the wall socket (two pin plug, three pin socket, so my adapter was unhelpful). A member of my group asked the staff about this and was told that the solution was to stick a pen in the third socket hole! Needless to say, I did not attempt this, and it made me wonder if the two power cuts that occured on the first night were due to some poor soul trying to make a cup of tea!

The bathroom was very clean, however the shower pressure was so weak it was just a dribble. There was a hairdryer holder with no hairdryer, which would not have been a big deal, except I know that there were hairdryers in other rooms and so this seemed inconsistent.

When following the intructions on the safe, a loud alarm went off, as it had obviously not been reset after the last user. I tried to phone reception to get someone to come and fix it, only to realise the phone also didn't work, meaning I had to run to reception, which was on the opposite side of the hotel.

I kept on finding small piles of grit on one of the beds (twin beds pushed together). At first, I thought that maybe the cleaner had just put something on the bed, like a dustpan, which had left the debris. However, this grit appeared every day, even after the room had been cleaned, which made me think that there must have been termites or something in the wooden roof, and that the grit was tiny wood shavings falling from the ceiling.

The room was very dark, which didn't really bother me, until on a brighter day, I noticed that the sheets were covered with stains!

Every member of my group experienced trouble with their room in some form or another. One couple had to move room due to an overpowering drain smell, and another didn't have working ceiling lights, and when maintenance arrived, they only managed to fix one.

It just seems to me that if these rooms are properly checked and prepared before guests arrive, there should not be these issues and inconsistencies. It's such a shame, as this has the potential to be a lovely hotel.

I liked the location of hotel, bit away from the crowd and close to jungle area. The rooms are good and comfortable with all required facilities. The sleep quality was also good and bathroom amenities were great. However, the appearance of rooms from the outside and the way it has been constructed is not appealing. The cleanliness around the hotel, its landscape, decoration etc were not at all attractive for me. The restaurant and bar was very good though and its always better to go with full board package as paying separately for food can be more expensive than package. The buffet dinner was just great and there was lots to choose from. The same with breakfast which was a good experience. Sitting and relaxing in front of swimming pool which is just next to the bar as well, was a great as you can see the rock mountain from there. Staff were generally very helpful and cooperative. There is also a spa which is okay but with less staff. I took a hotel bicycle to go around and the cycling around was great. Except going to the rock mountain, I could not manage to find any other information from the hotel on "what - where". In such a hotel, I was expecting lots of indoor activities to entertain and keep guest busy which was not there at all. The hotel is expensive compare to the facilities and activities they have. But overall experience was still great and I enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Any room facing the rock mountain (or windows opening at mountain side)

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel. It's an excellent location to go and visit the Sigirya Rock. The buffet offers a wide range of excellent dishes. The hotel is located amidst the jungle and it happens that while you are swimming you can see play monkeys in the trees and surroundings. We can also recommend the ayurveda massages.

Started our 9 day tour of SL here for our honeymoon in Oct 2012 and what a great start it was! Great hotel, with a stunning view of Sigiriya Rock from the hotel bar/swimming pool area. Rooms were nice and big with pleasant surprises each night at turnover. The staff were very friendly, always willing to stop for a chat or offer advice if needed. They welcomed us like we were royalty and looked after our every need. We also spent a day in the spa which provided some great treatments for very reasonable prices. The guys at dinner/breakfast also took time to have a chat with all guests. Talking of food, the chefs were very accommodating when it came to asking for dishes that were not on the menu given my particular eating requirements. I'd definitely go back for another few days there! It was definitely the best out of all of the hotels we stayed in over the trip.
