“Fantastic colonial hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

The hotel is in the best location in Kandy and as soon as you walk through the doors the place is stunning! The old colonial style is fantastic, the rooms are basic but have everything you need and were very comfortable. The bar and swimming pool were very good for relaxing and the buffet breakfast had fantastic choice.
The rooms facing the temple are noisy, with prayers being called at 6am and then the horns start on the road, but this is only a minor negative.
This hotel is a must, even if you're not staying here you should visit as the decor is amazing.

This hotel definitely has character and history, but it has seen better days.

The family room was large with beds in 2 different rooms. The beds were large and fairly comfortable. The bathroom was large, but the hot water supply was variable.

It is worth noting that our suitcase was placed by staff beside the bathroom, and water leaked from the bathroom shower onto the bag.

The room was very as we could hear chanting from the Temple of the Tooth and vehicles from the road.

Breakfast was disappointing.

Worth considering for its history and character, and it could not be much closer to Kandy's major sights.

This must be everyones idea of an original Colonial Hotel. Only stayed one night but would recommend the hotel purely based on location.
The hotel itself was clean, staff were pleasant, helpfull and reception efficient.
Rooms had very high ceilings and wooden floors, stunning interior.
One unique experience was being woken in the early hours by the Buddhist Monks early morning chanting!

We stayed at this hotel for a day on 22-Dec-2012. Early checkin (around 7am) was no issue with the hotel. Breakfast timings are till 10am. Its better to come early for breakfast else you would get the leftovers. Choose this hotel if your priority is its central location. We got a pool facing room which was nice but our room had a door connecting the neighbouring room so we could hear almost all the talks going on in the adjacent room that includes the cough sound, phone ring sound and once I ended up opening my room door while there was a knock on some other door. One more thing , if possible buy a bottle of water from outside as the small one's in the room would cost you around 110Lankan rupees

The staff are really friendly and the decor is very fitting for the hotel name. Great stay ! The entrance had a lovely Christmas display and carols playing. The room had all modern conveniences. It's close to the temple so you get the chanting early in the morning. The bar area is calm and soothing.

Stayed here for four nights on business early in December. The staff could not have been more helpful, whether front of house, restaurant or domestic staff. We ate almost all meals at the hotel during our stay - appreciated the a la carte as an alternative to the buffet.

Rooms were large, but could do with some re-furnishing, especially given the room price.

Good wi-fi internet and very central location. Rooms away from the road were very quiet. Would happily recommend but don't expect 'modern'!

Having phoned a reservation the night before, we were a bit fazed on arrival to find it could not be found; after a long wait, a room was found; the first night had to be paid for upfront - did we look that disreputable?

The room was a spacious double, well equipped, but like most rooms here, facing a main road. 5.30am, tape recording of chants from the temple opposite, followed by the awakening of thousands of crows which had roosted in the trees lining the avenue.

But, these points aside, the hotel is superb. Excellent location, overlooking the lake, in the heart of the city, with shopping and tourist venues at hand; superb building - lobby (with evening pianist), wide mahogony staircases, lift, polite room service. And what a breakfast! Superb choice of omelette bar, Western, Sri Lankan, fresh fruit, bread goods.

Pool, bar, shopping facilities.

Just a pity that the administration left something to be desired!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not overlook a main road
