“Grand splendour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2011 via mobile

What a fabulous find away from it all! Although it's 11km from Kandy, it's well worth the journey. The rooms are basic but very clean(but what you expect knowing M Gandhi stayed here in 1928!) the staff are very welcoming and make you feel as if you're the lady of the manor.
Recommend this to anyone who wants to soak up some history away from it all!

Grand guest house with tranquil gardens and lots of birds. Service was great but food a little disappointing. Swimming pool in desperate need of daily cleaning and had I been travelling with the children we would have complained as the weather was quite hot and unable to swim in such a dirty pool. Small fridge and aircon work well.Would stay again but ring ahead and make sure the pool got a clean.....

Room Tip: Room 206 was a little more private than others

we stayed one night in this lovely Hotel. Very clean and large rooms. Helpful staff and dinner and breakfast was simple but nice. It is about 20 mins from town, but set in the hillside amongst the rice fields. I would stay here again, its great value for money.

This hotel was a brilliant find, although a little remote, the staff were brilliant, the food was excellent, the facilities were brilliant. The table tennis table was a definite hit! Woulkd definitely like to return.

A fine example of a VIP Residence during British colonial times .Superbly carved, massive, wooden doors and stairways. High ceilings. They’ve modernized the bathrooms.

GOOD ASPECTS

The above ,plus good cleanliness, nice views and Dhanuka and Senaratne are super –friendly management .They’re really ,genuinely ,interested in the satisfaction of their guests.

NEGATIVES

Very amateurish operation .No housekeeping checks .Examples : Lots of cold or hot water in the shower but only hot in the washbasin! I can brush my teeth with hot water but its rather wasteful!

Our group used five rooms .Two A/C were not working .The Mgr. claimed surprise. One was repaired and the other room charge was cancelled.

In our room two light bulbs were burned out. Pursuant to our request they were soon replaced but it was obvious no one had checked the rooms.

We had Sri Lankan food in the restaurant . A Sri Lankan “Rice +Curry” meal always includes at least four different curries plus a couple of of sambols, curd and a sweet . For our first meal, The Mansion had one single curry .Pursuant to our insistence on the second day there were three. The quantities in all cases were stingy!

CONCLUSION
If I have to chose between an efficient but bland ,impersonal ,cookie –cutter type of chain hotel or an amateurish but super –friendly boutique hotel ,I prefer the latter .So I presume we’d return to The Mansion but I’d probably eat elsewhere.

We stayed at the Mansion for only three nights but wish we'd had longer.

The Mansion is a beautiful old building converted to a hotel, with only about ten rooms - we saw two or three other couples while we were there, so very private. Our room was big, with the highest ceilings I've seen! We arrived early after landing at 5am and the staff were happy for us to sleep straight away and check in later. The grounds are lovely (it overlooks a cute little valley) as is the pool - which we had to ourselves each time we used it. Small TV area which we also had to ourselves, has some international channels (and about 6 channels showing cricket!!) The whole building was clean and rooms were cleaned daily; there was a wedding while we were there so everything was looking ship-shape! The staff were all really friendly and helpful (even when I shouted at them when our airport pick-up hadn't arrived!), and knew lots about the area and country, and recommended transport options and booked guesthouses for our onward travel. As it's a bit out of the way we ate there two nights out of three and the food was really good and well priced.

Only small downside is that it's a fair way from Kandy - about 20 minutes, but you can get a bus for 25 rupees (15p) which run every few minutes from the bottom of the road, or a tuk-tuk for about 500 (about £3). However, as The Mansion is a lot cheaper than other places of the same standard in Kandy, the difference more than covers the transport cost. Also, we couldn't get the wifi to work, but the staff were happy to lend a dongle.

Overall it was the nicest place we stayed in Sri Lanka, and one of the nicest places I've stayed ever, fantastic value for the price, and we'd recommend it to everyone.

My wife and I just came back from a 2 weeks trip to Sri Lanka. We spent the last days at the Mansion - and I am still happy we found that wonderful place.

The first day we arrived, it was almost empty - so, we actually felt like a couple of aristicrats spending their weekend in this beautiful colonial palace in the middle of the djungle. According to the hotel, people like Ghandy and Gregory Peck spent some days there a long time ago. These guys already knew how to live.
The second day, another couple joined us and we were wondering why the hotel staff was decorating the complete first floor. The third day, the garden was full of locals celebrating the wedding of a young couple of Kandy - all of them beautifully dressed and kissing that place alive as if it was a Bollywood movie full of shiny, happy people.

The Mansion is not a polished 5 star hotel. It is a bit aged - actually like all the places we have been in Sri Lanka. Besides that, I doubt that I will find something similar again - unless I pay a fortune.

This place has it all: a wonderfull old building with a big garden, an ever caring stuff - and "atmosphere". And all of that in the middle of the djungle. The only thing missing is a license for alcohol. So, if you want to enjoy a beer in the evening, just bring it with you :-)

If I come back to Sri Lanka, I will definitely spand some days there again!
