“Nice and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

This is a very good hotel. Big comfortable rooms, a nice view and a pleasant balconny. Very good facilities and good food.
Only downside is the passing train which sometimes wakes you up early in the morning.

Room Tip: Reserve a room as far as possible from the traintracks

We visited this hotel April 2013. This was our first visit to Sri Lanka, we usually opt for
Gambia.
We have stayed in many five star hotels and not recieved the hospitality we recieved at the Royal Palms. The staff were very professional and helpful at all times. The food what can I say! It was lovely, different themed evenings, and the breakfast was amazing. We stayed all inclusive, it was worth every penny. We will be going back in February and really looking forward to it.

A disappointing hotel for us as we like to eat outside in the heat, preferably a beach a la carte restaurant and not in a canteen type air conditioned buffet restaurant. There is no beach bar and stepping onto the beach is something you would only attempt once, it's just too much hassle, The all inclusive wine ( one glass with lunch) was dreadful and the entertainment was all inside an air conditioned room and not very good definitely not 5*

Like others, I cannot understand why this hotel get's such good reviews.
I stayed here for a week in May, whilst the holiday was enjoyable, I certainly did not feel that the hotel was anything to particularly shout about.
Things did not get off to a very good start when I arrived. Some sort of manager sat me down and instantly put a green plastic wrist band on my arm. This indicated I was part of the "all inclusive gang" and had to be worn for my entire stay! He then proceeded to take me to my room and explicitly explained what was and was not included in the all inclusive package, including the mini bar. This did not leave me with a very good first impression.
My room itself was reasonably appointed with a nice balcony and lots of space. Air Conditioning was good and a flat screen TV with a reasonable selection of channels was available.
Unfortunately the bathroom was not particularly clean - especially the shower area. Frequently I had towels replaced, only to find the new ones dirty or stained.
The pool is huge and very good for children. The swim up bar is basic, but a nice feature. All around the pool are deckchairs and I had no problems finding a free one.
Royal Palms Beach has an onsite restaurant which was quite good - there is a different menu each night. What no one tells you until you ask though, is that there are some "live action" cooking stations just outside on the balcony. The food here is very good - from fresh naan on curry night, to homemade pizza. Avoid the desserts at all costs - they are defrosted pre-packaged gelatinous cakes that are not nice!
The hotel advertises free Wifi, which I could not get to work once on either of my devices. I had to resort to purchasing a voucher from the front desk for the alternative wifi that is available throughout the hotel.
Staff on the whole are very friendly, especially those at the front door and the lady restaurant manager who was lovely.
Understanding exactly what was included in the all inclusive package was very difficult and confusing. Despite wearing your bright green wristband, staff insist that you sign for free drinks - even bottled mineral water.
One thing that you should note - once you leave this hotel, either by the front gates or onto the beach, you will find yourself besieged by some locals, who will do their very best to tempt you to their restaurant, buy a sari or take a day trip with them. This got quite frustrating after a while - I had experienced this in other parts of the world, but nothing on the scale of Kalutara.
I don't think I will return to this hotel.

I had eight nights at this hotel, not long enough. I arrived on the 23 March 2013,
I had requested a sea view on an upper floor witch I did get and it was very clean
and comfy but a bit tired, this I was aware of so not a problem some of the rooms
have been refurbished but I wanted an older room (they have baths) the new rooms
have showers,
The food in the buffet restaurant was very good the curries are excellent but the pasta dishes
"hmm" not quite right, The staff were very polite and friendly,
Some guests are A inclusive I was half board so most of the people in the bar are A inclusive,
Everybody else go to a beach bar, The lobby bar was never full and the entertainment was
very good,
The pool was quite large it was in two sections joint by a tunnel witch makes for a good
swim and there was plenty of space for sunbathing but a shortage of loungers ,
The train runs past the hotel it was right at the back of my room but not a problem
they don't run to often,
TIPPING Some people are wondering about this EASEY $10 taxi from airport
cleaner 100rp a day everyone else 100rp they all seemed happy.

We travelled to the royal palms on the 1st may 2013. The hotel is fantastic. The pool is amazing. Especially if you have kids. The depth of the pool is waist height most of the way round then has a deep end near the end. It has a built in jacuzzi. The animation team is fantastic. The pool attendants very friendly. The food in the restaurant is unbelievable. We didn't have one bad meal. To much to choose from. The restaurant staff where very friendly and always made us welcome.
We travelled on a few trips and used the local guy called reshni. He was great. Nothing was to much trouble for himself he even invited us back to his home to meet his family and his mother cooked us a lovely meal. And we had a bottle of there local spirit Arrack
You can find reshni on Facebook reshni tours. His tours are very cheap but of excellent value.

A tip if it's your first time. The brochure says 1 hour from airport. It is actually 3. And that's on a good day.

Cant wait to return to Sri Lanka. And wouldn't hesitate to go back to royal palms it's fantastic.

Room Tip: Ask for the block of rooms that have already been refurbished

It is nice and relaxing to go to bed and wake up to the sound of the waves (no .. not a CD..!!). The hotel is spacious, clean, staff were welcoming and friendly, room had air con, comfortable, clean and a great view over the pool and beach. The pool was large and well maintained with sufficient sunbeds. A short walk through the garden brought you onto the beach which was clean and although the sea was quite rough it was still a nice blue.
Food was of a buffet style at breakfast and dinner. The selection was good and all cooked and tasted fresh. There was a section where the chef cooked dishes for you - the omelettes were fantastic. The dishes I liked were the dhal, fresh papaya and pineapple, and the salads.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the beach and pool
