“Very relaxing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

After the hustle and bustle of a day in Kandy or a day visiting the Elephant Orphange, it's a great place to stay and relax. It is about a 25-30 drive from Kandy so it is a bit off the beaten path. Overlooking a paddy field and true nature, we found it a great place to just walk, talk and unwind. The old mansion offers plenty of space inside and outside. The friendly staff stayed out of the way but were helpful when needed. It's real value for money.

After staying in the wonderful Horathapola hotel in an old plantation house, we were expecting a similar quality. The hotel building is itself elegant and large. However the bedrooms and bathrooms are very tired. The outdoor restaurant is lovely but the dinner was poor. The swimming pool was closed.
The hotel desperately needs more professional management and a dose of TLC. A few million dollars spent on renovation would raise it the level the building deserves

We stayed at the family run Mansion for 3 days and absolutely loved the experience. Found the staff charming - one went to considerable effort to book train tickets for us which was much appreciated. There is plenty of space within the hotel - perfect for a family with children ie table tennis, pool, garden, and lots of quiet chilling areas. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The actual building is stunning - slept in a room that Gandhi stayed in in 1928! Whilst I agree it could do with a bit of a makeover the prices charged reflect this. Also liked the location - away from Kandy in a very quiet location. Would absolutely recommend martineduggan954@hotmail.com

We loved it, but yes it's old, the pool is a bit dirty, the plumbing is old, the towels ragged, etc, but..
You get to stay in a beautiful old house between paddy fields. Friendly staff, good food and at a very good price for the experience you get.

So if you are not afraid of adventure, this is the one for you!

If you feel everything should be impeccably clean and new, go somewhere else!

A beautiful location but the hotel is in need of refurbishment. The first room had no working fan or air conditioning and the second room's plumbing was very dodgy. Booked for 3 nights but 1 was enough. On the positive side the staff were very friendly and the food was great. Couldn't recommend.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your review and truly Sorry for the nuisance we put you through due to a technical fault which occurred when you were checking in. Even though we fixed it first thing in the morning we still failed to impress you and its more than understandable. As you have mentioned the cistern in your room was indeed “dodgy” it was a new unit and we have changed it back to a regular. As we have always done in the past we take complains very seriously and act on them right away, kindly visit us again to show you how your input has contributed. Thank You

This is wonderful hotel, full of character and old world charm. The whole place is redolent with history, and it takes little imagination to work out what it was like in its heyday. The swimming pool has been refurbished, and is a great place for a refreshing swim - and to work off some of the calories taken on in the restaurant.

The surrounding area is also very picturesque, with paddy fields. We watched the rice being harvested, and went for a walk down through the village.

The staff were charming, professional and attentive, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

But the crowing glory was the food. The rice and curries were so good we had to eat them every meal for the (sadly only) two days that we stayed. Even though we ordered fish and chicken curries, on each occasion they were totally different flavours. The accompanying curries included capsicum and tomato curry, two different types of potato curry, two different eggplant curries and two different bean curries. Coconut sambals, green mango chutney and poppadums were standard inclusions.

For breakfast we feasted on string hoppers with again a varied selection of curries.

The hotel is a little way out of Kandy, and is not for those who yearn for the night life. But if you appreciate beautiful scenery, a touch of old style opulence, excellent service and wonderful food, you will be seriously missing out if you do not spend a couple of nights here.
