The Thilanka has a great position and the view of Kandy is magnificiaent. The dining room is clean and modern with art on the walls. The food is good and varied. The bar is comfortable, good service, you can get a decent plate of chips (if yoyu don't fancy a proper meal) and the beers are good too.
The only down side is the upper floor. The ground floor has beautiful suites, on the second the floor is painted red and is less attractive with smaller rooms. The top floor is reached by a concrete stair and the corridors are used for storage. It strikes me that these would normally be the staff quarters. The rooms are small and basic with no wardrobe space. (Our room was 408). Saying that we were only there for an overnight stay so it was no problem. The added parade of monkeys in the morning was fun :-)
I'd say a good base for travelling in the area though a bit far from the main shops.
