“Hotel for nature lovers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

The hotel is located near to Elephant orphanage and in the banks of river where those elephants takes bath. The hotel is sorrounded by nature and it is a ideal hotel for nature lovers and families with child who loves elephants.

The hotel is nicely build and so amenities. Also the staff are good. It is a spectacular view to see a group of elephants taking bath from your hotel room. Only the hotel is bit costly for that remote area.

Room Tip: Ask for river side view rooms

Best view fow elephants bathing. They came to hotel for food so we bought some bananas for feed them One elephant climbed to hotel and handlier had to ask it to come down. Hotel basic , had trouble getting hot water in bath but you dont need it because it was so hot. Staff really good. They do not accept credit cards or will if you go to a nearby shop owned by them. Food excellent . View from hotel balcony amazing. Hotel on riverbank so lots of insects . Has some fireflies in room when we went to sleep. Wanted to stay had hotel longer but all the rooms were booked . Had to change money at hotel to pay bill but rate given was poor. Change money in private shops they gave a good rate.

The hotel is just upstream from where the elephants from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage come to the river each day. The elephants come right up to the river bank by the dining area, and there is no-one hassling you for money if you want to take pictures or touch an elephant. In fact the hotel staff told the mahoots off when they started asking for cash.

The hotel itself is right on the river bank and has an open air dining area. It seems to make most of its money from breakfasts and lunches for visitors to the orphanage, so it can get quite crowded at times. 150 for lunch on the day we arrived, and a larger wedding party the next day. There are only a few rooms, so the evenings were much quieter, and even at busy times the staff made sure the resident guests were looked after.

Elephant Bay does not seem to turn up on any of the main hotel booking sites, but the web site is clear and we had no trouble making a booking via email.

Food was excellent and reasonably priced. You would have to be pretty hungry to spend more than £10 on dinner. Staff were friendly and most spoke good English. Just as well, as my Sinhalese is very poor.

The only downside was that there had been a lot of rain the previous day and the river was high and very noisy. It made for a disturbed night . Once the river level had dropped there was no problem.

Ameneties are fairly sparse, but you go there for the scenery and the elephants. There is no swimming pool but when the river is low enough they will serve a floating breakfast while you sit in the water. Even with the rain the river is not especially deep, just brown and noisy. The elephants were wading about knee high in the middle of the river and some of the locals were swimming.

Hotel Elephant Bay offers great service, with value, offering B&B, half or full board. The chef created beautiful meals. The staff were extremely helpful, keen to serve. The location of the hotel makes it a little hard to find but it is on the bank of the river at which the elephants from the Orphanage come to bath. Rooms have TV, A/C, and fans, many with small balconies overlooking the river.
