“Totally relaxing, a hidden gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2010

You have to go and stay at this retreat!

We stayed for 3 nights at the start of our travels around the country and it was the best decision. The food was INCREDIBLE, all home grown produce cooked fresh. We spent our days wandering the 14 acres of land, reading down by the river and relaxing outside our room on the balcony with the MOST incredible views!!!

It is hidden away in the mountains of kandy and even though we went out of season and experienced the rain, it didnt matter because it is a truely magical and wonderful place.

The staff are incredible and we could have sat there and listened to waruna's tales and strories for hours! The cook is by far the best in Sri Lanka in our experience!

No TV, Music or noise....a total getaway! Oh and we had a 1 1/2 hour massage just as it was going dark over looking the river by candlelight....heaven!

Highly recommended!

A place to go to for calm and contemplation, if not meditation, not a base for sightseeing. Have a hut to yourself or your family and read and talk and wander, and swim in the rockpools of the river below - or walk up to the waterfall unless the rain has brought the leeches out.! The restaurant, lit by lamps burning coconut oil, serves delicious food, much of it grown on the spot. Ripe avocados amazing with treacle. And wildlife: brilliantly coloured birds and a chorus of frogs every evening.

I support most of the previous reviews; the place is absolutely charming, located in the middle of the jungle on the riverside. Very quiet. Family atmosphere at dinner place.

There are lodging businesses in which they get the profit and you get what you ask for, and then there are personal projects in which money is an obviously important component, but the reward of fulfilling the personal dreams and life of its owners is the main force behind its development, and the most important reason for their very existence. Samadhi Centre is an unique and rare example of the latter.

Let's try to summarize:
- You are very open-minded and enjoy diversity
- You are not very afraid of bugs/wildlife
- You don't have restrictions in your mobility
- You appreciate nature and enjoy being surrounded by it
- You are looking forward to really rest your soul and senses, and would like to face yourself for some days
- You like natural and traditional cooking and are willing to try different things
- You appreciate the beauty of simplicity
- You like finding like-minded people and sharing your experiences with them (this is of course something you can also avoid)
- You can afford Samadhi's rates

The more boxes you tick, the more you will enjoy the Samadhi Centre. If you tick all of them, then look no further: this will surely feel like one of the more luxurious places you can ever go to. And I mean TRUE luxury and exclusivity, not the sort of luxury advertised in 5 star hotels.

You should absolutely stay away of Samadhi if:
- You don't tick any of the first 3 boxes
- You travel with non-open minded children/partners
- Your ideal of a proper vacation is to pamper in a 5-star hotel or resort for a few days
- You don't have at least 2/3 days to enjoy Samadhi

I went with my partner during low season (April), and the place was rather quiet, with just a few hosts. High season (around Christmas) can get crowded, but I cannot say whether it becomes unpleasant or not. I doubt it loses any of its charm anyway, but keep that it mind if you absolutely want to avoid contact with other people (even if like-minded :)

An aboslute gem

Additional tips: if you come to Samadhi by car, make sure your driver understands that it is a 30-40 minutes drive from Kandy, before planning the whole journey. Try to not to arrive at night, and mind that the road is EXTREMELY bumpy because of the rainfall during the wet season (but you might not want to inform your driver about this)

I must admit that we did not immediately appreciated what a special and beautiful place Samadhi Centre is, when we arrived at the end of a long rainy day of travel. But after we walked around the grounds, saw how the place blends in naturally with the surrounding jungle and settled down in the reception area with its antique furniture, we realized this is a remarkable place. Samadhi Centre is not for everyone, but if you are looking for a few days of peace and quiet to reflect on life and anything it may bring you, this is the place.
The setting is beautiful, the rooms may be basic yet stylishly furnished with antiques, comfortable and clean, and the original Sri Lankan food is great. At night, when the entire place is lit with traditional oillamps, the atmosphere is magical. Amazingly not a single mosquito around!
The owner Waruna, his wife Yumi and the staff really succeded in making us feel at home and arranged massages, yoga sessions and hikes through the jungle to a nearby waterfall. And if you have time, visit Warunas antique shop in Kandy: he has beautiful things!

We have been returning to Samadhi year after year and never fail to enjoy ourselves. As you enter the property you really enter an enchanted world and its very hard t remember the normal life. We always wind up delaying our departure to swim again in the perfect rivers and enjoy another meal and explore another corner of Samadhi.

If you are looking for modern amenities and fast life this is definitely not the place for you. But if you want to totally relax in bounteous nature and leave your cares behind you, Samadhi is ideal. Accommodation is basic but very charming and eclectic. Old pillars, stairs, oil lamps, doors and other fabulous architectural salvage and antiques have been masterfully and sympathetically recycled to give one the feeling one is in an ancient Singhalese settlement.

spent three nights here between Xmas and New Year 09 and loved it. Highlights were the instructed meditation and yoga sessions, watching the sun come up and seeing the Knuckles range from the wide balcony. It rained the first day and had been raining for the previous three days. This is usual as the dry season starts Jan - May and it does mean the bedrooms and beds are really quite damp. Once we had a couple of dry days this improved. The noise of the jungle also takes some getting used to as well as the darkness. They light the path from the rooms to where you have your food with oil lamps . It is amazing how loud it can be, especially with the river as well which runs below the place. The place itself is divine. The food is wonderful, fresh and all cooked on an open woodfire. The drive is 45 mins from Kandy and pretty rough as already mentioned. There is a small temple a steepish 20 mins walk away uphill. Rooms 10-11 have the best view, even though the bedrooms are smaller than 13. To be recommended. The manager is also really great and you get to chat to the owners 78 yr old uncle who lives there following a stroke. He is always around for breakfast and lunch. Do try it.
