“Beautiful hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

I stayed here for about a week while in town for a friend's wedding. I had a wonderful experience and was rather spoiled with all of the amenities. The fitness center, sauna, spa, and pool were very delightful. The staff was also quite friendly and very helpful. The only downside was paying for WIFI, which was quite expensive after a 7 night stay. I opted to walk to a nearby cafe, Emma's Cafe (located in the TN English building on the other side of the Convention Center - about a 5 min walk) where they have free WIFI, great espresso, and a variety of breakfast items on their menu that you can't get at the Holiday Inn. There is also a convenience store next to Emma's Cafe which keeps regular hours (the convenience store in the Holiday Inn appeared to only be open when Food & Beverage outlets were closed).

Hotel is much better than what you would expect from a regular Holiday Inn. Breakfast is excellent. Big choice and good taste. Rooms are much better than expected. so is the gym and spa. unfortunaty no free Wifi unless you know the secret code.

As a first time traveler to South Korea I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, amenities, and services at the Holiday Inn Gwangju, Korea. This hotel was every bit as good as the known luxury brand hotels. My room was modern, spacious, very clean, and after the long trip, very quiet. The breakfast buffet rivaled any of the best buffets that I have had at other hotels and the fitness room was aguably the best I have seen at any hotel. The staff were very helpful, friendly and had customer satisfaction completely top of mind. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: My room was on the ninth floor and was very, very quiet.

Stayed for a conference here, which makes the hotel very convenient. The convention center is opposite. The town center or any place you would like to visit in the evenings are a bit further away, definetly not walking distance. By subway, which is 500 m down the road, it still takes around 8 stops.
That said, the hotel itself is very nice, the rooms are big enough and the breakfast is the best I have had in Korea. A huge buffet with selections of Dim Sum, various Asian hot dishes, and even something like German bread. Was included in my room rate and its worth it.
Their gym is also one of the best I have seen in a hotel. Sufficient amounts of cardio equipment makes you relaxed about showing up a few minutes later than 06:00 in the morning.
The drawback is, as another reviewer mentioned, the airconditioning. The windows cant be opened, and for whatever reason, the room heats up like a pressure cooker. Setting the aircon to cool in November is not my idea of energy saving, but its self defense. Give it an hour, and the whole thing turns into a pressure cooker again, with aircon set to the lowest temperature already. Disturbed my sleep considerably.

Room Tip: Take the even numbered rooms, nicer view.

why is it i dislike coreak hotels in the winter ? their "advanced" airco/heating systems!!!

for the second night in a row i woke up bathing in sweat because the airco somewhere in the middle of the night decides to stop.... after the first night like that i asked the fornt desk about it and engineering staff switched it back on.

evidently this did not prevent the same thing to happen again the second night.... they seem to like to sleep in 27 degree bedrooms..... i dont

but the claim made by me on this second night did not seem to have any effect sofar since now for the last three hours (and three phone calls) the temperature stayed above 24.5 deg C .....why cant i open a window!!!!

for the rest hotel room is basic but ok, hotel location is not nice, no shop, bar or anything in sight, just the conference centre. extremely boring.....

Dear jan f,

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to share your experience. It is good to know that you found our room accommodations satisfactory enough for your needs. I apologize you found your stay less than satisfactory due to the heating system not working as expected. I appreciate you bringing this matter into our attention as this is our best resource of improving guest services.

Once again thank you for staying with us. While we understand your stay was not 100% satisfactory, we hope we would have the chance of hosting you again should your travels bring you back to Gwangju.

Sincerely,

Pam G.

No complaints about the hotel room. It was spacious enough, comfortable and clean. For the technically inclined, the room has wall mounted HDMI, VGA, composite audio and video input ports. The hotel lobby is sleek, the staff friendly and helpful, most spoke english well. Hotel is located directly opposite the convention centre. My only hesitation about this hotel is its distance from the "town" area. There is little else to do in the vicinity, no shopping or restaurants. It is more residential area with wide street, little traffic. Geumnamno where there are street markets and lots of eateries is about 8 subway stops away - quite a distance. It is a lovely hotel except for the fact that there is nothing beyond the convention centre.

Due to our daughter teaching middle school in Gwangju for the last three years, I've had the good fortune of staying in this hotel three times this year. This is not what we typically think of the Holiday Inn in the US. It's new, it's grand when you walk in, the rooms have the comforts of home including 110 voltage plugs, the staff truly seems to want your stay to be wonderful, and it has the most amazing breakfast buffet. It includes Asian choices, plus fresh fruit (where do they get such flavorful kiwi and pineapple in Gwangju?), omelets cooked to serve, bacon etc, and as many espressos as you can drink. This Seattle girl was very happy and looked forward to returning every time we had to leave. It's across from the convention center and about 2 blocks to the subway. But, taxi service is affordable and plentiful in Gwangju. The concierge will call one for you, smile, run open the doors for you, load you in your taxi and all the while ( per Korean custom) not expect a tip.
