“Nice and quite place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

We stayed in Morgan's Guest House for one night in our visit to Jaffna. It consists of the basic things which need to have a comfortable stay. If you are not willing to pay high for a room with decent facilities , I recommended this place. The take carers (Maria and Lawrence) are friendly and helpful. There is very limited parking facility at this place. somehow we parked our SUVs within the premises. This place is located near the Nallur Kovil (75m from Kovil) and 3-4 Km away from the Jaffna town.

The location is not really good, but the room is clear and tidy. I arrived in Jaffna about 7:30pm, I walked in Morgan's and luckily they had room available. The room is tidy and clear. The manager's English is good and arranged a tuktuk for me going into the town to buy dinner, help me booked a van to go to Kandy. She's very nice, making cups of tea, taking photos for us. She even sent me a handmade ship as a gift! Note that the A/C may turn off itself before 10pm and the water in the bathroom seemed have a little problem. However I still recommend here for the manager's hospitality.

Morgan's Place is a bright, clean guesthouse in a good location and a good value with a mercurial hostess. It's a good location, around the corner from the large temple, several ice-cream shops and Mango's restaurant. We rented the pair of bikes they have to ride into and around town.

We fortunately fell into favor with the hostess, Maria, who is chatty and helpful, but can also be a bit domineering and insistent. She likes to engage with her guests.

We walked in here on a Friday evening looking for a break before dinner and scouting alternatives to the hotel we'd booked. The tables were full -- several groups of expats were relaxing and drinking in a very nice courtyard. Maria and her husband were eager to accommodate us and pulled out a table and some chairs so we could sit. We asked about rooms, and she said she had two available starting the following night.

We stayed in the Angelina Jolie room, which was large and clean and a good deal for Rs 2500. Shower water was not heated, but wasn't cold either. Didn't need A/C with the ceiling fan and the mosquito net.

Maria seemed to take a liking to us talking to us on that first night because we were American, and she said she had a great American boss when she worked at the UN. Over the three days we stayed she had no hesitation complaining to us about how owner treated her, about having to cook breakfast for some demanding guests, and telling us how she didn't like "Sinhala people" staying there.

We got along fine with her, but still we could see why some have commented that she's hard to deal with and a little too interested in making a buck. The way she answered questions about the cost of various services, like the bike rental, made me believe prices can fluctuate (but it should be noted that a 10% surcharge on rooms is typical in Jaffna, not an attempt by Maria to gouge guests).

Her husband was in Colombo during most of our stay. He's usually a driver for hire, so they arranged someone else to take us to the islands for the same price. We were happy with the person they chose.

Don't expect breakfast here, or even tea. Mango's is a close walk away, and there are some other small restaurants on the street.

I'd recommend Morgan's given that it's a pleasant refuge and above-average for options in its price range. But given the expected growth of tourism in Jaffna, if I returned I'd look for new alternatives.

Room Tip: The room Angelina Jolie stayed in is spacious and quiet. It's also the room the owner stays in w...

We stayed at Morgen's for two nights in March 2014 during our trip around Sri Lanka. We took an overnight bus to Jaffna which took ten hours and was at times harrowing, so it was amazing to arrive at 7 in the morning and actually find a room here. We'd read it was very popular with NGO's during the war and could be hard to get into, but we got lucky and spent two amazing nights here. Maria and Lawrence are great and give you info but also give you your space. The house was badly damaged in floods in 2008, but the owner, who happened to be there during our stay has done an amazing job restoring it and it's very comfortable with great water pressure and A/C. We organised a tour around Jaffna with Lawrence, which we felt was the best way to take in all the sights. It only cost 6,000 rupees for the whole day, which was a lot better that spending 7 hours in a tuk-tuk going around the Islands. We went out for dinner, but we're able to come back to Morgen's at night and have a couple of beers and just relax. It's like a refuge from the craziness outside.

This accomodation is better know in Jaffna as Maria House, the 4 rooms are always booked from the local ONG workers so will not easy find something available.
The Hotel is a local house well managed from Maria, clean and in order, I should say almost perfect.
Infact the only problem was our room face the street.
Forget a deep sleep. Dogs bark, food seller, motorcycle 24 hours was a nightmare for me otherwise if you can sleep also under a bomb attack this can't be a problem.
Despite this the Guest house is great and very comfortable after one day of visit.

Room Tip: Ask one of the 2 rooms noot face the street

Its a beautiful property, located a little off town- like other people in the forum, we had issues with the host- it felt like she constantly tried to make a quick buck, and in the end, when we were leaving, she arbitrarily demanded for an extra 500 for her "services," even though we'd been there just one night and had really not asked her for very much. That said, it is definitely one of the most comfortable places in jaffna and close to a lot of local sites. Would recommend that you not take any of Maria's offered trips, these are typically more expensive than what arranging something on your own would cost. eg Jaffna to Karainagar, dont pay more than 1200 for travel.

Room Tip: Room with the Patio is beautiful, however for some strange reason, the bathroom window is see throug...

Gorgeous little guest house. We came here for a drink one night by chance and saw the rooms so decided to check in the next night. Maria was funny lady and quite a character! She made us Jaffna crab curry for dinner and it was absolutely delicious. We thought the internet was included in the price but found out when we checked out that it wasn't (not a big deal, it was only 100 rupees extra a day). Apart from that, it was a really pleasant stay.
