“Good location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2010

We stayed here since some of our freinds were already here. The rooms were small and the beds not comfortable. They bathrooms werent that clean and the hotel didn't have any accessories in it - no phone/ TV/ AC. They also didnt have a good selection of food from the restaurant and the service was very poor.
The location of this place is good - its in the center of Hikkaduwa and close to restaurants and a nightclub. I wouldn't recommened anyone staying here unless you have no intenstion of actually staying in your room.

Our friendly tuk tuk driver recommended this hotel where we stayed one night. The pool was kinda milky despite being cleaned each morning. I would not get into it. Our beach front room had a great view of the ocean until the midday sun hit when it was too hot to sit on the balcony. Thin foam mattress was a bit mouldy. Air con weak, fan broken, fridge didn't work and by the time they fixed that we could not be bothered with the broken hot water system. Doors didn't close properly, taps, lights etc rattled and were grubby, worn, broken or just covered in a film of salt. The breakfast was just OK with chipped, broken mismatched china and fruit and juice coming out last. Whatever. Next day we moved next door to the Time and Tide hotel which was the same price US$40 for room with view and B/F and it's brand new. Fantastic bedding, lovely bathroom, fan and aircon. Spic and Span and run by a two brothers, one of whom lived in Sydney's northern beaches for 7 years. They also have a nice wood fired pizza restaurant on the premises. If you get the Nippon Villa for US$15-20 per night it may be worth it but otherwise give it a miss.

I was the only guest in the hotel and so I got a good deal on the best room in the place - a large ocean front room with balcony over looking the pool, the beach and the sea. Because it is so close to the sea, everything has a film of salt water on it and feels damp. This means all the wood work rots very quickly and the hotel looks in a state of disrepair. There is not much service so to speak.
The pool is tiny and the water looks a little murky, so I didn't try it, but to be honest with the beautiful sea right at your doorstep, I didn't miss it.
If you are looking to bring someone back to your room, forget it, the hotel staff won't let you. This is apparently because of a recent robbery in the hotel by some strangers who were invited to a guest's room. I would not stay here again

Being a fussy traveller, I insisted we were shown rooms before agreeing to stay at this hotel. I like my starch white linen and cosy clean towels too much to accept second best! I was extremely pleased to be shown ‘best room in house’. A huge four-poster bed enrobed in nets, Air-conditioning and ceiling fan, large bathroom with shower, TV, mini-bar etc and the impressive chaise-lounge. The deal-maker came when he opened the rear door to reveal a large balcony overlooking the soon to be sun-setting ocean. Unbelievably the cost was only $35US for the room including brekkie. Mrs Fusspot was satisfied!
We went for a swim in an adequate pool, in need of a little bit of renovation around the shower area, but overlooking the beautiful if rather narrow beach. The result of this is that at high tide it is difficult to navigate a walk along the beach and the handful of sun-beds were crammed into a small area. It didn’t matter- the view from our balcony was right over the sea with many green turtles swimming in the coral reef below. This really was a highlight of the holiday with the stunningly beautiful sunset making for a lovely romantic evening.
The hotel served an evening meal if required but we chose to eat at one of the many restaurants that line the main road that runs alongside the beach at Hikkaduwa. Hikka probably had the best range of facilities and restaurants of any place on our stay in Sri Lanka, with the added attraction of an glass bottomed boat to see coral and brightly coloured fishes.
Breakfast was fine-fruit, toast, omelette, fruit juice and coffee or tea. Mr fusspot was not quite finished and asked for some extra toast- the staff obviously found this a strange English eccentricity but complied, returning minutes later with some tomato ketchup! This hotel was cheap and very cheerful, could do with a little make-over in parts, but we loved it!
We gave this a 5- in truth this hotel is nearer to a 3 or 4 but If you get that balcony room then you too will have little choice but to mark shaply upwards - for us not just best room in hotel but best room in the whole of Sri Lanka.
