Just returned from a 9 njght break at the mermaid, what a beautiful country, fantastic hotel and wonderful staff. Comfortable rooms, great food and would definitely recommend Ravi the guide we met on the beach who was happy to adapt a tour of the elephant sanctuary with a guide of pineapple and tea plantation thank you all again

Our family (4 kids+2adults) went on trip of a lifetime from Ireland to Sri Lanka in August 2012. After a superb tour of Sri Lanka where we stayed in a range of locations we arrived at the Mermaid.
We were looking forward to concluding a wonderful trip with five nights of a beach stay with an all inclusive package.
With hindsight we should have been sensitive to the polite message when our guide went out of his way each time we mentioned the hotel to say that it was not booked by his local company.

On arrival the rooms we were shown to had a horrible smell in them which we were assured would clear with the air conditioning - it didn't - it just got worse. (It turned out to be from the plumbing/sanitation.)
When I placed the key of the room in the card holder the switch sparked and exploded loudly cutting out the power in the room. I was taken aback and shocked (literally) and when I reported it to reception the maintenance guy called just flicked a trip switch and told me not to put the keycard in again!

The rooms themselves were shabby and unclean - a bit like a 1970's family holiday camp which hadn't been updated or even well cleaned. The door to the bathroom was swollen and wouldn't close -The TV with it's sellotaped remote had seen better days and all the presenters who appeared had green faces which gave the kids a bit of a laugh and us a little light relief. The curtains in the room were stained and unclean and the woodwork was splashed with untidy paint marks.

We desperately tried to keep up a brave face and took a walk around the premises and onto the beach where things just didn't get any better. The exit to the beach was filled with emaciated dogs and a large group of beach sellers who on the day appeared intimidating. On walking the beach it was filthy - litter and plastic strewn all around both left and right of the hotel frontage and just uncared for.

When we returned to the restaurant I attempted to add an additional chair to our table but the arm of the chair just came away when I lifted it.

The most diplomatic thing I can say is that after travelling a long way around the globe the quality of the Mermaid hotel was not what we expected and definitely not reflective of the reviews we read on trip advisor. The experience was so much at odds with other locations in Sri Lanka that despite the inconvienience we insisted on moving.

Although we had to pay up front to move, lost 24 hours of our short holiday and our tour operator got no refund from the mermaid it was the best decision we made on the trip. Thankfully by moving from the Mermaid we saved a memorable holiday in Sri Lanka from being destroyed.

We moved to an alternative hotel ( Detail available if you want to email me) down the coast which was a pleasure to behold with quality clean accommodation, superb food, a golden beach with wild turtles and easy access to the local town and surrounding attractions. The contrast between the two locations could not have been greater- if you intend travelling to beautiful Sri Lanka please ensure your accomodation is of a standard befitting the experience- The mermaid is not!

We thank the reviewer for their stay at Mermaid Hotel & Club and sharing their holiday experience.

The reviewer has informed us on arrival, although they have booked Mermaid Hotel & club which is a 3 ½ star hotel, they were expecting a higher category hotel. Therefore, the reviewer arranged a transfer through their Tour Operator to a 4 ½ star hotel in Bentota on the following morning. As it was their fault, we were compelled to levy the cancellation charges for 2 nights reducing the cancellation fee by 3 nights as a goodwill gesture.

When the key tag has placed on the holder to activate the room master switch the circuit breaker tripped. Shortly afterwards the power was restored by engaging the circuit breaker.

We totally deny all other allegation which may have been reaction to the cancellation.

We spent 2 weeks from 20th Oct at the Mermaid Hotel,
Family of eight, The Staff and Management were excellent, we have been to 5 star hotels and never had the service that the Mermaid gave us.
The rooms were clean and comfortable the food was always good as others have reported the staff could not do enough for you.
We had freak weather Rain for most of our 2 weeks but we still enjoyed ourselves.
I booked the green bamboo restaurant as it was rated on trip adviser on arrival the place looked dirty but we thought the food would be ok we had sea food only 2 out of 8 people ate there meal it was disgusting £125.00 for 2 meals a real rip off.
Avoid the green bamboo at all cost.
We had a few trips with the beach boys Harry Tours, ask for Harha he was great.
All of our party would like to thank the Manager and staff of the Mermaid for a wonderful holiday, we miss you all, and we will be back.

