“Excellent Hotel & Staff - One Eye Sore!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This is a excellent propery that is set with a backdrop of the Sigiriya Rock, the property has a lot of monkeys, birds (white cranes & peacock) that are a constand feature around the hotel. The pool is very nice and the staff are extreemly helpful. The room service orders are prompt and quick and over all a very pleasent experience. We stayed here for 2 nights and the food was excellent and they varied the food on both days so that you do not get bored eating the same stuff routinely.

Here is my complaint. On the first day during dinner my wife had asked one of the chef's if the soup was vegetarian as my mother is a pure vegetarian and my wife is alergic to fish. The chef or one of the guys with the Chef hat said it was vegetarian but I had my doubts and instructed my mother not to touch the soup till I confirmed it with the Chef. Then I went up to the guy and asked "ARE YOU SURE ITS VEGETARIAN", I have been to bangkok many times and I know tha Tom Yum soup is always made with fish sauce unless it it cooked for a buddist monk. I started to ask pointed question " Does it have beef"? Does it have Chicken ? Does it have pork ? When I get to does it have Fish--- The Fool said "Sorry SIR it has FISH".
I was annoyed at this and told him "YOU OF ALL PEOPLE MUST KNOW YOUR INGREDIENTS" as being from Sri Lanka you know that people have religious practises and do not eat meat/fish. He said he was sorry!

I spoke to the restaurant manager and that maybe they should label their food as Veg / Non-Veg so that they can help Vegetarians, Vegans etc also that their staff be adequately educated!. I expect that one say "I am not sure I will find out" instead of confidently saying Veg without proper knowledge of the ingredients.

There were a lot of ants in the room. Also we asked for extra towels to use as floor mats in the bathroom as the floor is very slippery when you walk from the shower area, our 2.5 year old daughter slipped and fell flat in the bathroom due to this.

We spent several nights here, including new years eve. We were lucky in that we arrived a couple of days after the area had been hit by torrential rain, so whilst there were still pools of water around the ground it wasn't as bad as earlier visitors had experienced. Upon our arrival the first thing that strikes you is the view of Sigiryia (Lions Rock), the second is the landscape surrounding the hotel - it sort of has the feel of an african savannah. The rooms or cabins are scattered throughout the grounds all linked by raised footpaths (which means if it rains you have a small causeway to traverse). The pool area provides a refreshing break from the heat & humidity - its setting amongst the surround bush is spectacular.
The hotel staff were really helpful and the meal/entertainment that they put on for new years eve was amazing - though the dj's playlist was a bit dated they still managed to get many people on the dancefloor, the fireworks were great - would have stayed up longer if it wasn't for the fact we were heading up Lions Rock earlier the next morning (not something I wanted to try with a hangeover & not much sleep).
The rooms were clean and functional - the double bed was in fact two singles seperated by a wooden frame, the television reception was really poor and there was no wifi in the rooms, the indoor/outdoor bathroom was delightful (even if it took us a while to wrk out that you had to turn on the booster switch to get any hot water). In saying that why do you need those modern disrtractions when you are surrounded by nature in all its glory.

Room Tip: Try and get a room close to the dining area. Remember to turn on the booster switch (located outside...

A lot of birds and squirrels on the resort and a view on Sigiriya rock. Meals were oke, but not excellent. At the lobby and the swimming pool a lot of small flies (maybe we were unlucky with the weather). The rooms were modern and spacious (nice bathroom!), but also a humid smell that the cleaner could not get out of the room. A bit of a pity for such a nice location.

It was our first hotel in Sri Lanka so it shaped our impressions of the island. Our cabin was not too big and simple, the air condition was squeaky, the TV did not have much of a picture - but we loved it. The hotel has the feel of the jungles, its greenery is lush, the pool is warm and deserted (but as soon as you approach it a poolboy appears from nowehere and gives you a towel and a smile), the restaurant is open to the evening breeze and rainy smells and at least eight languages we heard at dinner (the food was good, too). The service was quick and friendly: we were taken to our room at once though it was barely 10 am. The place is also bird-friendly, and we loved hundreds of elegant white stork-like birds peacefully looking for something in the grass and then taking off in a fluffy storm and transforming the trees into snow-covered magnolias. The night is filled with peacock's honks and muffled thumps of the wild elephants walking around the barbed-wire fence. Who cares about the TV?

We spent two nights at this very comfortable hotel December 21st-23rd. The area was experiencing unusual torrential rain and flooding when we arrived to find the entrance drive and grounds ankle deep in water. We paddled with some trepidation to our accommodation which happily like the restaurant and lobby proved to be raised above the water level, and our beautifully designed bungalow complete with a fruit welcome pack quickly lifted our spirits. Furniture, tiled floors and bedding was all immaculate. The spacious ensuite bathroom included a deep bath and "outdoor" (open roofed) wet room with a great shower, fluffy white towels and plenty of hot water.
Paddling across to supper as crabs swam past our feet added to the fun of the occasion. The buffet offered a wide variety of dishes, and food was always well cooked and beautifully presented. There was a local band to serenade us as we ate one night.
Staff maintained smiles and endless good humour despite the challenges of the weather. The diligent electrician's attempts to keep the outdoor lights working in submerged conditions won our particular admiration. You will need transport to enjoy this rural location. The hotel is well placed for the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa if ancient sites are of interest. Our fancy was better met by a magnificent elephant safari and a blissful massage in nearby Habarana. We enjoyed our stay and I would recommend Kassapa Lions Rock as great value for money.

We celebrated Christmas here, the staff were very friendly. The work they put into the dinner was amazing, it was very impressive and tasted far better than roast turkey! Disco was rather odd, very old 50/60's only and not dancable, well the songs they chose! our teenagers didn't want to try:) As it rained the whole time we were there we were dogding the huge puddles and mud, this is why Sri Lanka is so green! brollies were provided. Rooms large and beds comfortable, rather dimly lit our torch was very handy. Open air shower and a bath was nice, double shower with the rain:) a little dated but okay. Used the pool which was large and would have been lovley with a bit of sun. Generally an okay place, apart from the pool the upstairs to the restaurant could be a good place for ping pong or pool for kids.
