“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

This was our second visit to Sri Lanka and our second stop at this hotel. Last time it was still under the Chaaya label (owned by the same group as the Cinnamon ones) and although we enjoyed it, had a good room and loved the location, there were some aspects of it that felt a wee bit lacking. On arriving this year we were blown away by the wonderful refurbishment that has taken place and lifted the hotel up the ranks quite substantially, Our room was comfortable, modern, stylish but not overly fussy, and we do enjoy those cosy little balconies overlooking the river. The lounge area has been rearranged and was very pleasant - we enjoyed a snack and a drink there as we'd not had lunch en route - and the restaurant has also been very effectively revamped. Food was very good indeed and service excellent. On the advice of Sri Lankan friends we made the trip up to Embekke Devale, which had our driver cringing, the road was so narrow and windy, even for him, but it was worthwhile. And we had to return to the fantastic Royal Botanical Gardens at Peredinya. Could spend days in there just meandering and enjoying the great plants and people watching. Were only there one afternoon and overnight and were rather wishing we'd been staying a bit longer!

Great location and decent sized rooms, we understand the hotel has been recently renovated. The open air public arears are fantastic.
The food was disappointing we made the mistake of eating in the poolside restaurant which we thought would be less formal for our family than the main restaurant. It lacked atmosphere and was overpriced, we didnt realise the main restaurant was buffet style (as are most hotels in Sri Lanka). The breakfast buffet looked wonderful but proved to be disappointing, I ordered poached eggs and was told to return in five minutes, on my return they had clearly forgotten, when they did finally appear they were inedible, having got my eggs I then had to wait for the chef cooks bacon idividually - frustrating when we had a fixed departure time.

Fantastic setting overlooking the river, beautiful gardens and pool. Food very good and plenty of choice. Stayed one night and would have loved to have stayed longer. I would definitely go back again if I was to visit Kandy.

The weather in Kandy wasn't great during our time there, but this hotel was. We had looked at a number of options, but definitely made the right choice. Good value for money. Also very good food at the resturants and an incredible breakfast buffet.
Nice resort with a great pool, fully recommend Cinnamon Kandy (as all other Cinnamon hotels that we stayed at during our 2-week Sri Lanka trip).

Amazing hotel, with a great pool in front of the trees and the river, my kids loved it. Our bedroom was spacious enough for our family of 4. And very clean. We had dinner in the pool restaurant, it was very tasty and they have a real dessert choice. Breakfast at the buffet is also very good, with many options, but like everywhere in Sri Lanka no proper orange juice, and the other juices are often too sugared.
The hotel is not far from Kandy so going to the city is very easy and quick.
The staff was very kind and helpful.

Room Tip: Family rooms are really spacious

We stayed at Cinnamon Citadel for only one night when we visited Kandy. I said 'only' because we would love to stay much longer: the view is good, the interior design exotic, food is fine (having come from Cinnamon Lodge where we stayed for two nights, we were spoiled by the latter's better food quality and variety, so could only say Cinnamon Citadel's F&B offer is fine). But what blew me off my feet were the little details the hotel put in for the comfort of their guests - there was even a digital bathroom scale and a loofah pad was available for a soothing bath.

Staff were polite but distant, though an old chef at the main restaurant tried to be too friendly to the extent of being touchy-feely.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay and would like to thank the hotel for upgrading us with no extra charge to a deluxe room when all the superior rooms were occupied.

This hotel offered a fantastic location for our three nights in Kandy.
It's views are great and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.
Rooms are very standard and modern and ours had a great view of the river. We ate dinner one night in the buffet which offered a huge selection of very good food - great Sri Lankan curries as well as other cuisines.
The pool area is very well maintained and it's only about 15/20 minutes into Kandy itself. If you want to be right in the centre of Kandy this might not be for you but it's only about 300/400 rupies (£3) tuc tuc into Kandy.
