“Secret and tranquil place in Kandy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

We were recommended Kandy Cottage by Sri Lankan friends. Hidden away off the main drag this is a lovely little bungalow set in its own garden and nestling up against the forest, but a short walk or Auto rickshaw drive into hectic and bustling Kandy. Cool and airy interior, nicely furnished and with mozzie nets. The staff were all exceptionally helpful and friendly. We enjoyed marvellous breakfasts; in particular the egg hoppers were delicious as were the freshly squeezed juices.
The traditional & generous rice and curry dinner we had was excellent with a good range of different curries including yummy fish and delicious beetroot. The only downside was that the bed in the Creative Space is perhaps not quite large enough for two and the private bathroom is not en suite, but the other large en suite rooms, with bigger beds, were already booked. Thanks again to Tobi, Thomas and Mani for making us so welcome here. This is really a very special place to stay. Steve & Celia

Room Tip: Avoid the Creative Space if you are a couple. Fine for one person.

We stayed at Kandy Cottage in July 2012. The cottage is situated up the hill above Kandy and feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of this busy town. It's walkable into Kandy, down the hill, but you'll need a Tuk Tuk to get you back uphill, especially in the afternoon/evening/nighttime. The rooms are very comfortable with skylights, mozzie nets and onsuite bathrooms. We hired the entire cottage so our two children had their own room and were very happy. The staff were wonderful and the food was exceptional. I liked the fact that our guide stood by while we ate as it meant that my daughter tried everything on her plate (at his insistence) and enjoyed delicious Sri Lankan food for the first time. The egg hoppers are an absolute must and the fish curry with potatoes, beetroot chutney and bringals on the side was magnificent. All in all, a very pleasant stay at Kandy Cottage. Thanks Tobi !

My apologies to the staff for the late relpy.
Let me just say that it was a much needed haven far away from city life. This is what I call a vacation: green forest around you, monkeys, squirrels, and many birds. The Staff are amazing, honest and ask them anything and they are more than willing to help. The chef is really great and the food is just amaaaaazing! and they are always generous in giving you more than you can actually need! Always available for a talk, advice, and always friendly, staff are just excellent. Weather is excellent, people around are helpul and friendly. I would defintely come here again when I need a getaway from the stress of city life. I will be adding photos very soon....

Our apologies to the management and staff for this delayed review. I was certain I posted it a while ago. My wife and I spent three nights in the Friendly Space (one of the three rooms at the Kandy Cottage) in late November 2012 and communications with Toby to secure bookings were efficient and friendly. Have no doubt that Thomas, the resident manager, will make your stay at this quaint, comfortable and secluded guest house a memorable experience. While only 10 minutes walk from the centre of Kandy and the Lake, Kandy Cottage is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the second largest city in Sri Lanka. Good food adds to the enjoyment. Thomas is great company and his information that Duncan White, a friend of my mother’s, lived in the cottage more than 70 years ago added an unexpected memento. Highly recommended.

pros
- had good sleeps on the hard bed
- very old historic building

cons
- the manager and two male staff are constantly around your room, walls are paper thin (i could hear other guests breathing) and the doors dont fully close meaning this place is not great if you are looking for privacy.
- tea! its good but its expensive (more than it costs at Colombo Hilton)
- location - fine if youre adventurous but tuktuks cosr 200 rupee which add up, up a steep hill with no lighting at night (i nearly fell down a ravine at one point)
- lighting, due to mosquitos the manager doesnt like to use lights in the main area which effects things like sight, movement, you will be pestered to 'turn things off' no one needs to hear that on holiday,

in short, if you are at deaths door this is the place for you.

and did i mention the 12000 rupee quote for one days car hire?

A homey, tiny, but truly authentic place to stay in Kandy. The staff and level of service is amazing. A non profit place, run with heart by Toby and his lovely people. This is a place with a tiny, local kitchen and the menu of the day is discussed each morning over traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.

We were a Danish family of 4, mom, dad, and our two girls ages 4 months and 3years and stayed there for 3 nights, and when we left, we forgot our game of scrabble. We rang the Cottage to check if it was there, and Toby offered to send it by convenient driver to the south coast of Sri Lanka - a 6 hour drive over mountains and tea valleys.

When we return to Sri Lanka, once the kids are a bit older, we definitely have to go back to our home in the jungle, The Kandy Cottage.

Hi Ole,

Your review is a pleasant surprise indeed almost 10 months after you stayed with us ;-) We still remember the pleasant times and conversations we shared with you. Your paintings were so inspirational, especially the one of Andre's looking on at your baby daughter. Unfortunately Andre is no more with us and we have a new Manager - Raghu Thomas - whose company you would have enjoyed too. Mani keeps on making his nice meals and the surrounding has been touched up a little bit. I must confess that we haven't sent all of your scrabble pieces as we've found some 'danish' pieces mixed up with our set ;-).
Thank you again for your 'excellent' review which will hopefully prompt others to consider making their way to Kandy Cottage and enjoying 'our way of life'.

On our way to the cottage our taxi driver informed us that both tobi and thomas were 200% honest. We were skeptical at first, as they organised the driver, however this was statement was affirmed by all of the great advice and service we were given. We stayed at Kandy Cottage for 3 nights from 19th Nov 2012. I was in communication with Tobi to book the trip prior to leaving Sydney and he was extremely helpful. The meals were great and the moonlight room was spacious and very comfortable. All of the suggestions provided by Thomas turned out to be right our only regret was that we did not listen to him more. The location of the cottage was less than a 10 minute walk from the centre of the town with thomas guiding us on our first night. It was a great escape that I would recommend to friends and family every day of the week.

Hi Brad C,

Thank you very much for all the nice things you've said about us and also for letting us know that you'll be conveying your pleasant experience at Kandy Cottage to friends & family. We eagerly await their arrival and also your return to beautiful Sri Lanka, historical Kandy and of course homely Kandy Cottage. Thomas and Mani had enjoyed your company as much as you seem to have enjoyed theirs. We wish you both 'Happy Travels'.
