“Perfect place for Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

We found that staying at Fafa Island Resort was perfect for our honeymoon. It was peaceful, private, and the staff were very friendly and easygoing. The fale we stayed in was excellent, and it was the perfect place to kick back, relax, and take a break from technology. The food was great, using fresh local produce and they have a Tongan feast night once a week which is well worth the fee, and has a display of local dancing at the end of the feast.

While I kicked back in the hammock with a book from their small library, my husband ended up kayaking and swimming in the warm water. We were very lucky with the whale swim, it was the highlight of our stay. We were in safe hands with the local Fafa resort tourist guides who were very professional and knowledgeable.

The island is a bird watcher's paradise if you are into that as well, please note that the birds can get a bit loud at night which can make it a little hard to sleep if you're not used to it (bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper).

It's also the perfect place for star gazing, I've never seen so many stars in the sky in my life : ) It's just gorgeous.

We would happily go there again, and would happily recommend it for anyone who needs to kick back and relax.

My husband and I spent 7 days on this beautiful island. We actually had our wedding ceremony on Fafa it was very special as both our backgrounds are Tongan. It was the most beautiful day in my whole life! Made perfect by the staff and weather. When we arrived on fafa at midnight I knew even In the dark we were in paradise! Seeing the silhouette of the palm trees against the moonlit night was the beginning of the best 7 days ever. The island is Eco friendly and I am environmentally aware so this Is the perfect spot for me. We didn't see a tv for the time we stayed there but we didn't even notice! Day trips to the main island was part of the fun and we learnt quickly that buying our supplies from the main island was better on the wallet than to purchase any meals from the restaurant. Also we were able to see and appreciate the Tongan people and culture. The people are humble and so welcoming so lovely. We also had a portable grill so we had a variety of meals. The BBQ and show night was a hit with us and the other guests. If you are looking for a true paradise where you have yr own bungalow and beach you should book fafa ASAP. Hawaii does not compare. I need to give a shout out to the Tongan staff on fafa who were so kind to us and made us feel welcome always. I just hope they are taken care of by the owners of Fafa. If you can tip them any amount you know they will appreciate it. There was only 1 hiccup where the transfer amounts weren't explained to my guests properly that were travelling from the main island. Rather management waited to bill me the amount at the end. Just ensure you find out all the prices of everything because you don't want to be annoyed or surprised. Other than that everything was perfect! Go on spoil yourself before everyone finds out about this hidden treasure!

My husband and I spent 2 glorious nights on Fafa and it was all we could hope for. Firstly lets remember that we are talking about a small Island in a developing Nation that needs to import just about everything (other than Seafood) from other places, so if you first choice of Beer of Wine is not available there is always an alternative! The food was delicious although serves were a little on the small size! There was very little to eat between meals so if you think you may want to snack do a bit of shopping before you get on the boat to go to Fafa. The Fales are gorgeous exactly what you would expect on a tropical island, although it did take a little while to get used to the outside bathroom! We loved the Hurricane lantern that was delivered at dusk and the thermos of hot water in the morning ready for our first cuppa and we never missed phones and TV's or noisy air conditioning. We both enjoyed Fafa and can't wait to return for a longer stay and have already recommended it to other friends who enjoy eco styled accommodation and privacy.

