“Old 2* hotel with Average food quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

The hotel is old, needs to be renovated and get rid of the flies & mosquitoes from the villas. Pillowes need to be replaced as they smell of sweat and odor. The TV didn't work due to no satellite signals and the safe was out of order too. The hotel garden is beautiful with lush greens and staff spend more time in the upkeep of the garden vs maintaining the rooms.

We stayed for one day on the 29th of Dec and for dinner were served a vegetarian buffet and had some beef (with more fat pices) and chicken stripes as a stir fry. Even for breakfest the the selection was very poor. The foot massage at the hotel was excellent and would recommend this to every one at a cost of US$10.0

Overall the staff at the front desk and at the restaurant are pleasant and helpful. We would rate this hotel as a 2* resort

When we arrived despite booking four months in advance, our booking was not there. We sent e-mail 15 days prior to our arirval to Hotle directly and still room was not available. They put us in other ordinary hotel and offer Free Dinner. When we arrievd at Hotle looking at Security Guards at gate, big security walls and jsut adjourned to railway line, we noticed something was wrong as why not only this hotel but hotel's next to it also big security and while having breakfast, we heard many were complaining about the train noise. Not safe to walk outsdie the hotel. It's like a Hotel in a jail

The hotel is very green, a lot of palms on the territory, also a lot of animals - big varans and small lizards, small creatures smth between squirrels and chipmunk, a lot of birds. But also beware of insects - cockroaches can be found un the cupboards, also small ants, flies are everywhere (a common problem on Sri Lanka), you cannot eat in the daytime without ventilator, they will eat you lunch:-). Some mosquitos also - but not that agressive as flies.

They have an open tennis court and for a small pay they will give you rockets and balls. It's not "right' court, but you can play ok, we enjoyed.

Hotel has about 50 rooms and several mini-villas. The rooms are ok, cleaning is very good.
the breakfast is a bit poor, practically no cheese. Dinner is ok, but the most tasty things are very hot and spicy. Meat is not very good, hard to chew, seafood is rare. Some fruits but not big variety.

The personnel is nice, but be prepared that Hibiscus is often overbooked and they can send you for a day or two to a similar hotel, also, as I heard they have problems with rooms for 3 with extra bed, because of overbooking also.

The wine in the hotel is extremely expensive, better buy in duty-free. Local rum is okay, they don't know how to make cocktails, but Cubalibre is quite decent and cheap. Beer I didn't like, but all the tourists drink.

We went to Sri-Lanka in the end of september 2011 and stayed in Hibiskus for almost 2 weeks. The hotel isn't new but nevertheless it looks neat and nice, a lot of trees and palms, everything looks so green. There are a lot of chipmunks and we fed them with cashew nuts everyday). Furniture and designs of alll the rooms are not up-to-date but everything is tidy and is cleaned very well on the daily basis. Food was different and delicious, every night there are different singers and bands playing live music.
What is for sightseeings, we didn't go to excursions with our hotel guide (though we only saw him once when he took us to our hotel), we went to 2 day tour to Kandy/Sigiriya with the beach boy Dammika. He speaks English, German and some Russian. His prices are very reasonable and it cost us much more cheaper to go with him though there were only two of us and we felt so much comfortable because we didn't depend on anyone but ourselves, he provided a large comfortable car. This excursion was very good and interesting, we rode elephant, went to the elephant orphanage where we saw elephants took baths, went to the tea factory, botanical garden, Kandy dancing, a lot of buddhist temples...I wouldn't even remember everything we saw. Also the hotel in Kandy we stayed was very nice one, it was one of family owned small mountain hotels. I would highly recommend to visit Kandy and Sigiriya, it's unforgettable experience and it's a very good opportunity to see the real Sri-Lanka. The only problem we had was to withdraw money from the local ATMs so try to take more cash with you. The problem was that we didn't had enough cash to pay for our trip to Damikka, we were very nervous because the next day after the trip was our last and we had to get money to pay for excursion. So Damikka took us to Colombo where we called our bank and got the money. Also in the first week of our vacation he took us to Colombo where we spent the whole day doing shopping and it cost only 3500 ruppees (like 30 $) while hotel guide will sell you such service for 70 or 80 $. So we would strongly recommend to meet Damikka at the hotel beach and go with him to trips. We liked Sri-Lanka very much and Hibiskus hotel made our vacation pleasant too.

