We stayed in this house for two nights and then stayed in Sigirya before coming back to stay at the guesthouse for another night. The title - Kandy Guest House - is a bit of a misnomer. It isn't in Kandy and it is more like a home stay than a Guest House. The house is located around 30 minutes out of the centre of Kandy in a Tuk Tuk. The location is both a negative and a positive. Despite not being in Kandy, and none of the Kandy Tuk Tuk drivers know where to take you, it is located in a beautiful, peaceful setting next to a river. For us, it was nice to be outside of the congested, polluted Kandy. But we can understand why other guests might complain that it was not in Kandy.
Nevertheless, George, his wife, and his children are all very welcoming. George is a savvy businessman who likes to talk about his tours and isn't shy when asking guests to write on tripadvisor. I suppose it's fair enough, he has a family to support and he is obviously a hard-working man. However, George is also friendly and helpful, and useful to consult on all aspects of travelling around in Sri Lanka. We booked a couple of trips through him and they were a reasonable price. George's brother Ravi took us on two trips and he was brilliant. He is a safe, cautious driver and a smart and friendly man. He even climbed a hill in the pouring rain to rescue us with some umbrellas. Whilst George's other drivers were perfectly fine, Ravi went the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and enjoyable experience.
Because of its location, it was difficult to eat anywhere except George's house. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing - his wife makes delicious food - and it wasn't too expensive either. However, being forced to eat at the guest house was an experience that we got bored of by the end of the holiday and I think it is a problem that repeats itself in many places throughout Sri Lanka - the lack of choice about where to eat and go out at night. This was the beginning of our holiday so we didn't mind so much at this stage.
The rooms were nice and they were also clean. We had the room on top which has a lovely balcony overlooking the river. It was very peaceful with great views. The shower was a bit dodgy, with a plug right next to it! It did give hot water though. Breakfast was excellent.
Overall, a nice home stay with a lovely family. George is a helpful man with excellent english and very useful if planning other trips and tours around Sri Lanka. Kandy itself is congested and polluted so it was nice to be outside of it. However, despite the beautiful and peaceful location, the guest house is difficult to find and you will probably end up eating at the guest house in the evening because it is by far the easiest option. At least the food is excellent so this is not a bad thing.
