“Lovely stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

This hotel, high in the hills over Kandy, is a gem. Our amazing guide, hansa@feellanka.com, booked us at this lovely stop that we wouldn't have found otherwise. The hotel is small and intimate, the staff courteous and helpful and the views are spectacular! A must stay when visiting Kandy.

We stayed at Theva Residency for 2 nights over New Years. It was the most stylish hotel we stayed at in 10 days in Sri Lanka. The rooms are not large, but well designed. The view is amazing. Food was very good (especially the NYE party) and the staff were top-notch. It's a great place to come for lunch even if you are not staying here. Lastly, the infinity pool--amazing!

One other thing I'd like to add--it seemed that people working at the hotel were really happy to be there. They celebrated with us over NYE and their energy was infectious.

A real hidden gem - a second recommendation by our travel agents, imagine asia - but so happy I decided to go with this choice. Great service, stunning views from the terrace and you must try the Theva 17 curry special!

Set high on the hills above Kandy, this is one of the many new hotels being built around town. The rooms are a very stark white, so much so that in the afternoon you need either sunglasses or to pull the shades down. That aside this is an excellent place to stay, good restaurant, lovely breakfast and staff who are only too willing to please. Great view of the township and a sigh of relief that we weren't staying in the middle of town which is a typical noisy busy Sri Lankan city.

The Theva Residence is a little haven in Kandy. It is set high up in the hills, with beautiful views over Kandy town. The hotel itself doesn't look much from the outside, but each room is individually themed and I can say our room (suite #3) was spectacular. We had a jacuzzi bath set in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, which was thoroughly enjoyable after a few hours sightseeing in the town.

The service is impeccable, better than we could have expected. The waiters are all extremely friendly, attentive and a pleasure to speak with. This service along with the delicious food were the icing on the cake for us. For dinner we enjoyed 17 curries and a good wine selection, followed by a Sri Lankan breakfast the next morning.

I don't think that the Trip Advisor reviews do this hotel justice. We. Had an absolutely wonderful stay and I would highly recommend it to others.

Lovely hotel, although it lacked guests during our stay which was a bit weird to be there almost on our own.
Staff gracious and helpful, food was delicious.
Room comfort was the only negative, the bed was hard and had a design around it which was made of wood, you could not help but bump into it. Nasty bruises!
Room was small and cramped - no where to put luggage is always a gripe of mine.
Bathroom lighting is another. You need a light to see in a bathroom.

We always check out the negative reviews of the places we are considering, and the very few negative reviews we read about Theva of course gave us pause, but the overwhelming number singing its praises convinced us. Honestly, the couple of complaints we read in others' reviews just did NOT fit our experience at all, which was uniformly wonderful. We have absolutely no complaints, even tiny ones.

The welcome we received when we arrived at the hotel was warm and friendly (and the welcome drink AMAZING). That kind of warm, friendly attention was carried through during our 2-day stay, from every single person we met -- the manager, the smiling men who waited on us at breakfast and dinner, everyone. Even the tuk-tuk driver they called for us was memorably great.

The room was just beautiful, and even though we had one of the smaller rooms it had a magnificent view. It was a great size for us, and the bed was very comfortable (I wish I could get the pillows for my house, they were perfect!). The safe was easy to work, the amenities were beautiful, it came with everything we needed.

The food was really wonderful too; don't neglect to eat the 17 curry dinner one night! It was a huge feast, but quite good. And get the Sri Lankan breakfast one morning too, it's also exceptional. (But if you're still too full after the 17 curries the night before, the other breakfasts are great too....)

The location is kind of remote -- too far up the mountain to just walk to town -- and whether you think that's wonderful or not depends on what you want, of course. Although we usually love to walk into town, it's so simple to get the tuk-tuk (and 1000 rupees for roundtrip plus him waiting for you) that it's not a big deal at all. We enjoyed the tuk-tuk rides ourselves, and the view over the city made up for not getting to easily walk into town.
The entire experience was a highlight of trip to Sri Lanka. The restaurant with it's gorgeous views (and great food), the grounds, the lovely and helpful people, the beautiful room, the truly helpful attitudes of everyone, it all made us wish we had more than two days to stay at Theva. The only remedy is to go back, and we hope we can, someday!