We (2 couples / families) visited Srilanka in August 2011. Our last destination was the beach & we chose Kalutara. We booked two double occupancy standard suite at the Hibiscus. We were given rooms at the ground level.. facing the swimming pool.

The facilities were good & food was just above average. - Not the best food I have had in Sri Lanka.

Hibiscus has 2 swimming pools & a third kids / baby swimming pool.
Lots of trees & big lawns around. My son who is over 2 years enjoyed running around in the grass & playing in the toddler pool.

A nice place to relax & unwind.

The staff are very courteous and responsive.

The Room had the standard amenities.

We faced an issue with the air conditioner in one of the rooms, on informing them - they tried to set it right but struggled for a while. In half hour they offered another room next to it - this one had no problems.

Overall I would surely recommend to stay at this place.

BEWARE - This hotel is horrific. Everything is a lie that you see. The photos are not relevant they must of been taken 20 years ago - so much so I did not recognise this hotel as the one we stayed in. We went for a romantic break and hated every minute.

The rooms - are a disgrace and you would never want to stay there. The hotel is so run down and everything is old and rotten. Even the bed side lamps were so old and rusty that the rust had eaten away the lamp shade so it had huge holes in it. The bathroom was unbearable.
Everything was musky and old and needs to be knocked down and started again.
I ended up with extremely serious food poising. After the most scary bout of food poising where i has to spend the best part of 3 days in the bathroom we discovered the reason for the illness. When we brought bottled water from the hotel the seal was not always new. We only realised after a few days when i was not getting any better, that the hotel was refilling the bottles with tap water.
As the room was so awful - we complained to the hotel. After much effort when they could see I was in such a terrible way they agreed to move us to their best "suite". This was one of the villa rooms. They assured us it would be clean and better standard.
When we moved (we were only staying 5 days in total) to the new room on the 3rd day we found it too to be dirty. Underneath my pillow was a dead Cockroach! Although the room was a better standard - its was still old and the air conditioning unit did not work.
I was so severely ill finally I was able to get a Doctor to the hotel who said I needed to be taken to hospital. My body was shutting down, i was extremely cold and my body shaking. I was told when back in the UK by my doctor that this was extremely dangerous. After hours spent at the hospital on drips and all sorts of medication, hours waiting for a tuk tuk to get us home - I just wanted to leave the hotel. We had had enough and my partner was also feeling ill from the water too.
At the hospital we asked the doctor for a medical report in case we decided to claim on our insurance. The doctor wrote "food poising".
When we returned to the hotel we said we wanted to leave 1 day early and wanted to fly home. We showed the manager the medical certificate - which he said was a lie!! He called the doctor (small town and everyone knows each other) and made the doctor tell me it was not food posing. The manager said he would not let us leave early - that we had to pay for the 1 night we were not going to be there for - and if we wrote anything on trip advisor he would tell everyone we FORGED a medical certificate and that was a criminal act! He would also close the gates and security would not let us out until we paid.
This hotel is a disgrace. The hotel rating and photos do not reflect the facilities at all. You will be shocked as we were if you go. The hotel is just geared up to take money from foreigners and everyone should be WARNED about going there. You take your welfare into your own hands going there. I would advise NEVER going, unless you want to be ill and waste your money. It may be cheaper than other hotels but it is not worth going at all. We took this hotel as it was a bank holiday and the only one we could get at short notice. This was a mistake.
We managed to get out of this hell hole of a hotel and for our last day checked into the Hilton - where we were very happy at the Hilton with international standards and proper bottled water.

we had our safe broken into and credit cards stolen.
2 weeks later 10,000 CHF in charges at a jewerly shop
Funny how the owner of the jewerly shop at the hotel lived at the hotel and watched TV in the lounge area every night scoping out the guests....Just saying.

And the agrro beach ooys fighting over eachother for business.

ANU....you real read about him on other posts too. Aufpassen....Be careful...Pay a little more and stay somewhere nicer.
