“Not worth the money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2010

Although this hotel is built into a cliff and looks impressive, the hotel is average and overpriced. We paid a lot of money to stay here and it was a buffet dinner where the food was average. I actually got food posioning from the restaurant. The spa treatment was also below par. The pool area is nice and the location is good but this is really not a five star hotel, even though they list it as one.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2010

Our family stayed at the Earl’s Regency in Kandy for 2 days. We had written confirmation for the reservation of a suite that would accommodate a family of four. When I saw the room, I was very disappointed. The usable portion of the “suite” consisted of a regular size room with the beds, minimal furniture, TV, and a bathroom with bath tub and separate shower. Adjoining this section was an equally-sized space which was basically an extension of the rocky terrain outside the building: essentially, the floor of this other half of the “suite” was a steeply sloping rock. It wouldn’t be true to say that this part of the suite was completely useless, because there was a bath tub with jets near the room entrance far away from the window; so if you decided to use this bath tub instead of the one in the bathroom, you’d have a view of the livable part of the room and the not very child-friendly chunk of natural rock. The rock seeped water (a mini spring?) during the night which was interesting. When we first saw the room I enquired whether it was a suite, and I was reassured that it was.

Besides, despite the fact that the hotel’s own confirmation stated that they were expecting four people, there were enough beds for only 3 people. The bathroom amenities were also prepared for three guests only. By the time another bed had been placed in the room, we had to move the only small table in the room onto the small balcony, and negotiate the rocky terrain in the other half of the room to get around our “suite”. As we were tired and had plans for that evening, I had neither the time nor the energy to complain and relocate. Two days later, when we were checking out at 10:15 a.m., I asked politely to speak to the duty manager to let him know how a guest might feel about that room if they’ve booked and paid for a suite. I was told that he was not available as he was having breakfast. So I thought I might drop him a line here at Tripadvisor and give him my feedback that way. I hope he won’t mind that there will be thousands of others now reading this.

Despite being crammed in our rather tired looking and faded accommodation, the room eventually had almost all the basics we needed and was quite clean. It also had quite a pleasant view, but you'd have no feeling of privacy on your balcony as you re right next to your neighbour's with no partition. However, ther was considerable noise from the long corridor outside very early in the morning, both from guests and the hotel staff and thir equipment.

On another occasion I asked one of the front desk staff (no concierge) whether in Kandy one could find an art gallery of pictures and paintings for sale. He huddled together with 2 of his front desk colleagues, and after some deliberation they said that nobody knew. Their advice was to ask our driver! The pool staff were rather curt; but the pool itself was quite good, both for those who want to do lengths, and those who just want to splash about.

Finally though, I would like to thank almost all the other very friendly staff at the hotel who do try and be helpful and provide good service. The dinners and breakfasts were of high quality (including the hotel-made breads and pastries); and although the restaurant service lacked five-star professionalism, this was compensated by the smiles and real enthusiasm of the serving staff and the restaurant managers who do try and do their best for their guests and correct earlier errors.

We arrived in the middle of the afternoon and had the usual reception with a fruit drink and a cold towel.

The room was OK, but the balcony did not offer you any privacy, as you only have a few feet to your neighbours on both sides.

We had the buffet in the evening and were pleasantly surpriced. It was very good.

The breakfast was acceptable and all in all, we had a nice stay at the Earls Regency.

Location
Impressive location near Kandy overlooking the lake.

Overall Impression
Nothing particularly differentiates this hotel from a million others. Upkeep and overall maintenance of the hotel appeared good

Room
The room was ok, relatively clean and with a view.

Food
We stayed on half board, which means buffet every night. The buffet was adequate but nothing really stands out to distinguish it form all the other buffet's we had during our stay

Service
Overall service was good, nothing particularly stands out.

rooms very nice, but do bring your own pillows as they and bedding very cheap low quality. As with all the hotels in this group penny pinching is the mantra higest profit from as much cash as the tourists will part from. In a couple of years the mismanagement of the asset will reflect the other properties, but for now enjoy the room views, little balconies each room has, and if you get a chance check out teh suites with the jacaoozis in the bedrock. Little light on staff for what should be a 5 star building but run as a 3 star.
(made the mistake of originally booking the sister hotel- Hilltop Hotel, cockroach mosquito ridden flea pit)

A great hotel, recommended to us by a friend. The food was great but the rooms for a 5 star hotel were not up to standard. A little picky but if you are paying then you want 5 star. No safe in the room, had to ring down for hand towels. Tea and coffee making facilities good but not 5 star, and only 1 small bottle of water per person per day. There are no other 5 star hotels in this region but there are others with charm.
