“Scary elevator.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2011

Main thing is this hotel is near to the Kandy Lake Club with its nightly cultural performances as well as Buddha's tooth. Our room had a great view of the hills and the river. Avoid the rooms near the pool as it can get noisy and people walk by to go to the restaurant.

Restaurant was nothing special save for the dozen monkeys who run on the roof which was kinda cool.

Overall, this is an okay place, save the rooms were mostly old and the elevator probably should be in a museum instead of a hotel. (It bangs when you reach your floor)

We spent one night here on our tour of Sri Lanka. The hotel was well situated with a short walk down to the temple. After the cutural show in town we braved a slightly chilly pool just to experience swimming with a view over Kandy and the White Buddah, stunning.
The room was very large, with the usual slighly under par bathroom. No hairdryer and no fridge. Air con worked fine and tv had one channel working.
We had dinner and breakfast. Both very good quality, some of the best of our trip.
I love the way the hotel feels like it has been there forever, although we were told it was built in the 80's. (Maybe it was the 1880's, I didn't think of that!)
Good hotel for a city break.

The hotel is about 3km from kandy city therefore it was convienient to travel around and also to be away from the busy city, the rooms were well equipped and the staff were attentive. We found Kandy weather cool and nice. Please beware of the monkeys, do not feed them as the hotel has advised and make sure the doors are closed when they are around. It was a good stay at Thilanka.

Went there on office trip, reasonable clean rooms for the price we paid. The food was great. The environment quiet and clean.

We stayed at Thilanka for 2 nights on halfboard basis. Pros- The breakfast and dinner was good with lots of choices, the view is superb (we had a room at the corner of the building and balcony overlooking the Kandy lake) since it was raining we could not use the pool facilities. The rooms are huge. Service was OK.
Cons- The bathtub was rusted, the walls had patches on them due to water leakage, the lifts is one cranky piece. No internet in the rooms and the only way you could access is by using your laptop in the reception, where they have an extra cable for connectivity.

We only stayed one night of our 4 nights booked. I have stayed at Thilanka twice before in years past but standards have slipped dramatically in the intervening years. Maintenance is the main problem - rusting railings, dirty walls, mottled ceilings, gaping holes in the woodwork - these are all things that might be easily fixed but they were bad enough that we wanted to leave immediately. I should add that the hotel is in a superb setting and has the potential to be outstanding (and indeed it used to be) but it seems to have fallen into some disrepair.

Some suggestions:

1. Some landscaping for the concrete slab terrace most of the rooms look out onto. A garden/seating area perhaps? As it is, the grubby, puddled waste-of-space is something of an eyesore.
2. Wireless connectivity - The computer had 1 computer in a little room beside the front desk that did not work. Not good enough.
3. Maintenance, maintenance, MAINTENANCE.

I would love for this place to turn it around as it was a favourite and could be again.

I have stayed here many times as I live in Sri lanka but have never put a report in before. This hotel gets mixed reviews but when you look most in Kandy do. Its all about expectation. For the money and location his hotel is the best option. I have looked at the smaller places like Sharron Inn, Freedom Lodge etc and found them to be clean but very basic. Thilanka has maybe 5 options for rooms so if someone organises it for you make sure they are getting the good rooms. The top floor has good rooms with fantastic views and are not overlooked and so you can leave the curtains open. The food is as good as anywhere in kandy including the expensive resorts. This hotel is more than adequate for touring base and as i live here i go for a 2 or 3 night break just for relaxing and a bit of urban buzz as the lonely Planet says! I love Kandy and never tire of visiting it. If I stay 3 nights though i will take one night for a meal and helgas folly is well worth a dinner out just for the experience! The woodpecker bar is a bit dark and lifeless but it is a bar and I can enjoy a nightcap there. I have heard the hotel is to be refurbished which would be great for the old rooms but will the price soar?