We stayed here for 6 nights in August at the end of our short tour of Sri Lanka - myself and teenage children (16 and 13). I did it the other way round to most - contacted the tour guide - beach boy Thanu, through recommendation on here, and he was excellent. He picked us up from Colombo airport as previously arranged (regular contact on Skype) and took us to my chosen hotel in central Colombo, then came back for us super-early the next day to get to the elephant orphanage in good time. Spacious, airconditioned and extremely comfortable minivan (Chan our driver was excellent). He got us through the crowds at the ticket booths then swiftly down to seats at the perfect vantage point to watch the elephants bathing.
From there we went on to Sigiriya (Sigiriya Village) and Kandy, (Serene Garden) accommodation arranged by Thanu. If anyone would like recommendation on these experiences then contact me. At all times he was ensuring we were comfortable and happy, and took all opportunities to stop by the side of the road to experience local treats and sights. He also took us home to his house for a meal, which was unexpected. When we got to Mermaid the hotel was welcoming and staff as everyone else says on here are fabulous - nothing is too much trouble and they are always smiling. It's not a huge hotel so they do recognise you and know where you like to sit, drink etc. Food on buffet was plentiful and no complaints there at all. Waiters are great, as everyone on here has also recognised.
All inclusive alcohol is ...... well the brands are not what you will recognise and there is no real experience at the bar... glasses are basic and draught mixers, if you know what I mean. But service is quick and friendly.
Rooms I think are pretty basic and could use some upgrading. But I don't wish to nit-pick, this is a beach hotel in Sri Lanka after all. Towels are very old and thin.
Sunbeds are plentiful and towels always available. Chipmunks are fun to watch.
What I did find off-putting, (although I had a very good experience using Thanu the beach boy as a tour guide), was that when we were actually on the hotel grounds, or moving between the main hotel and the spa (there is a public walkway between the two) that the beach boys are continually trying to catch your attention and spend a lot of time trying to spot new arrivals by the hotel pool. I understand this is their livelihood and that they are not physically on the hotel grounds, however you are made to feel as you are continually watched over. Don't suppose the hotel can do much although I did complain about them watching us do water aerobics - I expect some level of privacy and yet the hotel staff said as it was a public right of way they couldn't move them on. Hmmmm...
I used Gamini for a trip - my advice is as a local taxi, say down to Kalutara for example (although not much to see there), fine. I would not use him as a tour guide. I can enlarge on a private message if requested. For pure experience and enjoyment of Sri Lanka, stick to the beach boys, they will ensure you see it all and importantly - have fun while you do!
Beach outside hotel is not nice, although yes we were there at the "wrong" time of year for that side of the island. But there is nowhere to walk to in either direction along the beach anyway. Hotel next door looks dire and thank heaven we were in the Mermaid.
On drive back to Colombo, again Thanu was there to take us in the minivan (I saw other minivans while there and being honest ours was the best) and it was no trouble at all to divert for some last minute shopping in Colombo. I can highly recommend you use him as a tour guide if you stay at the Mermaid Hotel.
Writing this a little late I know but I am happy to respond to any queries at all. All in all, Mermaid is recommended if you are going to Kalutara.

On arrival to the hotel, we were very disappointed with our room 251. I had mailed and requested a top floor room with a sea view, as we have a view of a pool at home. We were given a 1st floor with no views of the sea. It was next to the room boys closet/store where the phone rang from early morning until late at night and the staff entering and moving things! It was next to the stairs where guests from above and on the same floor clumped up and down, and wheeled suitcases past the room from 4am every day. The trains rattled and whistled from early hours of the morning. We asked at reception to be moved and was told the hotel was full.
In the first week my husband was ill with a gastric problem (D&V) following having eaten the a la carte sea food dish, which cannot be proven as the cause. As on conversation with other guests, it appeared were suffering or had suffered from the same symptoms. The following day I spent in bed very lethargic with stomach problems, and the following three days generally unwell and not hungry. When this was mentioned to a member of staff, the reply was many people have 'Delhi belly'. During the course of the holiday and talking to other guests the gastric problem appeared common place(some saying they had been unwell for up to a week)
Maybe this had something to do with the garden bar where the glasses were being rinsed under the tap and dried with a dirty cloth which was lying on a gas cylinder! Taking into consideration, the lovely playful chipmunks who loved to drink from the glasses and the guests who were unwell at the time! After highlighting their 'cleaning' technique, detergent was implemented and hopefully the procedure is still in practice.
Another reason for the 'Delhi belly' may have been the packed breakfasts/lunches, which consisted of chicken and sausages, which were kept in an unrefrigerated room behind the reception. The contents were warm when we were given them in the morning, despite being stored in an air conditioned room. This was documented in the complaints book and the procedure continued up to and including the day we left.
The food was repetitive but very nice, but ideally the salad bar and desserts should have been under refrigerated cabinets.
We discussed all these issues with the management while we were there.
The staff are very good and friendly, without them the hotel would be nothing.
We made many friends, and enjoyed the sports.
We would not return to this hotel or recommend it.

