“Good curries & amazing naan bread!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Good curries and probably the best naan bread we’ve ever tasted. A bit more expensive than the average restaurant in Hikkaduwa, but totally worth it. There’s a nice garden behind the restaurant that fits around 20 people – so don’t be fooled by the small size of the place when viewed from the street. Also as for the location we did not find this to be far at all (located across our hotel Coral Rock by Amaya, Galle Road 340). We warmly recommend it!

“Aromagic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

5 stars all the way.
Best stopover at Hikkaduwa.
On a busy day finding space and getting food could be a challenge is my guess.

We were keen to visit Aroma after reading all the wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor. And we were not disappointed at all. The place is tiny (barely 5 tables) ..right on Galle Road. We missed it the first time we passed by and had to ask our way around.

We had heard a lot about their mango recipes but they were not in season so settled for papaya shake instead, which was still good. And we had fried calamari for starters. Batter coated deep fried. My husband specifically asked for it to be coated in Sri Lankan spices which is something you can also do for the taste to be authentic. . Some of the restaurants otherwise tend to make the food European palate friendly which can be bland by South Asian standards.

Main course. . Well waiting for the mains was a pleasure in itself with the tongue tickling aromas wafting through the room. It took its time coming but we found it worth the wait as it was then that we tasted the best Sri Lankan curries. I found the fish curry better than the prawns one. But the spices were just right. It was different from regular Indian curries but the similarity was also apparent. The chef mentioned that he was influenced by India in his quest for the best curry recipes. But I feel it was definitely his quintessential flavouring or twist of taste that made the curries stand out.

We couldn't manage any space for dessert though I could have still made an exception had they served mango pancakes. Sadly that was not to be.

After a light banter with the owner cum chef (an ex sailor) and thanking him profusely for a great meal, we left the little Aroma that was going to leave a long trail in our food memories!

“no 1 out of all hikkaduwa restaurants?? i very much doubt it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

set vegetarian curry menu unimpressive lacking flavour - except aubergine. chicken curry - tiny portion, chicken meat chewy. prawn masala average again, tiny plate. 600rs for the portion of plain naan?? 200rs for a bottle of water?? i think its time to climb down from the clouds and start again.

“Lovely meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

After researching trip advisor we found this restaurant and decided to travel the half hour in a tuk tuk to sample the food. we were not disappointed. as it was early we were the only customers. We has the local sri lankan vegetable curry which consisted of a dahl, pumpkin curry and one other. the pumpkin curry was out of this world. the owner then came and spoke to us and we told him how far we had travelled to sample his food. he was very friendly and made us feel welcome and even went back to the kitchen to get us a second helping. the food really is top notch and worth every ruppee
