“best option for Kandy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

The name of the guesthouse is not just a name- it is the description of the people living and owning this guesthouse. We only stayed for 1 night here and regreted we only allocated one day for Kandy.
The experience in this HOME is incredible. You have the opportunity to meet people who are commited to make your visit unique. They are so kind and so nice that after 5 months from our trip we are still emailing with Mrs Kumary. She is the kind of person you would like to meet everyday and the people in the house are alike. The place is very clean and the food is great. If you have the opportunity to visit Kandy, don’t look anymore for other accommodation- Madugalle Friendly Guesthouse is the best option you have.

Kumari and her husband, along with their team of helpers run a lovely and cosy guesthouse very centrally located in the town of Kandy. When you enter you are met with a friendly welcome, a cool drink and a calming old-world atmosphere that comes from Kumari's family and past generations having lived in this home for the last 200 years as she told us.

The room itself is very simple and could use a couple of extra bits of furniture, but it was clean and we only used it for sleeping and showering anyway.

The meals were proper home cooked affairs with a real taste of Sri Lankan cuisine using a lot of organic produce. I might suggest a bit more of a Sri Lankan twist on the breakfast though...like egg hoppers!

We had a few chats with Kumari and found her to be a lovely helpful lady who is also involved with a few community aid projects, which we thought great.

All up we couldn't have picked a better base for our explorations of Kandy. As I said, don't expect any luxuries, just a very pleasant and homely experience and you won't be disappointed. Thanks Kumari and team!

Kumari Madugalle's home is a calm and friendly base for getting to know Kandy and visiting its surrounding sights. Our room in her home was clean and simply furnished, and all around her very tastefully furnished house there are very interesting old family photographs which she is happy to tell you about.

She organised a one day visit for us to Dambulla and Sigirya (a UN heritage site which requires great stamina to climb the massive stair up to the top) with their comfortable car and driver, and on another day we visited the Botanical Gardens (georgous) and the elephant orphanage (cute). Kumari is also a great cook and we had a wonderful traditional Sri Lankan meal one evening.

we had great difficulty in finding an email address to make a booking for this guest house, having seen all the glowing recommendations on Trip Advisor, so if you are in the same boat here is how you contact Kumari: madugallere@yahoo.com

Lovely guesthouse, central located. The owners are very friendly people. It's like living in their house with the privacy of rooms in a different part of the house. You can sit outside in front of you room on an well decorataded veranda style balcony.

Kumari literally welcomed us two couples into her home for the night. The rooms were clean and welcoming. Her house has pictures of her family from the past and you get a glimpse into a Sri Lankan household. The house itself is lovely and in the middle of a nice neighbourhood - walkable distance to everything in Kandy. We made the right decision and had her cook us supper - it was AMAZING!! she made us 4 different curries - all with ORGANIC vegetables. She had cold 3 coins beer and served us until we were stuffed. It was wonderful. breakfast was great as well. and we really enjoyed chatting with Kumari and getting to know her. She undoubtely spoiled us and we recommend her homestay highly!!

I had HUGE expectations from Kandy but was tad disappointed. Don't mistake me. Kandy is still a good place to visit but that is exactly what it is: A good place and nothing amazing as I had initially thought. There are many better places in SL to visit. However if you do plan to visit Kandy, I strongly recommend Kumari Madugalle's Guest House (Home). Trust me, our stay at this guest house is the only thing we remember after our trip earlier this year and the person, who made it memorable, is Kumari, an old lady, who takes care of guests with utmost sincerity and kindness. During our stay, our 5 year old became ill. It can be tricky to have an ill child during foreign trips but Kumari helped us out with hospital details, location etc. We felt being home and that’s the best part of our stay. Last week my Uncle along with his family friends also stayed at the same guest home and was quite impressed.

The only not-so good thing about the guest house is its proximity to train tracks. However the trains weren't that frequent so it wasn't a big deal for us. The only recommendation I would like to add is to provide Wi-Fi (possibly free) to guests. There is a internet browsing centre not far away from this guest house but nothing like browsing from the comfort of your home.

Overall an Excellent experience! Thanks Kumari!

I had the fortune of spending 3 nights in this wonderful, warm and inviting guest house. I have been traveling in asia for the better part of the past year, and this was by far one of the best, if not the best guest house I have stayed in. The owner, Kumari, was just delightful. She was full of knowledge about the area and a gracious host—she made you feel like a part of her family. For instance, It just so happened that my friend's birthday coincided with our stay and Kumari surprised her by arranging for a special birthday tea, with sandwiches and gorgeous cake. A simple happy birthday would have sufficed, but Kumari went above and beyond to make my friend's day special.

The guest house in a great location (within walking distance to the Temple of the Tooth, the lake, the central market, the local bus station etc.). The rooms and the bathrooms were spotless—clean sheets (twin and double beds available) and a modern bathroom with hot water (we paid 3,500LKR, bfast included, for a twin room). To top it off the food was fantastic—traditional rice and curries for dinner and nice breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit and tea, (If you happen to be the only ones eating bfast, you can ask to have traditional Sri Lankan fare—which was very tasty).

If you are heading to Kandy, Madugalle guest house is hands down where you should stay.
