“Architectural beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2011

If you want a trip to a natural wonderland but still stay in the lap of luxury, this is the place to stay. Before traveling to Sri Lanka I had been told how this hotel has a "Green" philosophy, energy conservation, renewable energy, programs supporting local flora and fauna. I was a bit skeptical at how a hotel could maintain all of these aspects but still be 5 stars but hopeful that people were making an effort to preserve the beauty and natural bounty of Sri Lanka. I was more than pleasantly surprised when we arrived there. The first thing you will notice about this hotel is how it seems to blend with the rainforest, it doesn't cut a swath but seems to grow out of the hillside. The stunning views, abundant flora and fauna stop you in your tracks at every turn. The architecture of the hotel is very unique, it honors Sri Lankan myths and stories, carved snakes, owls and metal work abound. The food is excellent, service fast and friendly. The views of the lake from the eating area is down right meditative in nature. Do expect to be ether walking or taking drives to other local areas, this is a rural rainforest habitat and good portion of the roads are packed dirt. Be aware that wildlife is everywhere on the grounds and a few brave creatures might come near your balcony, such as birds, monkeys, skinks and geckos.

We visited Kandalama while working on a project for Animal Venom Research International. One of the most amazing hotels I’ve ever stayed in. Fantastic location, it literally feels like the hotel is part of the natural surroundings complimented by the vision of internationally renowned architect Geoffry Bawa! If you want the rural exotic experience, without sacrificing the comfort, this is the place for you.

Expect to have up-close encounters with the local wildlife, monkeys right up to the windows, geckos, etc. But this is what the eco-experience is all about right! I would definitely stay there again, the service and everything was impeccable.

Working on my Doctorate in public health, I’ve traveled to many a remote place- Guyana, South America, Costa Rica. It’s difficult to find a location like this that can combine the best of rural natural beauty and the high standards of a luxury resort.

I just can't get over the exotic beauty of the Hotel. The reception we got from the time we arrived there was friendly. and the rooms were beautifully made up. The food was great with so many dishes to choose from. I've got to say that the action stations were fantastic - the chefs were friendly too.
Food factor was the highlight for me. Apart from the breathtaking scenery. Thank you for the hospitality.

By far and away the coolest hotel we had ever seen, let alone stayed in!

The hotel entrance is through a corridor, which is made up on one side from the rock outcrop on which the hotel is built. The whole hotel (which is pretty big) dissapears into the jungle in which it stands, with great views out over the lake and onto Sigiriya from nearly everywhere.

Our room on the 5th floor was massive, with huge jacuzzi bath and a balcony with a great view, where we ate breakfast. We also tried both the hotels restaurants, where the food was good, although not as good as other places we visited in Sri Lanka.

As well as visiting Sigiriya and Dambulla, which are both close by, we went on an early morning bird spotting walk around the lake and grounds, which was really good. We also enjoyed lounging in the hotel pools, with their amazing setting and views.

We had an amazing stay and hope to go back there soon

Most beautiful & unusual hotels I've ever been with my family. Mr. Geoffrey Bawa's design of the six storey hotel with it's landscaping reveals the serene view of the Kandalama tank & the Sigiriya rock fortress (the world heritage site) in the distance, making it very very spectacular and architecture at it's best!!! This hotel is built into a mountain and the scenery is glorious.
We had a suite which consisted of two separate spacious rooms. The bathrooms with the jacuzzies were the best features. The glass panelling right around interacts with nature & wild life. Rooms were very clean and all amenities were in working condition.
Monkeys run around swaying in the trees and different bird chirpings would certainly make you enjoy your stay.
The food presentations are outstanding and perfectly blends with the themes. Food was really tasty and appealing.
Staff are well trained, warm & hospitable. The eco friendly concept is a marvel and adds so much beauty & value to this property. Keep up the good work & may the management & team move forward from strength to strength!!

This is a beautiful hotel in an amazing location with wonderful wildlife. We really enjoyed seeing all the monkeys running around the grass and swinging in the trees. Be prepared to live among the many, many bugs in the area. It is inevitable to have a few spending the night with you in your room. It's fine though. The only negative is the location of our room. I highly recommend requesting a room on an upper floor. Our room was on the second floor, room 216, and since the shower is completely glass, there were people on the grass in front of my shower......not enjoyable! Apparently, according to the management, people should not have been in that area, however, it was a tour group and they were there and i was not happy to see them as I was in the shower. The food here is fantastic and we even were lucky enough to witness a fantastic cultural show one evening with local dancers and fire eaters.......it was fantastic. You will enjoy your stay if you book this hotel!

Room Tip: Definitely request higher floors so people can not see you in the shower!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The hotel is a staggering 1km from end to end, and rises up seven floors, yet appears to be a perfectly natural extension of the mountainside. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool. However, while focusing on highlighting its enchanting natural surroundings, our luxury resort in Sri Lanka gives priority to providing its guests with the finest comforts and service. ... more   less