Room Tip: Don't accept room 251, you will hear from 4am onwards, trains, room boys, guests clumping up and...

We refer to the complaint made by the reviewer and wish to outline the following.

It is true that the reviewer has requested a Sea View room. As we have limited number of sea view rooms in the hotel and also there are so many requests for them, we honour them with “first come, first served basis”. Mermaid hotel maintains over 80% year round occupancy and due to this factor, it is hard to allocate sea view rooms to all our Guests. To avoid such situations we advise Guests to book deluxe rooms which has sea view.

On reviewer’s arrival, the Receptionist on duty had specifically informed of the rooms situation and the reviewer had not made any objections to it. Had the reviewer made a request or a complaint, we would have prioritized the request and would have arranged a contingency plan to arrest the situation.

We at Mermaid are always flexible in obliging such requests of changing rooms on availability, whenever there is a necessity. In this regard, regret to state that there had been no record of such a request made during their entire stay.

During the period where the reviewer was staying with us, we had over 110 guests staying and dining in the hotel. Packed breakfast & lunch given away from the Reception, are stored in an air conditioned room adjacent to the Reception to be distributed among Guests who go on excursions. We have no trace whatsoever or any information that any guests were having “Delhi Belly” or any other sickness during this period. It is strange that the reviewer has picked up “Delhi Belly” which is not a known term used here in Sri Lanka, especially in hotels. However, if this sickness had been reported to us by the reviewer, the management would have made arrangements to summon the doctor immediately who is available 24hrs on call to obtain necessary treatment / tests done.

Although the reviewer has mentioned that the glasses at the beach bar which is open from 1000 hrs to 1800 hrs are washed at the beach bar itself, our practice is to supply the daily requirement of the beverages and the washed glasses from the main bar which is about 40 meters away. Only in an emergency, washing of the glasses take place at the beach bar.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for our honeymoon. We arrived and were greeted by a lady who I presume was the manageress from how she was dressed. She was extremely nice and offered us as cold drink while we checked in. Our room was smaller than we would have liked for our honeymoon. I did email and ask if I could upgrade as it was our honeymoon but it was an extra 50 USD a night, which we couldn’t really afford for 10 nights. I was a bit disappointed as the upgraded rooms all seemed to be empty during our stay, but it’s not our right to upgrade I guess it just would have been nice...

Food was excellent, plenty of variety as was the beer, soft drinks and spirits (coffee not so good). The restaurant staff are very good and attentive – special mention to Sammi and Aranga who made dinnertimes extra special. We were on a few trips too and the hotel provided a surprisingly good packed lunch, just ask the night before it will be ready at reception even if you’re up at daft o’clock in the morning. The efficient laundry service is available at reception also.

The recreation facilities are excellent, there is a small gym, ping pong, cricket, water-polo, badminton, two pools and plenty of beds. It wasn’t particularly busy while we were there so I ended up playing cricket and ping pong with the animation staff which was fun! There is also a massage centre and depending on your travel agent you may get a free massage so just check...make sure you tip though! The grounds are kept tidy and there’s always plenty of space.

Few things I didn’t like as much – no WiFi in the rooms, you can only get it near reception. Even if it extended to the bar that would be better but it’s extremely weak at that point and it’s only 20 yards from the receiver. Consider relocating? Bar opens much too late in the morning (10am), while if you just want soft drinks is a bit annoying.

