“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

This was the second hotel on our tour of 7 nights, we stayed for 2 nights and thought it was lovely. The room was huge, and the bathroom more than adequate, though I must admit the towels and face cloths were a bit thin. The public areas were very clean, and the staff in all areas were helpful. The pool and surrounding areas looked very nice but we did not have the opportunity to use it, more the pity. The buffet meals I thought were very average, and like all buffets the food was never very hot, though my husband did have a very nice chicken curry on our first night. The wine and alcoholic drinks were all quite expensive, but local beer and spirits were less expensive, and tasted OK. Overall this was the best room in our 2 week holiday, and I am surprised that some people have stated that the rooms are tired (maybe some have been renovated) because ours was great, and I really cannot understand the negative reviews. Though I must admit to one negative and that was being woken each morning at about 5 am by the call to prayer which seemed to last forever, though this was not a fault of the hotel, just the unfortunate location of the mosque I guess.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river if possible

Arrived at Mahaweli after a long drive and without any pre-booking. The front desk staff was really nice and helpful.
The suite is large and spacious. With a study, living area with a couple of sofas that look tired, flat screen, and a balcony with a lovely view of the river.
The kingsize bed is really comfy and there is a second flat screen tv.
The bathroom on the contrary, was the only thing we found that was worthy of 5 stars: looked brand new and really lovely, we loved the shower: multiple shower heads shooting at you at the same time, it was very cool. The jacuzzi and everything else was perfect as well.
But the walls are way too thin. you can hear everything that is going on in the corridor and in the room next to you.
Food: the food was average, nothing impressive.

A large hotel and the suite we stayed in was very tired. Old fashioned shower and the rugs could do with a big clean and the sofas sunk and were uncomfortable to sit in. There is a new block which apparently has modern showers etc. in. Those guests staying in the large block were all woken at 4.30am for call to prayers. The internet which costs 20 dollars a day was very intermittent. The food very average. No fresh juice for breakfast although lots of fresh fruit to eat.

If you're looking for a clean, quiet, comfortable hotel in Kandy, Mahaweli Reach will suit your purpose. If you're looking for five-star pampering and comfort, keep your expectations low.

The hotel was obviously a true luxury hotel in its day, but the rooms are now very dated. There are no specific short-comings, but it is time to put in some work. For example, the bathrooms have louvered windows straight out into the hall.

The location is fairly close to the Kandy town centre. It is set on a riverbank, which creates a nice setting for drinks or dinner. However, access to the river is limited. There is a short landing where you can sit out, but no access to any long walking or hiking paths. The area is very quiet at night.

The pool and surrounding lounging area is very attractive.

We were well treated by the staff. Check-in and out was smooth and easy.

The breakfast buffet was very good. The dinner buffet looked good, but we ordered a la carte, which was a mistake. The restaurant staff are not well-trained in dinner service. In fact, they would give Basil Fawlty a run for his money. I suggest sticking with the buffet.

We reached Mahaweli after about 8 hrs drive... the hotel staff was extremely nice and warm and our check in was smooth and quite speedy... and everyone made our stay very comfortable.
The rooms were quite old.. and seems that renovation had not been done in recent past.
The food was very good... both for dining at restaurant and in room dining..
We had a comfortable stay ... but the rooms can be done up better!

We had reached Mahaveli after a 4 hour flight, a visit to the pinnewala orphanage and about 6 hours on the road- and that too with a 2 year old toddler and a 3 month old infant. So we were utterly exhausted. But we were made to feel at home by the staff who greeted us with a chilled drink and wet towels. The check in was smooth- did not take more than 10 minutes. We were then escorted into our rooms by two beautifully dressed women who quickly explained all that we needed to know about the room and hotel. The room itself was beautifully set. The breakfast was decent although the staff could have been a bit more courteous. The pool looked beautiful but it wasn't temperature controlled so it was too cold for us for a dip in the evening. And while we were checking out the staff were extremely helpful and gave us a list of good places to visit from their personal file. All in all it was one of the best hotels I have stayed in.

Room Tip: Chose a pool view

Located a short distance from Kandy and beside a river this is a wonderful hotel. Check-in is done in the lounge and done with the least amount of fuss. The pool is the centerpiece of this hotel and it is one of the best pools I have ever been in. Our room was very quiet although only meters of the pool. Breakfast was extensive and wonderful. The Restaurant Manager was very helpful and was able to see to all our dining needs.

Room Tip: Rooms near the river offer a great view and most have a balcony.
