We stayed few days in Kandy during the Esala Perahera in August. First night was at the Freedom Lodge, a place strongly recommended by Lonely Planet and to be honest this "Guest House" should even not be mentionned in the guide. Noisy, dirty shower, hard bed, and a buffet like in a refectory, not to mention the amazing festival surchage of nearly 30 dollar on top of the normal price. We quickly moved to Vino Villa recommended by a fellow backpacker and it couldn't have been better. This brand new hotel idealy situated south of Kandy Lake in a residential area is 10 mn walk from the Tooth Temple. It meets Occidental Standard which is quite rare in Sri Lanka : thick and confortable bed, spotless bathroom, AC, TV, extemely quiet, not to mention the amazing service that the manager, Darshana is giving to the guest. Darshana has been trained in European 4 stars hotel and is knows what service means. Forget previous negative comments, we came in when a group of 14 people from Saudi Arabia were indeed leaving cause of all the trouble they have created. The staff had to repaint the 3 rooms these people have occupied and fix what they have broken. Darshana handled the situation with great patience and courtesy. Vino Villa is one the nicest place we have stayed during our one month traval in Sri Lanka and I strongly recommend it.
All rooms have a balcony overlooking a nice property.
