We always check out the negative reviews of the places we are considering, and the very few negative reviews we read about Theva of course gave us pause, but the overwhelming number singing its praises convinced us. Honestly, the couple of complaints we read in others' reviews just did NOT fit our experience at all, which was uniformly wonderful. We have absolutely no complaints, even tiny ones.
The welcome we received when we arrived at the hotel was warm and friendly (and the welcome drink AMAZING). That kind of warm, friendly attention was carried through during our 2-day stay, from every single person we met -- the manager, the smiling men who waited on us at breakfast and dinner, everyone. Even the tuk-tuk driver they called for us was memorably great.
The room was just beautiful, and even though we had one of the smaller rooms it had a magnificent view. It was a great size for us, and the bed was very comfortable (I wish I could get the pillows for my house, they were perfect!). The safe was easy to work, the amenities were beautiful, it came with everything we needed.
The food was really wonderful too; don't neglect to eat the 17 curry dinner one night! It was a huge feast, but quite good. And get the Sri Lankan breakfast one morning too, it's also exceptional. (But if you're still too full after the 17 curries the night before, the other breakfasts are great too....)
The location is kind of remote -- too far up the mountain to just walk to town -- and whether you think that's wonderful or not depends on what you want, of course. Although we usually love to walk into town, it's so simple to get the tuk-tuk (and 1000 rupees for roundtrip plus him waiting for you) that it's not a big deal at all. We enjoyed the tuk-tuk rides ourselves, and the view over the city made up for not getting to easily walk into town.
The entire experience was a highlight of trip to Sri Lanka. The restaurant with it's gorgeous views (and great food), the grounds, the lovely and helpful people, the beautiful room, the truly helpful attitudes of everyone, it all made us wish we had more than two days to stay at Theva. The only remedy is to go back, and we hope we can, someday!
