Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

“Worth visiting but very busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

The day we visited the temple was very busy and we had to wait some time to see the Tooth Relic casket which we only caught a glimpse of however others we talked to had experienced no waiting so perhaps it was the time of day we visited. Well worth the visit and a shrine visited by many Sri Lankans. The whole site is very well kept and there was an interesting display showing the history of the tooth relic and another room where there was the history of a famous Sri Lankian elephant.

“Humbling!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

always worth a visit to culturally enlighten oneself. But crowds pushing when the door to the dome opens is a bit off putting. Dont queue up and pay to view it , waste of time as you will be pushed along so fast that you will feel cheated! instead go past the queue and view from afar and zoom in with your camera to get a closer look! Respect the pilgrims and people who have come to offer their prayers and wishes!

“Full of people, flowers and culture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Not that you have to go every temple in town but this one is such an important part of Sri Lanka's history that you should visit it. Having a guide helps one to interpret all the art work and sculpture and the religious and cultural meaning of the experience. A dense and intense experience.

“Crowded but significant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

We went in the evening and was told by our guide that the viewing of the tooth relic is only for a short period of time, so we need to hurry. Need to be covered above knees and there is quite strict security check with separate lines for male and female. Extremely crowded and a lot of people in line. Took the line which allows closer viewing which had about a 20 minute wait. Single-file and fast moving once the viewing starts. So many people that l became quite worried that there may be a stampede. Then we visited another Buddha statute in one smaller room. Quite a couple more things to look at but we were just too tired from the crowd.

“Crowded place with not much to see”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

There are just couple of small rooms with not much to see. Not even a tooth. It was so overcrowded when we were there that long line of people was going like a snake through rooms. I think it is overrated.
