“Scenic and peaceful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

Interesting history and buildings, and superb views. Lots of stairs though! Serene place, easily accessed by local bus. Look out for the giant squirrels!

“The cradle of Buddhism”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

It is said that Buddhism was introduced in Sri Lanka in Mihintale. We found it well worth the short trip from Anuradhapura and a great addition to the sites there. The site is well kept and people still come there to pray. There is also a tiny Hindu shrine entwining Sri Lankan Buddhism with Hinduism. There is some climbing steps involved but it is an easy climb. From the top of the rock you have a beautiful view over the country side.

The place has lots of history and we were happy we took one of the guides waiting on the parking lot. Check if they have a good level of English before you leave. We asked our guide to tell us stuff that was not in our book and he really delivered!

“Sacred, serene”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Mihintale is internationally recognized as one of Sri Lanka's most sacred sites, and we went here particularly to spend time in meditation. Buddhism was introduced here by the Arahat Mahinda around 3000 BCE.

I and my daughter went early in the morning, and were pleased that unlike the other sites we visited, there were no touts or vendors crowding the entrance. Later we learned that the current chief monk Ven. Dhammarathana Thero was making efforts to preserve the sanctity of the place.

The beautiful views from the lookout resonated with peace and tranquility, as did the areas around the caves where the Arahats in the past meditated. We saw a variety of birds, several monkeys and some squirrels. There were no mosquitoes at all. The place was quite clean.

It was a joy to meditate here and enjoy the powerful, sacred energy of the place.

Crystal enthusiasts like us would also be delighted to see the very large scepter-shaped quartz terminator that used to be on top of the dagoba. This was hit by lightning in April 2010, and is now in Mihintale's relic room.

Mihintale has the unique distinction of being the only religious site in the world with 2 dagobas, the Ambasthale dagoba which was built on the site where Mahinda met the king, and the other on the mountain behind it.

Mihintale is about 30 minutes away from Anuradhapura, and is about a 5 minute tuktuk ride away from the town center. Definitely worth a visit.
