On the positive side, the traditional fales are beautifully constructed and the gardens well kept. The food is good too and reasonably priced and the excursions are good.
The Tongan staff were very friendly and helpful but I thought the (foreign) management, apart from a superficial welcome, made me feel like I was gatecrashing an exclusive house party.
Unfortunately one of the Fijian staff made it very obvious that he didn't like the English due to our colonial past which if I had been in Fiji would have been fair enough!
I also thought it was overpriced.
I preferred everywhere else that I stayed in Tongatapu and Eua for a genuine Tongan welcome and experience.

Room Tip: Would recommend family fale for a group. Would not recomend single fale for single female as fales a...

Just returned from 7 days on Fafa island with 2 girlfriends. All of us had a great time - the staff could not be more friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. The food was great and the accommodation fantastic, beds extremely comfortable. Snorkelling is safe, well protected and the whale watching was terrific. Unfortunately the day we went out to swim with the whales it was very rough, making it hard to sight the whales when you were in the water and we drifted very quickly from the boat but the guide was very mindful of this and kept a close eye on all of us. Highly recommend this resort for honeymooners!

My second visit to Fafa Island (Sep 2010 and Sep 2012) and the quality has not diminished. Second time around only reinforced that Fafa Island management and staff provide the ideal combination of laid back comfort and professional service, with a setting to loose yourself in.

This idillic resort is very close to nature: beautiful beaches, open air rooms set in manicured gardens, parrots in the palm trees, and bats gliding through the night air. Warning, the sound of humpback whales can wake your afternoon siesta on the beach, and geckos (small lizards) can visit your rooms at night. If you prefer a sanitized concrete resort with a pool, this is not the place for you.

Make the most of the services provided by the resort; snorkel excursions, whale watching and island hopping trips. The staff can also arrange fishing and dive trips which can be helpful given their local knowledge.

The German management are extremely professional, but leave the front of house activities to local Tonga and Fijian staff. A delightful combination of smiles, genuine hospitality and efficiency.

Food is simple, clean, european/island fusion. The evening menu always features seafood/fish, along with more traditional european inspired meats or pastas. All the food is fresh and locally sourced. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of the food.

Step off the boat and embrace the charm of Fafa Island. It would be difficult to be disappointed!

Booked Fafa Island Resort for 7 days. We could not fault it in anyway. The setting, the accommodation, the staff, the managers and the FOOD was just amazing. Thank you for a fantastic week we will be back.

We've just come back from another 10 days in paradise. This was my 3rd visit to Fafa Island, and I only have positive comments to make. If you want to have a completely relaxing and uninterrupted holiday, then Fafa Island is the place. Once you step off the boat, the feeling of relaxation overwhelms you. Its a tough decision to make between swimming, snorkling, kayaking or just lazying around reading books in the sun.
The staff are fantastic, and really know how to look after you, the food is great, exactly what I expect from an eco-friendly lodge that is doing its best to limit waste of resources. Why have more than 3 choices of meals, when there are only 13 fales on the island? The food is fresh and full of flavour, with a delightful taste of the Pacific.
Then there's those pesky whales that keep swimming past the island, so I only have to raise my head from the sand to catch them playing off the reef. The island itself has a wonderful collection of wildlife, from the cute gecko's in your rooms, to the colourful parrots and highly amusing Pukeko's and Weka's constantly chasing each other around.
The fales are amazing, they are beautifully appointed, built in the traditional way, to minimise any use of unsustainable practises.
Fafa Island is all I need for a tropical holiday.

My wife and i stayed at FaFa Island for 6 nights in mid August 2012. This was our first visit to Tonga having already visited Fiji, Cook Islands and Samoa and we were keen to see how the snorkeling was here.
The staff and owners were very friendly and accommodating and would do their utmost to help out should you need anything or have any questions.
The fale we stayed in (Sunset) was very private (and in our opinion has the best location), with beach access, hammock and outdoor furniture overlooking the clear blue water. Inside is a very comfy bed complete with reading lights (lightswitch just above headboard area) and mosquito net (we had no mozzy issues) chairs and table. Spare single bed in another room and finally the toilet/shower situated outside... which we absolutely loved! completely private yet outside in a garden type setting. This is where the only power socket can be found and the power (except the lights) shuts off around 9:30pm - 8am. So do your charging outside of these hours. These units are solar powered (however in the middle of the island is the deisel generators which kick in when required). The fale's themselves are traditional structures and allow gecko's in to feed on any mozzies, a great way to enjoy watching these neat little creatures from the comfort of your own bed! No hair dryer in fale, but there is a fridge/freezer which turns off during the power off times mentioned above.
Activities. . . Snorkeling is best at the northern part of the island and the best times are the few hours either side of high tide, coral is quite good and there is quite a few different species of fish to look at . . .There is tour options which allow you to go snorkeling at a reef or around other small islands in the area (we found the coral and fish to be much better around Malinoa Island (just north of Fafa) and highly recommend this short tour.... One can walk around the island on the shore in a leisurely half hour or cut through the bush on a short track. . . There is also kayaks you can use for free, snorkeling gear for free, volleyball net/area.
Great to see different varieties of birds on the island, especially the Koki parrot. A beautiful green and red bird that you can visit while on your bushwalk.

Our highlight was going on the whale watching tour. An absolute MUST do!! The boat takes you out to where the humpback whales hang out. they are there from July to October. We had no idea that this trip was going to be better than we ever expected. Not only did we view whales from the boat but we got to go and swim with them! You can get up close and personal with these amazing giants of the sea so make sure you take an underwater camera with you! All in all we spent around 45 minutes in the water with them. I cant put it into words how special this trip was. Just awesome to see them come up and check you out.
Food, as mentioned below, is abit on the expensive side and 15% tax will be added to the final bill. Options include fish and meat, however if you want vegetarian or something different then notify staff and they will do their best to meet your needs. We had no problem with the food and staff even went out of their way to provide a birthday cake for me! YAY! cheers team!

Overall, we had a great time on Fafa Island and would definately stay here again! we had no complaints and are looking forward to returning.

Room Tip: book the "sunset" fale if you can, its the most private fale on the island and GO ON THE W...

What an amazing island paradise - my daughter and I went to Fafa Island for 5 days of rest & relaxation on recommendation from a work colleague - I absolutely loved it, the fales were beautiful, the food was basic but good, the staff were particularly friendly and helpful especially when I needed to take my adult daughter back to the mainland to see a doctor, their concern was very much appreciated - neither of us wanted to head back to reality - I could have stayed for at least another week - I will be back
