“Disappointing ...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Definitely the worst place we stayed during our stay in Sri Lanka ...

The room itself was very dark, even with all the lights available turned on, although this did help to hide the mould and cobwebs on the walls.

The en-suite is just a walled off area within the room, i.e. the walls don't reach the ceiling ... if you appreciate a basic level of privacy, head elsewhere. And the bathroom was pretty dirty as well ...

The bed linen was weird .. the sheets didn't cover the entire bed! I thought it might have shrunk during the night due to my sweating .. seems not though.

Food was very average .. at breakfast there was a point where I didn't know what to choose .. cold toast or cold and damp crepe ... Some evenings you are only able to have the buffet, again that was pretty disappointing.

I stayed at this place for 1 night due to the excellent location in the Cultural Triangle. Rooms are very very basic- dark, spartan, full of mosquitos and whilst clean, lack any form of aesthetic attraction. There is a pool of sorts and a relatively large, slightly untended garden. The breakfast is fine. We returned a little late from dinner at one of the better hotels that night and could hear the howling of dogs. We followed the noise (the garden is quite dimly lit at night) and found several staff members standing around the pool area laughing and joking. I saw some street dogs limping away towards the back of the property behind the guest rooms and didn't understand the connection until I made out one of the staff hiding behind the bushes with a rifle. I jumped, not feeling very comfortable with the fact that he was holding a rifle, pointed in the direction of the guest rooms and realised that he had been shooting at the dogs. I immediately made a fuss and was told in a placatory manner that the rifle was for birds and didn't kill the dogs, just injured or maimed them. The staff looked ever so proud of themselves and you could tell that this was their nightly form of entertainment or 'target practice'. God forbid if a guest wandered out of their room just as a dog was passing their door. I was pretty angry at what I consider to be cruelty to animals and a general lack of consideration for the safety of their guests but the staff 'pfff-ed' at me and dispersed. So much for Eden...
If you have any concerns for the welfare of animals, your safety or the safety of your kids, I would suggest that 'Eden Garden' is not the place for you.

We stayed for 3 nights. This was not a place we will remember for its character and the slightly soul-less brightly lit restaurant area with buffet dinner/breakfast arrangements is better suited to the minibus tours that visit the cultural triangle than a couple travelling independently.
That said, the rooms were really large and perfectly comfortable [bathroom not massively impressive but had a bath and hot water which was a really lovely treat!]. The staff were friendly and very accommodating and while the food was maybe not so inspiring it was fine and generously portioned. Its best asset was that it is very practically located 2 mins from the bus stop at Inamaluwa junction. We were travelling by bus so it was great to be able to walk to / from the bus stop arriving from Kandy and to go to Polonnaruwa etc. It was about 15 minutes by tuk tuk to the Sigiriya Rock and the hotel also introduced us to a nice local guy called Bubba who [aside from knowing alot about renaissance British poetry] took us on an elephant tour [we saw some really magnificent ones!] and also taught us about the local birdlife which we also really enjoyed. A man of many talents…
All in all while maybe not the most charming hotel, Eden Garden was perfectly fine, had very nice staff and was a very useful base from which to see the sights we had come to see.

Our bus from Anuradhapura dropped us off at Dambulla. From here, we took a tuk tuk to this hotel. Located midway between Dambulla and Sigiriya rock, this hotel is very conveniently located. As all the other hotels we considered were booked, we settled in on this place.

The room was clean and spacious enough but pretty basic. It needs better lighting and ventilation. The corridors were all dimly lit too. The staff were pretty helpful but a tad slow to respond. Breakfast is decent fare. There is a swimming pool but we weren't that tempted to use it. The rooms and hotel grounds can be maintained better and need some overhauling. Food is pricy here. We stayed only for a night. This hotel is not suited for long stays but is great as a base for a day's sightseeing in Sigiriya and Dambulla.

We got free from Anuradhapura early but could not make it to Sigiriya rock on time so had to find a place to stay that night, Luckily there was a room available that night for 3 people. Decent and clean. A swimming pool is also there for few laps and buffet was also good. It also provides driver accommodation.

Being located about 10km away from Sigiriya rock and the lake, in a secluded place next to a big junction, Hotel Eden Garden doesn't offer the perfect location for a holiday. The staff at the hotel wasn't very bright either. Since the roof was leaking all over the place, roofers were walking on and off the roof for hours in the early morning, which made it very hard to sleep in, and if this was even possible, the staff would awake you by calling early in the morning to inform you about the breakfast. The restaurant and the food at the hotel was lacking inspiration and a little bit depressing. On the upside our room was quite spacy and clean.
