“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

I would like to say a huge thankyou for our lovely stay at your hotel in Apri 2012l. The hotel
was really amazing, one of the best places we have ever stayed! The villa was beautiful. We were in one that was the furthest away from the main building, so very private. The combination of indoor and outdoor rooms is very clever and really makes you feel in touch with the surroundings - especially negotiating the creepy crawlies on the way to the bathroom and the outdoor shower - as long as you enjoy and appreciate nature this is a good thing!! The staff were always friendly, cheerful and the service was outstanding. It really seems that everyone takes great pride in working there - and rightly so! We really appreciated them telling us about the local wildlife and showing me the book of birds.
We loved the walk up the rock, guided by one of the hotel staff, it was one our greatest memories of the holiday! The food was fantastic and the setting of the open sided restaurant was wonderful. We miss it very much!!
A great base to explore Sigiriya and the Dambulla rock caves.

We stayed at Wild Grass for 1 night and enjoyed the overall experience - particularly the food. Both dinner and breakfast were superb and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are very spacious and the bed is super comfortable. The open air bathroom was also a great feature. My only minor complaint would be the ants which seemed to surround the toilet seat at all times but that is what you get when you are out in the wilderness!!!

Like another reviewer, when we first arrived I had my doubts. The main building, on first appearance, is a bit big and stark. However, as soon as you have a meal upstairs you realise why the building has to be so tall!

Off to the villa - we had the second villa and it was quite simply amazing. A real feeling of 'is this really all ours'! We had a poke around the first villa and I would say the second one is considerably superior, so well worth asking if it's available.

A beautiful building, great use of wood and concrete, great terrace leading off the bedroom which was itself huge and very well done. The outdoor shower is genius but we appreciated the fact that in our villa the shower was the only thing which was outdoors.

Good food with very attentive service, although the steamed fish was a bit overcooked. Rice and curry was amazing here. There is a lot of hovering and rearranging of cutlery (which would drive some people mad) but it is so well meaning and the guys are just lovely so it's not a problem.

We were the only guests on the last night and they arranged a table for us on the upper terrace, the candelit dinner under the perfect sky was simply a beautiful experience.

My criticism of Wild Grass is that the pool area really is below par; basically a few loungers without cushions sitting in the dirt. The owner really needs to invest in the pool area; obviously guests tend to have busy itineraries in this area so probably don't care too much about the pool but if you are going to have a pool you should have a good area around it.

I almost forgot to mention one of the most amazing things about Wild Grass - it has its own rock! You absolutely must hop up the WIld Grass rock at sunset, we almost didn't get around to doing it but it is unbelievable. It is absolutely unmissable; it is perfect because you are high enough to see everything around you (a wonderful 360 degree view including of course the Sigiriya rock) but not too high above the tree canopy.

The place is really quite nice, but for the expensive price we paid we would have highly appreciated to be able to sleep properly! The place is not mosquito proof at all and we spent one sleepless night just fighting with the annoying noise and scratching ourselves like crazy! The next day we complained with the manager and i have to say he was extremely kind doing what he could. He provided us with a small mosquito net that we fitted on the bed, but it was not fitting properly and we had to constantly pay attention on not getting it untagles. After 2 poor nights like that we left one day in advance. The manager was very sorry and extremely kind. He took the computer (desktop computer and monitor) all the way to the terrace to allow us to get some signal for the USB key internet connection - in order to allow us to find another place to stay. He didn't charge us for the extra night we didn't spend. From the management point of view, we can only say good things.
Food was really disappointing. They were trying hard to make an effort to serve European type of food (with average results) when it could have been so much tastier and culturally attractive to have local food served. We wouldn't recomment this place.

Spent 2 nights here in the Family Villa. We were attracted to Wild Grass as "something different" from most of the options to see the cultural triangle and were not disappointed. Each Villa is secluded and screened by the jungle and is well appointed and furnished. The outdorr showers are a nice quirk, although if You want hot water get there first! fitting with the resort water is heated by solar power and we found that there was not quite enough to have a hot shower for 4 people 2x a day, but a minor gripe. The Staff were all very friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. The only minor criticisms I could level are that there could be a wee bit more light on the dining table so you could see the fantastic food and sometimes the serving staff can be a bit over-attentive - e.g. moving wine glasses on the table to their setting the table position when clearing plates. They have clearly been well trained in dining room etiquette. but some may find this fussiness just a little over-bearing when trying to relax on vacation.

Would i stay here again? Yes without doubt, although probably for no more than 3-4 nights.
Would i recommend to friends? Yes, if they are friends who would like a more secluded and laidback place to stay. For those who may prefer somewhere to socialise with other guests maybe not.

If you only stay in one hotel in Sri Lanka, make it this one. It is truly remarkable. It is a little off the beaten track but worth the effort.

The villas are something else. So much thought has gone into the design. I must admit, when we arrived at 7.30pm in the dark, I wasn't sure: the reception looks like a concrete unfinished building. But how wrong could I have been? It's just part of the natural, minimal look that this hotel manages to pull off beautifully. We stayed in the one bedroom villa. The upstairs bedroom was spacious - we had a double and single bed and loads of room. The room had floor to ceiling windows all around giving you fantastic views of the countryside. At night, geckos and frogs cling to the windows; in the morning you wake up to views of the mountains and lake. The bathroom and downstairs lounge area are open to the elements allowing you to feel like you are "at one with nature". And outside showers are the future! Even our 7 year old took one. Recommendation indeed.

The pool is heated and clean. Given that only 15 guests can stay here at one time, it feels like a private pool. Again, it is cleverly concealed behind trees and invisible from the track from reception. The grounds are pretty much unspoiled. We only wish we had more time here to explore them fully. We were offered a guide and picnic to take us up to the nearby hill to view the sunset but we just didn't have enough time.

Perhaps the greatest asset is the staff. They are attentive but not overly so. Nothing is too much trouble and all done with a smile. They seem relaxed which helps guests settle in quickly. Whilst we were there we challenged them to a cricket match - 5 a side with some demon bowling. Excellent and one of our holiday highlights. The food was the best we had on our holiday. You are invited into the kitchens and staff want to share with you cooking techniques for Sri Lankan dishes. I recommend the rice and curry - sounds simple, but you get 5-6 different dishes. We had this two night's running - and never the same rice or curry dish twice. They do offer more European dishes which are great for children.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. We only wish we had booked a week there and not two nights.

Room Tip: They are all fabulous.

We spent 3 nights here in the family suite. We were the only guests and had an extremely relaxing time. It is a very small and quiet resort but the accommodation is very good (particularly liked the outdoor showers) and the staff are very helpful. Food is well prepared although the portions can be on the small side. The best thing was the margaritas - huge, strong and only £3.50! It was also a nice touch to receive a complimentary bottle of wine on our last night.
The resort is a long way from anywhere so be prepared for long and bumpy journeys. We visited Sigirya Rock (well worth it) and Polunwarra (not so interesting) and also did an elephant safari (probably not worth doing unless you haven't seen elephants in the wild before).
All in all this was a very relaxing, natural resort - be prepared to see lots of insects!
One small complaint - it would have been nice to have had cushions on the sunbeds around the lovely pool.
