Stayed a couple of nights prior to going on a 3 night trek in the Knuckles Range with the owners' staff. There was confusion about our dates so we ended up in a noisy room inside their apartment with a bug-infested bathroom. The owner's wife literally screamed at my wife and threatened to kick us out when we said we didn't need the breakfast. She calmed down once she had unloaded a lot of personal information.
We originally signed up for a 2 night trek, plus a 1 night visit to the local national park to see wild elephants. But the owner talked us into a 3 night crossing of the range, with a fourth night at the park. This was a mistake. The area is beautiful, but the hiking very demanding. Long, long distances and steep ground -- with torrential rain, bridges washed out, and innumerable leaches a given. Our guide was enthusiastic and a good birder. But he was unwilling to answer honestly our questions about what to expect ahead (distance, grade, etc.), and unwilling to take into consideration our concerns or preferences. Despite communicating our exhaustion and severe blisters we always seemed to end up going on the longer, more arduous path. The guides need to be taught to consult with their clients and be more flexible. If we had done a 1-2 night trip to their permanent camp on the Kandy side of the range we would have been happy. The camp is in a beautiful location, with friendly local staff and good food.
When we did finally get to the national park, we spent a few hours stuck in the mud after nightfall. The driver and guide did not arrange transportation at the park like the owner described, but tried to charge us even more for using their company vehicle. Then the park tried to charge us much, much more for the rescue and tow. We refused. The hotel that night was not clean.
Overall, the experience was exhausting. A beautiful area with impressive wildlife, but a very frustrating experience with the people involved. Most importantly, be wary of the owner! On two occasions he made very lewd remarks and inappropriately touched my wife. We were two stunned and tired to respond and just couldn't wait to get out of there. Spend your time and money elsewhere!
