“Nice Ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

We were in room 241 this time and this was our fourth visit to Avani Kalutara. Previous times were when the hotel was Kani Lanka. Still the calmness did prevail and it was a relaxing experience too.

We were treated very well specially keeping our three year old son happy with fruit baskets and chocolates sent for him. Especial thank you should go to to the Front Desk Manager Manoj P. for making sure that we had a very comfortable stay in the hotel and Abhiramie from the Reservations for making sure we had the room as soon as we arrived even at tight time when the hotel was running full.

We will be visiting again for sure in the future since as always we have had a very memorable stay. One downfall would be the menu. The spread for Dinner & Bfast can improve. It doesn't need to be a costly affair but introduce more local cuisine with local veggies, meat or fish. Where tourist and locals both would be able to enjoy at a reasonable cost.

Room Tip: Superior Sea View Room is good but if the view is covered by trees then its not much of view. We wou...

Nice design and amazing location. Most of the staff was very friendly.Rooms are spacious and decorated with taste. The swimming pool is big enough.
The pool towels are quite old. Some staff looking only for tips. The buffet looks nice but is tasteless.
No sea view from the so called sea view rooms.

We have recently returned from a 10 night trip. Its location between the beach and lagoon make for a wonderful view wherever you are in the hotel. Its location on the island means a long trip if you want to go to Kandy, the elephant orphanage and Udalawale national park. We made the trips and although long and tiring, they are truly worth it!!! Not alot to do in Kalutara apart from the temple and richmond castle, the town is worth a tuk tuk ride. Talking of tuk tuks..... what fun!! There have been many comments on here about the beach boys.... however we didn't find them any bother what so ever. (You want to go to Egypt.... then you'll know what its like to be badgered!) We took a walk up to the train line to look at the church, and what a lovely experience,. All the locals come out of their houses and talk to you..... we even swapped some mango's for a local fruit on their tree. The tuk tuk drivers do offer you lifts, but we enjoyed the walk......

The food at the hotel is good, very tasty and plentiful, most nights it was varied, but I love curry so I was in my element! We used to wait for the rush!! and go when it was a little quieter, but there is plenty of seating. We were half board and would of liked another option apart from the all inclusive buffet. There is another restaurant downstairs that noone ever eats in as it is at an additional cost.... maybe they could think about utilising that! The pool area is always clean and tidy. The pool boys are right behind you with a towel. We never had a problem getting a sunbed, whatever time we went....... however there was the usual reserving of the beds at 6am (and then dont sit on them half the day). Completely unnecessary!!!!! We had a ground floor sea view room, although we couldnt see the sea it was a lovely outlook. The room we had was of good size, and had lots of storage etc.... The cleanliness could of been a little better. The only real negatives are the rather worn out and grubby towels and some of the room boys could make a nuisance of themselves if they knew you where in your room..... offering towels and showing you what they had done. The bar areas are really lovely and the bar staff really friendly. There is little in the way of evening entertainment apart from the odd man and his keyboard.... so if your looking for a full on evening entertainment package, you'll be bored here. We chose it for the relaxed evening atmosphere. The bars do wind down quite early and you can often find yourselves on your own after 10.30pm. All the public areas are spotlessly clean.

We got married here........ and it was spectacular. A truly memorable day. We could not have asked for anything more. Melaica who is the wedding co-ordinator did a truly fabulous job and we cant thank her enough for all the hard work she put it in to making our day so special. If you are considering getting married here you will not be disappointed!! To round off the day we had a lovely candlelight dinner on the lagoon and fireworks. The whole atmosphere was amazing and we have to thank Rohan, he was our waiter for the day/evening and breakfast in our room. We were upgraded to a suite room for the night of the wedding and it was huge, with an additional lounge area and very large bathroom with double bath. Nice!!

Thank you to Gahan, one of the restaurant waiters who was so lovely and hope his "Princess Katie" is doing well.... All the staff are very friendly and cant do enough for you. When we revisit Sri Lanka, we would not hesitate in going back to this hotel. However i think we would do a week in the north doing all the sights, before a relaxing week here.

Room Tip: If you can go the extra mile for a suite..... do it!

When we arrived I was impressed (as it was rated 3+ by our tour operator) - very modern, colourful, smiley staff etc. The rooms are not huge but perfectly adequate and the beds are really comfy. AVANI are part of Anantara, a Thai chain and you can see the Asian flair in the design. But this is Sri Lanka so the concrete Geoffrey Bawa look prevails which doesn't suit everyone. I really enjoyed the food (buffet, a la carte, poolside, breakfasts) with a good amount of variation but I have to say, many items at the poolside bar were unavailable every day we were there which needs to be addressed. I was on half board and I did feel we were neglected by the pool when we needed to order food or drinks at lunchtime - I realised most people were on All Inclusive and presumably the hotel don't want to encourage people drinking or eating too much! But this meant we had to hang around alot and find staff. Also, I ordered fresh orange juice on a couple of occasions which was delicious - then on other occasions it arrived watered down with orange concentrate - just a bit cheeky as it was expensive by SL standards (about £3.50 a glass). The pool itself was lovely but I agree with one of the previous reviewers that the towels were extremely tatty - they need to replace these more often. The staff on the whole were really friendly though and great fun .. we teased them about winning the 20/20 England/Sri Lanka match during the world cup when we were there which all brought massive smiles to their faces. By the end of the 3 nights, I was really sad to go! TIP FOR HOTEL: The 'watersports' area was a disaster. If you expect people to hire kayaks or canoes you need to make the area safe, accessible and alluring. It was awful! But, most people wouldn't use this area anyway I suppose. All in all, á really nice hotel.

We stayed here is September as the first part of our honeymoon. We stayed here for 7 nights, and was not disappointed. The hotel is beautiful, and the staff were wonderful. Food was amazing, so much choice, all freshly cooked. The pool area was nice and relaxing. Beach isn't a sunbathing beach although it was lovely to walk down. Excursions were great, and we explored Kalutara itself - although from the reaction of staff and tuk tuk drivers, we are the first people to ever walk into town! Rooms were wonderful and clean, with fresh greetings laid out in flowers on the bed, and animals made from towels every day. This really is a relaxing resort so if you aren't looking for quiet, then you could possibly be bored. My advice is to make the most of the do not disturb signs on the door as staff are so super friendly, that sometimes they keep knocking and offering towels etc can get a little annoying, but they honestly mean well. Our complimentary spa treatment was amazing. All in all I was sad to leave this beautiful place. The country and the people were amazing, and the hotel is a little gem set in the lagoon.

I dont know if I was staying at the same hotel who rate this hotel.
No lift, grey stained towels with sun oil, no chairs to sit in bedrooms except for one small desk chair sit on the end of the bed if you want to watch TV. Bare cement unpainted walls.
