“Friendly and great value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We went here for on our last night in Kandy-how I wish we had found it 3 days earlier. We got 2 dosas, some dips and various other little snacks for only a few pounds. They were happy to wrap the food up to take away, complete with banana leaf to eat off! And we spent the last night of our trip eating out lovely vege food on our hotel balcony-what more could you want?!

“The only vegetarian restaurant in Kandy that I found”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This place serves decent vegetarian food, and the price is unbeatable. I may be repeating what another reviewer said, but that's what's true.

This hotel is not too jazzy or flashy. In fact, it is very very basic. However, they do cook up some good food. They make dosas that are closest to authentic south Indian dosas that you can get in this place of the country.

Give them a visit if you're in Kandy, and do it definitely if you're a vegetarian.

“Best Dosa in Town and Amazing Rice & Curry”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

Having spent 2 months in Kandy, and having tried nearly everywhere there is to eat, I can safely say this is one of the 2 best restaurants on all of Kandy. And the price is definitely unbeatable.

Yes, the interior doesn't look that great at the moment, but the quality and the taste of the food more than makes up for it. Oh, and it is all served on a large banana leaf!

For breakfast, there is traditional Sri Lankan stringhoppers which comes with a very tasty gravy. You need to get there fairly early to have this, as it's usually all gone by around 9:30 a.m.

For lunch, there is traditional Sri Lankan rice & curry, which varies daily. Basically you get your rice, and four different curries served with it, as well as papad (poppadom). On Friday there is a special rice & curry which includes amongst other things an amazing chutney made from curry leaf, you really have to try experience it. They generally serve both white and red rice (red being slightly healthier) and on Friday's they also have biryani. Also on Friday is the addition of a dessert, which is usually payasam. Finally, as with all other places that serve rice & curry, you can eat as much as you like, they'll come round and keep serving you until you're full. Price is 120-130 rupees depending on the day.

Throughout the whole day they serve dosas and idlis, and not only are they the best dosas in town, they're better than the majority of places I had dosas at in the north of India. (Yes, dosas are South Indian, but outside of Delhi I never once had a great one, and even in Delhi there were only a few places that did good dosas.) Now a word on the masala dosa: the filling is rather spicy, far spicer than the Indian masala dosas I've had. It is nonetheless very tasty, but just be aware of the spiciness. What I would strongly recommend is either the paper dosa or the ghee dosa, both quite large, but they are amazing here. I personally prefer my dosas to be crispy, and that's exactly what you get with these two. You can of course also order an ordinary dosa, which is slightly thicker and more like a plain uttapam, and you can also ask for onion dosa or onion/onion+tomato uttapam. Idlis are also really nice here, fluffy-ish as they should be, and again much better than all idlis I've tried in the north of India. And the best part of all is that the sambar and the chutneys are incredibly tasty. On the chutney front, the green one is slightly milder, and there are two red ones, both delicious, but a lot spicier.

The owners are very friendly and very accomodating: I requested a lot of things not on the menu, and they happily acquiesced with all of my requests. One thing I recommend is a paper dosa with onions and black pepper, this was one of the best things I had there. Oh and the staff are very nice as well.

The only thing going against this place is that the interior doesn't look that great by any stretch of the imagination. But the food is hygienic - unlike a few other places in Kandy - I've eaten there many times and have never once suffered as a result.

Definitely a must-visit when in Kandy, especially if you want to try an incredible Sri Lankan rice & curry, or if you love dosas and idlis.