My husband and I have just returned from a week staying on Fafa Island - we went to celebrate his 60th birthday quietly! It was an ideal location for a very quiet holiday break - no phones, air conditioning, radios, TV in our fale. Wifi is available free of charge at the restaurant however. The other guests were very respectful of one's privacy and space - the few children who were with their parents were very quiet and well behaved. There is no children's club and really it isn't set up for kids activities at all. The island is really well vegetated and yet well maintained around the fales. There are lots of birds such as Banded Rails, Purple Swamp Hens, Kingfishers, large Kiki parrots and other smaller species. Fish in the ocean can be hand fed with the left over breakfast toast right from your table! The island is also home to fruit bats and lots of small lizards and geckos. Crabs also come out at night sometimes on the pathways. The staff are relaxed, courteous, happy and helpful - the food is delicious - so much fresh fruit and fish! The fales are very generous in size and interesting in their design. The outdoor bathroom was delightful - there is nothing quite like showering in the garden. We went whale watching on one day and saw lots of humpbacks at very close range - they were breaching right in front of our boat and mothers and calves were playing together while the male escorts kept a close eye on them. The snorkelling was great even close to the beach and all the equipment was supplied. We also enjoyed paddle boarding as the waters close to the island are quite safe and navigable. We would highly recommend this island resort to anyone looking for a quiet, eco-friendly holiday break in a delightful atmosphere.

Room Tip: We started our holiday in a 4 bedroom fale (there were only 2 of us) and then moved on day 3 into th...

What a fantastic little island that certainly over delivered on our expectations. Perhaps tonga has not sold its soul to the "cater for the masses" part of tourisum and perhaps that is what makes it a little unique. Fafa fell into that "thanks for leaving us alone" thing that we maybe wern't aware we needed. If you want something then dont bother calling room service or expecting a staff member to wander the beach asking if yoy need anything, why?, because they leave you alone, they give you your space and they give you your privacy. The staff are fantastic, they will meet your needs, they will adapt and acommodate for your needs, just go to their space so they dont have to invade yours. Accomodation, beautiful, simple and so private with beach access by the way.The local bird life will wake you early in the morning but chances are you went to bed early and they are just getting your day started for you (you could try ear plugs). Food, great, with a new menu every night all with enough choice. If you want a holiday with parties, jet skis, tv or even a phone in your room etc then dont go to Fafa. If you want a place to reconnect with your partner, spend quality time with friends, perhaps do a bit of snorkling amongst the coral or paddle a kayak, read a book, get a tan and get some privacy GO TO FAFA.

Room Tip: All fales are good and each one is different. We stayed in the fale called Fau which was great.

Had a day trip in Fafa Island. Here is the resume of the day.

PROs:
- Very good food
- Very nice and friendly staff
- Lovely cosy bar

CONs:
- Apparently you can just stay in 1 beach of the Island, so why would you have to go on a little Island if you can't go around it?
- The beach is nice but access to the water is very difficult if you are not a good swimmer.
- There was a psychopathic American guest (thanks God I have a lot of American friends so I know you are not all like this one!!) who was complaining about everything (including people smoking in the smoking area), which made up the story about me and my friend getting into his bungalow (???), then he begun to scream against us on the beach. As soon as we saw the manager coming over we were honestly expecting an apology for this really unpleasant and rude guest, but without even asking what happened she said that as he was a guest which had already been staying on that Island before, then he was right. This is absurd, and we felt really disgusted from all the show which came out from that situation.

I would never ever recommend this resort to anyone, as I think anyone would like to be labelled as a Class A, B or C customer.

Room Tip: Just choose another Island. They apparently don't bother if rude customers scream against women.

My husband and I recently spent our last 5 nights of our Tongan holiday on Fafa, what a way to finish! Tropical paradise! Beautiful, environmentally friendly accommodation in very private 'fales', complete with wonderful outdoor bathrooms, fascinating bird life, and a view from the bed out the front door through a private 'tunnel' of lush tropical vegetation to our own private piece of beach. It doesn't get any better than this.
All the staff were delightful, helpful, informative and fun loving, there when you needed them, but in no way intrusive. The food was amazing, beautiful and fresh, and the chef was very accommodating for my husband who cannot eat any seafood at all (often a real challenge but not on Fafa, despite it's remoteness!)
The snorkelling off the beach was fabulous, a gentle kayak around the whole island takes about 30 minutes, or grab a book from the library and relax in the hammock. Couldn't have asked for more!
Happy to recommend this to anyone wanting to TOTALLY relax in a tropical paradise. Keep up the fabulous work Brigette, Claudia and Vince!
