We stayed at the mermaid hotel at the end of February/beginning of March 2014. In all honesty, we couldn't fault the hotel in any way. We stayed in a deluxe room and found it was well worth the extra cost. The view from the bed (and the toilet) was gorgeous... Just palm trees and ocean. When we arrived our room was not yet ready so we were given a standard room for the morning to enable us to rest after the long trip. These rooms are spacious and comfortable and have partial views of the sea. The rooms are kept very clean and the hotel provided plug in mosquito repellants, which were changed daily. Except for the odd bug, we had no insect problems at all. There are coffee making facilities in the room, plenty of wardrobe space and a HUGE, comfortable bed. Fabulous view of the grounds, beach and sunset from the balcony. The only problem we had was that the air conditioning unit failed, but this was resolved almost immediately after reporting it.
The hotel grounds are well maintained. Plenty of sun beds available and the palm trees provide ample shade. The pool is a decent size and is clean and warm. The hotel has a sports/spa centre attached. This includes a pool, gym, volleyball court and children's play area. We liked the fact that this was in a separate area to the main grounds. This ensured that if you didn't want to take part in activities, you could relax without being disturbed by loud music or the shouting that inevitably comes with team activities.
This is predominantly an all-inclusive hotel so obviously food quality is important. We can honestly say we found the food to be outstanding! Every meal time came with a large selection of extremely tasty options including salads and soups, pasta, rice, tasty meat dishes, vegetables, and delicious authentic curries. And of course we have to mention the fabulous desserts... Lots of choice and small portions allow you to try a bit of everything if you have room (we ALWAYS had room). Semolina, crumbles, fritters, cheesecakes and plenty of other lovely creations. There is also plenty of fruit for the more disciplined guest :-). A payable a la carte menu is also available if preferred.
Every member of staff we saw was friendly and professional. Bar staff, reception, room attendants, pool staff, sports centre staff, waiting on and catering.... Absolutely everybody would go out of their way to help and ensure customers are having a good holiday. The service is impeccable! The guest coordinator (sorry we didn't find out her name) helped us arrange transport for an early morning trip and for transfer to the airport. She always had a smile and was interested to hear what guests had to say regarding all aspects of their holiday. We used the hotels car service to and from the airport. As well as being a reasonable cost (approx. £40 each way), we felt very safe on what are possibly the worst roads we have seen... There doesn't appear to be any Highway Code in Sri Lanka!!
You can't go to Sri Lanka without getting out and seeing part of the country. There are various ways you can do this... Sort it yourself, go through your holiday rep or utilise a local tour company. After reading previous reviews we decided to take a chance with Suresh tours. He is easily recognisable with his red Mohican and can be found most days in his "office" on the beach in front of the hotel. People may be understandably reluctant to hand money over to "beach boys", BUT we found Suresh and his colleagues to be nothing but reliable, honest and hard working. We booked an overnight tour taking in Udawalawe elephant transit centre, Yala National Park safari, Mirissa whale watching and Bentota river boat safari (as well as turtle hatchery, stick fishermen, tsunami memorial and other stops). Suresh and co take pride in what they do and will go out of their way to make sure trips go ahead without any cause for complaint. We have no qualms whatsoever in recommending Suresh tours to organise trips. As far as we are concerned they were good value for money and very professional.
Between us we have been to many places around the world. We can honestly say that Sri Lanka, the mermaid hotel and suresh tours combined to make one of the best holidays we have ever experienced.
