“A great place specially fr Tourists in kandy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

We went to Kandy as part of our holiday tour to Sri Lanka. We stayed in hotel Susse in Kandy. We booked the Colombo-bentota-kandy trip through Srilankatravelhouse.com.com just looking the location of the hotel and we got the fare deal. It takes us 3 hours to reach the hotel from Colombo which was our first destination.
The hotel is located at a walking distance from Kandy Lake and cradled between the two well- weeded mountain ranges. It is few minute walk to the city centre and other tourist places from the hotel Susse. We visited the temple of the scared tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha, the Archeological Museum, the Kandyan Arts and Crafts Association. We clicked some memorable photographs of all these places.
On reaching the hotel we received very warm welcome by the hotel staff and were accompanied to our rooms. We stayed in the room facing the Kandy Lake. The view from the room was absolutely fantastic. A range of modern amenities were offered in the room including Air conditioning, hot and cold water and attached bathroom. Bathroom had modern fitting and spotlessly clean. 24 hour room service was available. Laundry facility was also available and that too was on reasonable prices.
The hotel also offers an outdoor swimming pool which is very hygienic. There were no surplus charges for using the swimming pool. Daily we enjoyed 1 hour swimming which was the only way to get away through the high temperature. There is also an ayurvedic centre where you can have ayurvedic massage therapy.
We enjoyed the charm and elegantly served breakfast and dinner buffet. Food was delicious in the traditional restaurant offering a range of cuisine from European to vegetarian dishes.
Those three days which we spent in Hotel Susse were the most amazing days. We really enjoyed the place and like the hospitality offered by the hotel. We will definitely stay in this hotel only whenever we will visit Kandy.

Stayed at the hotel for one night when we visited the Kandy and Tooth Relic Palace. Hotel's location is great, away from the Kandy's hectic traffic but not to far from all the attractions. Rooms are cleaned, perfect service from the staff and delicious food to much. We cannot fault it.

Room Tip: with the lake view

We stayed at the hotel this past weekend which was low season though the hotel was still very busy. On one night there was two bus loads of tourists from India which stretched the staff.

The hotel is a lovely colonial building with much history and character. As long as guests don't go there expecting modern standards from Australia, Europe, America they won't be disappointed. This property is old with the facilities of the period - red polished concrete floors, large rooms with particularly high ceilings, paned windows with the old brass latches. The showers are over the bath tub with a shower curtain. (This may pose a problem for older, infirm or handicapped guests).
The ballroom doubles as both a dining room and a function centre with the old fashioned viewing balcony above. One night when a function was held the dining room was set up in an adjoining room. Set up was professional and the function set up was to an international standard.

Food - breakfasts were adequate. Dinner was buffet style, well presented and reasonably priced. Unfortunately both of us became ill during the night after eating only in the hotel. My husband was very sick with food poisoning for three days whilst I had only mild symptoms and another guest also was affected. After this I ordered room service as my husband was too sick to eat - the food was sent quickly and was good.

Hotel was in good proximity to everything. Accommodation was provided for the driver which is important for foreign tourists. The service varied - some staff were very good and professional whilst others appeared to be disinterested and effectively create a bad impression.

Overall this is a good, comfortable and clean colonial hotel of plus three star standard which will not disappoint you if you are there to enjoy an historical colonial experience of yesteryear. Price is reasonable.

Having seen some of the pics i think that we had one of the better rooms but I loved this hotel. The old colonial style is absolutely beautiful. It has an adequate pool and pleasant dining room but I think the best things are the beautiful old ball room and mirrored bar and terrace on which to enjoy an evening drink imagining yourself reliving the days of the raj.
Lovely beds and decor too.

We decided to stay at this hotel after looking at a few of the hotels in Kandy.

The hotel itself is average, you can imagine at some point in time that this was a classy hotel, but now a little average and slightly run down - it has a sort of old gymnasium feel to it.

The rooms are quite nice, very spacious, with great views of the lake. the bathroom again to a decent standard but the bath tub seemed very old with a bit of a DIY paint Job to cover up some areas where the bath tub had rusted.

The location is good, right by the lake, the tooth relic temple and close to town. The Kandy city centre is a short 15 minute walk away. If you are walking into town at night, there is a real lack street lighting around the hotel as in much of Sri Lanka, making the walk into town feel eerie at first, but we found the area safe enough.

Breakfast and dinner were average, all buffet style no offer of an a la carte menu.

Staff and service were average, however the restaurant staff were the friendliest staff of the hotel.

If you stay here, you might want to check they don't have any weddings booked in for the duration of your stay - Sri Lankan weddings in this part of the country start very early in the morning, so it's likely you will be woken by the sound of drums and chanting/singing!

Room Tip: Choose a room furthest away from from the main hall to keep noise disturbance to a minimum.

It's refreshing to see that Sri Lanka is able to maintain a hospitality standard of days gone by. A few well known hotels in Sri Lanka try to achieve the same, but not as good as Hotel Suisse.....and for half the price!
The rooms and public areas are spacious and adequately maintained. the staff are great and food is very acceptable. Located within 10 min walk to town, it's convenient and the pool is available to cool down. Try a massage...definitely the best I've had in SL. Enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: Although they can be noisy, I suggest you request for room nos 221-225...nice and close to the bar...

Another wonderful old Hotel set above the Lake in Kandy. Excellent service, rooms, meals, DJ and staff. Highly recommended because of its location and proximity to be able to access the city, Temple of the Tooth. Being able to witness a wedding was something of a bonus and have it explained to us as to what was happening and why.
