Castle Hill is a perfect little Gem. It is a small guest house in Sri Lanka, not a 5 star in New York. Original Art Deco right through, hardly touched since built. Massive gardens. Brilliant views of Kandy, even better at night. Occasional monkeys running on roof. Very quiet location compared to rest of town. 5 minutes of sausage dog barking every evening. 4 very large rooms. Owner was reserved and quiet on first impression, but she turned out to be most helpful and friendly after sitting down to a cup of tea and a chat. It seems that Sri Lankans are very genuine, so if you spend the time to be yourself, give people the time of day, and don't expect anything, then you might get something that you don't expect. Be demanding or rude and then good luck to you. Housekeeping generally was unobtrusive, good, but not perfect. If something is amiss it is no drama, just ask and it will be fixed immediately. They were embarrased about any shortcomings. Our housekeeper was a salt of the earth lady, worked hard, and deserved all of her tips. Meals during our stay were of an excellent standard, especially considering the price. There was a standard menu for evening meal, but the owner took the effort to ask us during the day what we would like for that meal. If it was not on the menu, but could be bought locally, then they would go out and just buy whatever you wanted for your meal. All in all, excellent value to stay in a pretty unique place.
