Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

“Underwhelming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013 via mobile

Large grounds are lovely to walk around. Museums give some interesting history. However the main attraction is a big let down. The tooth is locked away behind walls, so you essentially paying to be squashed through a temple with a herd if local worshippers.
Throughout Sri Lanka, tourists are forced to pay x4, x5 more than locals. And when you have a family these prices certainly add up.

“Another temple.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We can appreciate that the followers find this temple a worthwhile experience, but it didn't do much for us. We were kidnapped by a self-appointed guide who at the end of the tour wanted payment at four times the going rate. This is after paying twenty times higher entrance fee as a tourist compared to the locals.

“Very busy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Very busy when we visited in the evening. No different to many other Buddhist temples that we have visited to our untrained (in terms of Buddhism) eyes.

We had to walk outdoors barefoot which we were not warned about which did cause my wife some concern as she is diabetic. Accept that in the temple it is barefoot which we knew.

“early morning experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

although the shrine of the sacred tooth might be closed earlier in the morning - the atmosphere in the temple is aboslutely sacred and stunning, there is something very special about this place, I did hang out with the locals to meditate and that was a real special experience
