“Great service from staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

The hotel is well located for visiting Sigiriya Rock, it's only a 15 min walk away. It is quite isolated and doesn't have a pool so it can be a bit boring in the evening. The rooms are pretty basic but the bed was decent and we got a good nights sleep. We had dinner and breakfast here and both were quite good. The reason I'm giving it 5 stars is because the manager went out of his way to order the premium sports channels in the restaurant when I asked if they were showing the football. I thought this was a nice gesture as all I did was enquire if they had the channel. Overall we found the staff very friendly and this was good value for money.

We stayed here for two nights to explore the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya rock, Polonnaruwa, Minneriya National Park, Dambulla). The hotel was very pleasant in terms of service, rooms and food. Staff are sometimes a bit clumsy, but with a little bit of help by the lovely owner everything is sorted promptly and efficiently. The national dish Rice and Curry is amazing at the Lion Rock and freshly cooked. The rooms are clean and spacious and there's also hot water, which is quite rare in Sri Lanka.
The garden is full of exotic trees and beautiful flowers making the hotel a little oasis.
There's not much around, so you'll probably need to check with the owner to arrange for tours etc. Our fabulous driver Calli (Callistus) Amarakoon arranged for all of our tours in the local area and helped us get the best prices in the National Park.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The hotel is owned by our tour operator (Colombo Railway Tourist Information.. who do have a skeptical reputation, however our experience with them was good).

From here we visited the Cultural Triangle.
The rooms are clean and the beds are good. They have allot of space around there building which they spend wisely with allot of nature giving it a peacefull place to stay. The staff was very helpful and nice and the food was also excellent. The hotel is in walking distance (10/15min) from Sigiriya Rock so no need for a driver/TucTuc

Room Tip: Ask from the rooms on the first floor so you have less bugs and maybe a view of Sigiriya Rock

I have visited Sigiriya several times and always chose to stay here at the Lion Rock Hotel. The rooms are furnished with quality fittings and well sprung mattresses ensuring a great nights sleep.
The manager Samman is a great host, and has to multitask even in the kitchen as his staff can sometimes do with a point in the right direction they are friendly but at times a little slow.

Its a very enjoyable and safe walk to the Lions Rock and a good base for trips to Polonaruwa and Dambulla. Samman can arrange trips for jeep elephant safaris as well as the best place to take in a massage.

Hopefully the owner will take up my suggestion and put up hammocks and benches in their large garden so you can while away the hours reading a book. There is free fast wifi connection which is an added bonus.

Contact Samman direct on 0773136647 its only a few hours from the airport so why not start your adventure there!

The Lion Rock is a decent hotel. The rooms are a good size, clean and represent reasonable value for money.

They location is pretty good for the Lion Rock (15 mins walk) though there seemed little else around. If you're only going to Sigiria for one reason then this is probably not an issue - it wasn't for me.

On the down side, the food was pricey and I've certainly had better. This is an obvious area of improvement.

I didn't stay anywhere else and only was at the Lion's Rock for one night but it was good enough for 1 night.
