“Lovely family home-stay outside of Kandy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

We stayed in this house for two nights and then stayed in Sigirya before coming back to stay at the guesthouse for another night. The title - Kandy Guest House - is a bit of a misnomer. It isn't in Kandy and it is more like a home stay than a Guest House. The house is located around 30 minutes out of the centre of Kandy in a Tuk Tuk. The location is both a negative and a positive. Despite not being in Kandy, and none of the Kandy Tuk Tuk drivers know where to take you, it is located in a beautiful, peaceful setting next to a river. For us, it was nice to be outside of the congested, polluted Kandy. But we can understand why other guests might complain that it was not in Kandy.

Nevertheless, George, his wife, and his children are all very welcoming. George is a savvy businessman who likes to talk about his tours and isn't shy when asking guests to write on tripadvisor. I suppose it's fair enough, he has a family to support and he is obviously a hard-working man. However, George is also friendly and helpful, and useful to consult on all aspects of travelling around in Sri Lanka. We booked a couple of trips through him and they were a reasonable price. George's brother Ravi took us on two trips and he was brilliant. He is a safe, cautious driver and a smart and friendly man. He even climbed a hill in the pouring rain to rescue us with some umbrellas. Whilst George's other drivers were perfectly fine, Ravi went the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and enjoyable experience.

Because of its location, it was difficult to eat anywhere except George's house. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing - his wife makes delicious food - and it wasn't too expensive either. However, being forced to eat at the guest house was an experience that we got bored of by the end of the holiday and I think it is a problem that repeats itself in many places throughout Sri Lanka - the lack of choice about where to eat and go out at night. This was the beginning of our holiday so we didn't mind so much at this stage.

The rooms were nice and they were also clean. We had the room on top which has a lovely balcony overlooking the river. It was very peaceful with great views. The shower was a bit dodgy, with a plug right next to it! It did give hot water though. Breakfast was excellent.

Overall, a nice home stay with a lovely family. George is a helpful man with excellent english and very useful if planning other trips and tours around Sri Lanka. Kandy itself is congested and polluted so it was nice to be outside of it. However, despite the beautiful and peaceful location, the guest house is difficult to find and you will probably end up eating at the guest house in the evening because it is by far the easiest option. At least the food is excellent so this is not a bad thing.

We stayed at Kandy guesthouse for one night. Despite of the remote location which is 30 mins away from Kandy town, we were so pleased by the great hospitality that we received from George and his family. The rooms are clean and we really enjoyed the home cooked dinner by George's lovely wife, that was one of our best meals in Sri Lanka.
We would highly recommend this guesthouse to anybody who loves home-stay during travelling.

Stayed here whilst travelling around Sri Lanka in October. Not a bad place to stay, clean rooms with a host who is very very proud. Unfortunately the name of the guest house Kandy does not reflect where it is located. It is at least 40mins from Kandy and particularly difficult to find. So much so George had to come and find us in our tuk tuk the first time we arrived. A tuk tuk will cost approx 500 ruppees, or you can catch a train into Kandy.

The rooms were clean and had modern bathrooms. The weather when we stayed was horrendous, we stayed in. However there is no space allocated to the bottom room to sit out. The other two rooms have balconies. This is more of a home-stay than a guest house, you spend alot of time with George the owner and host and his family.

George, my wife and I are undecided about. He down grades the help he has employed as servants and as a home stay he's trying to hard. He was also particularly pushy with us to make sure we wrote good reviews of his guest house and mentioned this repeatedly during our one night stay.

George also runs a tour company and spends much time encouraging you to use it. We booked a van to take us to Newrya Ella, we agreed a price based on 6 people travelling including pick ups etc. I rang the day before to confirm and the price had gone up another 1000 rupees and he had gone back on his agreement.

Despite this, the food we had for lunch was amazing!

Overall, a nice guesthouse for sunny days, that is miles from Kandy, with a host that is more of a business man.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony, and if you want to see Kandy in the evening stay at the Mcleod Inn.

We stayed at George's guest house for one night, and wish it had been more. George picked us up at the train station himself and whisked us back to the guest house for a relaxing cup of tea on the balcony overlooking the river while we discussed our plans for the next few days. He had perfect suggestions for us, and we used him and his brother Ravi as our driver for the next few days as well. Both were very knowledgable, and we really enjoyed our time with them.
Our room at the guest house was spotless, and very comfortable - they even provide free wifi access. Without a doubt though, the highlight of our stay was George's wife's magical cooking. Best food we had in Sri Lanka, and we stuffed ourselves silly.
All in all, this was a great place to stay, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone. True, it isn't in downtown Kandy, but I think that enhances the appeal and creates a perfect getaway. George is a great host, prepared with suggestions and happy to chat, but not overbearing at all. It felt like staying with friends, which next time it will be!

Staying here reminded me of the old days when I grew up in my 'kampung' (as we call it in Malaysia) or village. Very simple, quiet and refreshing surrounding. The day is mostly spent outdoors and then went home to savour the delicious home made food! If you want to feel this, this is where to be. I have a big appetite and the food prepared here is awesome! Highly recommended for anyone who wants a quiet getaway.

The Kandy guesthouse is very comfortable. You have a nice river is the back of the house where u can enjoy from your balcony. The guesthouse is about 20 min outside of Kandy but u get away from the hustle and bustle of the town. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and the shower is comfortable. George, the owner of the guesthouse, is extremely friendly and personal. He picked me up from the Colombo airport at 4:30 am in the morning and Kandy is about 3 hours away!!! Also his wife Ann is an amazing cook! Her breakfast and dinner are sooo delicious that I didnt want to go out and eat. Highly recommend staying here and experience the guesthouse.