Now moving on to the beach boys – go and see Anu (the guy in trousers and shirt) and you will not be disappointed. He is extremely professional and has excellent prices. We booked two trips with him – one to Kandy and the other to Yala (safari) and both times he surpassed our expectations with his consideration and thoughtfulness. There was many things he did to make our honeymoon as special as possible; big things such as a personal BBQ at a hotel we were staying near Yala. They served prawns, tuna steak, chicken all just for us in the gardens and in Kandy he arranged a romantic meal outside with our own waiting-on team in suits!!! Just amazing! And it wasn’t just this, it was many little things! For example we went to the turtle farm and many people have said it’s just a bunch of tanks, however we we’re able to pick up the turtles and release a number of them into the sea! This is just one of little things because Anu has the best connections all over the island! He knows everyone!! We met his lovely family and ate in his small local restaurant about 100 yards from the hotel! AMAZING PRAWNS and huge! A thoroughly decent man trying to provide the best life for his children!!

I’d recommend Sri Lanka, it’s a lovely country with lovely people and we will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Bring a decent deet% spray as there as many tree in and around the hotel grounds!

we stayed in the mermaid for 14 nights in Sept.
we had booked a transfer from the airport with Henry the hotels taxi driver, he is a super careful driver and it took us over 3 hours to get to the hotel from the airport at 4am! cant even imagine how we would have managed if it was rush hour.
we got to the hotel and after crossing the railway tracks right outside the gate we drove into the hotel. our check in was ok, and the porter brought our bags to our room. after leaving our bags in our room, we thanked him for his help and he stood in our room waiting for a tip. we had no change to give him as a tip and we were going to drop it to him later but he just stood there waiting for a tip. we ended up giving him a large tip as we had no change.

the room was horrible. as soon as we walked in the door there was an awful smell of damp. there was condensation down the whole window. the ceiling had spores of black mould all over it. the back of the curtains were covered in black mould as were the wall lights. it was horrible, all i wanted to do was get out of there. first time i have ever been on holidays and wanted to leave.

we asked to move room on several occasions, but we were always told the hotel was full. over the next few days we got to know some really lovely people. they couldn't believe what we were saying about our room as there's was lovely. they were leaving a few days later so i again went to reception to ask to move to their room as i knew it was free. i was told i would have to speak to the housekeeping manager the following day, which we did and we moved room. they couldn't understand why we wanted to move and didn't seem to be listening to the fact our room was covered in black mould and smelled so bad of damp.

our new room was lovely, it was spotless and there was no mould! Nihal was our room cleaner and he was fantastic. he always left our room spotless and had fresh flowers scattered on the bed every day. he was a real gentleman.

the pool, restaurant and bar were lovely. the restaurant had a good selection but did become a bit repetitive. we had the a la carte menu on a couple of nights and it was fantastic and well worth the money. Aarvynda and Chamal at the pool were helpful everyday, and always had a smile on their face. they couldn't do enough to help you. one day i had an allergy and my eyes were swollen and they were streaming. Chamal went and got me a coconut and told me to wash out my eyes with the coconut water as it had saline in it. it worked wonders and within a few minutes i was back to normal! the bar staff were always helpful and friendly and made excellent tequila sunrises! it is a shame they dont have diet drinks in the hotel, however we did come to realise that diet drinks were hard to find all over sri lanka!it really was the staff who made this hotel.

we went on two trips with Ravi from the beach (he is on the left). we had been told great reports from other people about his trips so we booked two trips with him. we went to yala national park on safari for 2 days. on the way back we did a river safari, galle and turtle sanctuary. it was fantastic! what an amazing experience, and we got to see a leopard walk right past our jeep after killing his dinner, it was amazing.
we booked another trip to the elephant sanctuary also. that was lovely, we got to see the elephants bathing and then we went on an elephant ride! i would definitely recommend Ravi, he was full of info and a great laugh. he also brought us in to Kalutara on a tuc tuc and brought us around to shops and a spice garden.

the hotel was a let down and i was happy to be leaving by the end of our 14 nights. Sri Lanka is a stunning country and there are such beautiful places to see, the mermaid is just not one of them. we were left a comment card at the end of our trip and i informed them of how unhappy we were with our room for the first 5 nights until we moved. i also let them know about the porter on our arrival. i got an email back to say thank you for your such positive comments and please leave a TripAdvisor review! so here i am, flaws and all about the hotel. i would not return to the hotel or i could not recommend the accommodation to anyone in case they ended up in room 261! i am leaving an overall rating of "poor" for the property, it is a pity there is not a seperate one for staff as that would be excellent!

Room Tip: avoid room 261!!!!!!!
